Recently, my 99 540 was all over the place on the highway. I thought it was an alignment issue, but after inspection, the mechanics shop said it was the bushings. I found a set on bavauto.com for $35/pair where the shop wanted $70/pair. The shop also said it would cost me 2.5hrs of labor at $75/hr which comes out to $257 total. The guys at bavauto said that what some people have done was goto an autoparts store where they have a hydrolic press and they'll put them on for cheap, he said it should be quick also. However, i called autozone and they said they didn't have a hydrolic press. Anyone know where i can get a good deal? and someone that will do it right?
thanks
Wow its cheaper to replace both control arms which comes with new bushings and ball joints and doing the labor yourself which isnt that hard vs buying new bushing in trying to take it out and put it back in which will be a nightmare. New arms for your car runs $130+ each.
Here is a write up on how to replace the bushings. Its for a M3 but it should be the same concept.
http://www.ohiomotorcycle.com/understeer/lcab.shtml
In terms of tools, go down to the local AutoZone and rent a ball joint separator (http://www.autozone.com/servlet/UiBroker?ForwardPage=/az/in_our_stores/loan_a_tool/steering_suspension/ball_joint_separator.jsp) fork, a gear puller (http://www.autozone.com/servlet/UiBroker?ForwardPage=/az/in_our_stores/loan_a_tool/pullers_universal/jaw_adjustable.jsp) to remove the control arms from the old bushings, and a harmonic balancer puller (http://www.autozone.com/servlet/UiBroker?ForwardPage=/az/in_our_stores/loan_a_tool/pullers_specialized/harmonic_balancer.jsp) to build the homemade tool referenced above.
Also try PM'ing user AtlantaM3. He does side work and charges cheaper hrly rates than what you posted. He worked on my car.
For future reference for parts try
www.bimmerparts.com
www.bimmerzone.com
www.pelicanparts.com
They tend to be cheaper than bavauto.com on most bigger ticket items and other parts.
