I am in the market to get a full body paint job(don't ask, long story). So the other day I went to the shop I used last time I needed body work. The guy writes up and estimate...$4700! That's more than my car is worth! Needless to say, I was not happy the rest of the day. So what should I be expecting for the price of a good paint job? I have some dings to get out, but I was expecting no more than $2500, is that reasonable? Basically I just want a paint job to tie me over for a couple more years till I go off to college. So let me know your opinions, thanks in advance!

You get what you pay for. $4700 for full body work, prep and paint's not out of the ballpark. If you're expecting $2500, don't expect it to last - unless they have no prep to do.

4700 sounds about right. Had a buddy get an 89 e30 repainted black and it was 4400. That was just about what the car was worth. I'll tell the thing look brandfriggan new.

Actually it's getting done next week. This guy has been doing painting for over 30 years. I've seen his work, it's top notch. All for $1900. I'll try and post pix of before and after

Acctually you could do macco if your willing to sand the car down completely and do all the taping off yourself. Of course, then you might as well do it yourself. lol

I did that... car came out pretty nice for $150. www.jspecmr2.streetracing.org/4runner_for_sale shows some before and after pics. That price of $150 was with paint and included a 2-yr warranty... lol. It still looks good to this day =)

The price comes from all the labor, not the paint or materials. $4700 for a complete job isn't THAT unreasonable, although I'm sure you could find cheaper if you don't want something show quality. If you attempt to sand it down yourself, be sure to consult any friends you may have that are familiar with body work. My friends helped me for a few beers and some pizza. It also depends on what the car is worth to you. I sanded my 4runner down with an electric rotary sander in some areas (lol, for wood decks and stuff...) because I didn't give a damn. It sure stripped the old crappy paint off though :buttrock
