View Full Version : Ran down an E46 323ci in my SER
1slowM3 09-29-2004, 01:46 PM I decided to drive my beater (91 SR20DE powered sentra SE-R with cai/header) to school this week cause i'm sick of piling miles on to the M3. On the way home i saw a red E46 323ci hauling ass through traffic behind me. He flies by me and there's an open spot on the highway so i get in his lane behind him. He's flooring it and you can see some exhaust crap shooting out of his muffler.
So i drop it into 4th and start pulling back on him till i nearly rear end him in the top of 4th. Then i shifted to 5th and blew past him, it was pretty entertaining cause when i first saw him he gave me a look like he thought he was the sh*t and kind of smirked at my 91 sentra with peeling red paint (looks like a total sh*tbox). His look dramatically changed to :eek: :confused when i passed his shiny new 323
What are the specs on the 323's, I assume this was an automatic and it was definetely stock. I guess the 323's are kind of the replacement for the 318 being the lowest E46 3 series? BTW my SE-R runs consistent 9 flat in the 1/8 @ around 75 mph and around mid 14's @ 96-97 mph in the 1/4 mile so it's no slouch.
You blew past him in 5th?? How fast were you going??
I have a stock 325ci steptronic and I am able to put up a good fight against my friend's 94 325 that dynoed at 184 or 187 whp (He has run consistent 14.9's in the 1/4 and I am sure it is capable of lower times than that). He pulls on me in 3rd and 4th but in no way does he blow me away.
Are 323ci's slower than 325ci's?? :confused
Either way, good kill. I like seeing people who act cool get put in their place.
Oh, my 240SX will be SR20DET (or CA18 or RB20...haven't made a decision yet. :dunno) powered soon. :D My Prelude just got JDM H22 swapped into it. I am still breaking in the clutch. Can't wait to hit VTEC. :D
Numanoid 09-29-2004, 03:52 PM VTEC :rolleyes
VTEC :rolleyes

S2000, Integra Type R and NSX. As well as the "garden variety" GS-R and Prelude.
'nuff said.
VTEC :rolleyes
:laugh Funny how my 2.2L 4 cyl can keep up, if not beat your 2 year old 2.5L 6 cyl....and my motor is over 10-12 years old. :laugh :D
carrrnuttt 09-29-2004, 11:37 PM I have a '92 SE-R as a beater too.

I love it. Shocks most people, as you can't really distinguish it from any other old Sentra, besides the foglights.
It has the same spirit that my 88 325 had (boxy, and nimble), but much, much quicker.

funny how v-tech, hondas performance engine keeps up with the base model 3 series. That's damn impressive. keep up with an e30 m3 that has the same amount of cylinders

Yeah mine looks just like yours except my paint is probably more beat up than yours. I don't have the SE-R sticker on mine anymore, the only way you can really tell is wheels/exhaust/fogs.
What is your timing advanced to? I put mine to 19 and it makes a HUGE difference, i also have an AEM cai/pacesetter header as well. Those 3 mods made my car pretty quick (probably about 140-150 whp), with a good launch i could probably skim a low 14. Either way you gotta love a sub 2400 pound car and with a GT30R it'd totally own my M3.

That's mostly cause the prelude is lighter than the 325 although the H22 does have some good potential. There are plenty of honda 4 cylinder vtec engines that have as much or more potential than the motor sitting in my E36 M3. For instance the RSX-S K20A2 motor's can easily make 200 whp with a few boltons and the S2000 motors can make about the same power as the S52 with boltons and those are both 2.0L 4 cylinders. I don't care how many people want to slam honda, they still have very good engineering when it comes to building efficient motors.
If you want to think of it another way japanese car companies are all pretty efficient at building high potential motors. For instance the 10+ year old SR20DET can make 450 whp on the STOCK bottom end, i don't even think the S50/2 can do that and they have 1.2 more L and 2 extra cylinders. I won't even get started about the Supra 2JZ etc.
Will ZCPM3 09-30-2004, 01:38 AM 323 has less hp then 325 but more torque
1slowM3 09-30-2004, 01:47 AM 323 has less hp then 325 but more torque
How does that make sense? The 2.3L motor makes more torque than the 2.5? I think I read somewhere that the E36 325 makes more torque than the 328 as well, guess I don't really understand that concept.
Will ZCPM3 09-30-2004, 01:51 AM 323's dont have a 2.3 they are 2.5
1slowM3 09-30-2004, 01:57 AM 323's dont have a 2.3 they are 2.5
What makes the difference between the 2 then? I thought
318=1.8L 4 cylinder
323=2.3L 6
325=2.5L 6
328=2.8L 6
330/95 M3=3.0L 6
96-99 M3=3.2L 6

Obvoiusly there cant be totally fair direct comparisons between engines as every engine is built with different principals, goals, and priorities in mind. Its safe to say that Honda, BMW, and Ferrari make the worlds best NA car engines.

omg.. :(
I see someone else posted the model/engine specs, thankfully. 2.3l, man that's almost like ripping the heart out of a 323 owner... ;)
I'd think that the reason any non-FI'ed 4 banger keeps up with most any 6 cylinder is all around weight, be serious.. BMW is no slouch when it comes to the thickness of their sheet metal, or their heavy internals.. Take a BMW 2.5l and all parts needed for a running engine and slap it in a civic (god have mercy on my soul for the suggestion), and you've got the fastest NA honda this side of a skyline.. (if it fits!?!)
M Roady 10-02-2004, 12:41 AM Nice kill! An auto dinan 325i (I think most NA stuff) will run mid tens at about 65 mph if I recall correctly. So you should really put the hurting on a stock 323 auto. Wouldn't shock me if it were a stick.
M Roady 10-02-2004, 12:47 AM What makes the difference between the 2 then? I thought

325=2.5L 6
328=2.8L 6
When they came out with the 2.8 the 325 seemed too close to 328 for marketing purposes. So they called the 2.5L car the 323 so people would get off the extra green for the 328. People buying the 323 were cool with it because they knew they were getting a "free" extra .2L.

Wow the marketing department runs the show at BMW, what a huge surprise :confused Thanks for clearing up the specs, i always just assumed 3=series and the last 2 digits=engine size. Also the auto 323 running a mid TEN 0-60 sounds ridiculous, i think a suburban could run a mid 10 0-60. I'd guess with a 1.8 60 foot launch the SER could do a mid to low 5 easily it really runs out of steam after the 1/8 mile though.
M Roady 10-02-2004, 02:25 AM Suburban :rofl
The conditions did suck that night, too hot. I was 0.3 seconds and a couple mph off of my best even though I've done a couple little performance upgrades. Man, can't wait to get in a run or two with temperatures in the 40's.
I think BMW now has its cars numbered correctly to correspond to the engine size.

How can you run mid 14s in 1/4 mile when you are doing 9 secs in 1/8 mile?
Your mods are on header & intake on a non turbo engine.
Check out this website on their times and mods. There are people with more than header and intake running 15s. Maybe they are just bad drivers...
