Just wondering how to hook up the rev counter. On a 6 cylinder M3 do the coils fire individually or in banks?

View Full Version : Has anyone hooked an AIM MXL dash up? pstockley 09-17-2004, 04:42 PM Just wondering how to hook up the rev counter. On a 6 cylinder M3 do the coils fire individually or in banks? ettsn 09-17-2004, 05:05 PM I think Techno550's got one. I'm sure he'll be here shortly with some advice. -Paul techno550 09-17-2004, 11:47 PM I've got a MXL in my 325. For the RPM, I used the ECU's RPM output to the dash. Its devide by 3, since its wasted spark. You going to make a wheel for vehicle speed using the magnetic pickup, or just tap an ABS pulse sensor? Steve J. 09-17-2004, 11:51 PM Yea, you can probably use the ABS sensor, just count the teeth and type it in for the teeth numberon the unit. Are you using this during racing? Do you have GPS option, if so I would like to see someof the data please. I am figuring out our AIM sponsorship and have to decide what we want to request. Thanks, and goodluck! pstockley 09-18-2004, 10:25 AM Did you interface to the ECU RPM signal with the coil wire from the dash or using the RS232/CAN wires? Are you using a stock ecu or aftermarket? I plan on using their wheel speed sensor picking up from the ABS wheel. Current plans are to use the system for track days and racing in the future. When I ordered mine a few weeks ago the GPS option wasn't available yet. I do have the lateral G sensor for track mapping. Apparently the GPS option will be available as an add on. Steve J. 09-18-2004, 12:34 PM You can probably just Tap right into the RPM wire in the ECU. And the GPS option is available from what I know. Its been available since the product launched. However, I've done a bunch of stuff with aim, specifically with new product launches, I would not be surprised if they list it as an option and don't offer it yet lol. But atleast they take thier time to make the products high quality. techno550 09-18-2004, 03:06 PM the stock ECU has an RPM output that goes to the stock dash. you can tap that wire. I used the stock RPM input for the dash, not the RS232 interface. The lat accelerometer won't make an accurate track map. I'd recommend a 3 axis for good usable data. Best is to do the 3 axis AND the GPS. You can also use the ABS wheel speed sensors directly without the supplied wheel speed sensor. Steve J. 09-18-2004, 08:54 PM I wish you could wire in 2 more accelerometers on the M3xg system...we're deciding now on what setup to ask for from aim. MXL is too big pstockley 10-09-2004, 11:11 AM Techno550, where did you tap into the ABS sensor wires? Did you have to configure a custom sensor or just use this directly in place of the AIM speed sensor? Thx Steve J. 10-09-2004, 09:11 PM All you should have to do is configure the number of "teeth" on the ABS sensor, and as long as you have good wiring, no extra noise or anything, it should work fine. vodomagoo 10-10-2004, 03:28 PM if you get there targeted speed sensor just set it by the lugs on the hub it works great if you have studs. i belive if you use the abs sensor you cant use the abs system anymore, just something to consider if you still have it techno550 10-10-2004, 08:34 PM the ABS box is in the passenger footwell. You can tap the sensors and still have ABS work just fine. I don't remember the settings off hand (nubmer of pulses per revolution), but I can tell you tomorrow morning. I tapped the left front sensor. IIRC, AIM already has a sensor selection for an ABS sensor. Hope that helps vodomagoo 10-10-2004, 10:32 PM wow everyone i talked to told me other wise and that you cant run both abs and the speed sensor off of the one sensor good info |
