View Full Version : 05 West Coast Trip....feeler.
101cm<DELVAL> 09-17-2004, 10:27 AM Are there any east coast CR's that would have any intrest in going in on a transporter out west to drive laguna? Figure we would flyout to meet the cars and then fly back. 4 -5 guys might be enough.
Anyone out there ever do this and if so, what are the expences.
Yeah, I know it aint cheep.
Figure with 5 CR's the cost may not be to steep.
Gotta drive laguna. Been racing on it (GT3) for years now and can visualize the entire track when watching races on TV.........
Who *might* be intrested?
///M3Matt 09-17-2004, 12:06 PM Andrew, Im gonna talk to my dad about this. He had his car transported to texas last year by Korman and just flew out there and raced.
I WOULD LOVE TO DRIVE LAGUNA :alright
jdmorris 09-17-2004, 12:35 PM Laguna's a fun track, but Sears Point is both more technical and more fun, IMHO. If you're paying all the bucks to get the cars out here, you'd be crazy not to do both. They're about 2.5 hours apart, and Sears is only 45 minutes from the SFO airport. Both are centered around the SJC airport.
onrailsm3 09-17-2004, 12:46 PM Isn't there an event that's 5 days on 5 different tracks out west? I read something about it in Roundel? or European Car?
That would be the way to do it.

That's it! How about making the run out there for that event?
///M3Matt 09-17-2004, 01:07 PM Except Andrew's car and mine arent exactly street legal
qwickm3 09-17-2004, 01:09 PM I might be down for that. Get some numbers together on what it would cost for the transport.
Get the diff fixed yet?

However, you have to drive the car from track to track. Not exactly a series for racecars. Street tires required, too.
If I'm not mistaken, trailered cars are allowed. I've considered doing this too. There are different catagories or classes.

My bad - it's unlimited vs. touring class.
onrailsm3 09-17-2004, 01:26 PM Hang some plates on your race cars and get the ten day temporary inspection sticker so you can street the cars.
My car is set for something like that, just gotta get it out there.
Figure transporter leaves from Philly? That's kind of in the middle for everyone right?
qwickm3 09-17-2004, 01:35 PM I actually have a friend that has a big transporter. Its one of the open types but I know he would cut me a deal. The problem would be getting tires and spares, and tools there. Anyway it was a thought.
vodomagoo 09-17-2004, 01:35 PM id be down for the otc heh that would be a fun vac next summer, whats does the entry cost?
krisko 09-17-2004, 01:46 PM I actually have a friend that has a big transporter. Its one of the open types but I know he would cut me a deal. The problem would be getting tires and spares, and tools there. Anyway it was a thought.
There's gotta be a way, you can attach anything to anything with enough trailer straps and bungee cords. I could talk to the fellas at Performance Imports here in Atlanta. They have an enclosed hauler, could probably haul four of us out there.
Damion, Scott, Bryan, and myself is a good start for the Georgia area. We could have two regions representin' the east coast out in California. It would be great to some how get in back to back races or even check out this OTC thing.
qwickm3 09-17-2004, 02:11 PM I figure one of the west coast guys would loan us tools if we needed, you would have one set of wheels and tires on the car and ship another set out UPS a couple of days ahead to a fellow racer. it could work.

Ditto.. Sears Point > Laguna Seca

Hell, I could put everything I need inside the car, including a set of wheels. Can we run without a pass. seat in Prepared?
101cm<DELVAL> 09-17-2004, 03:37 PM Both would be fun. It all depends on when the races are scheduled out there. They would have to be back to back weekends. Man, the week in between would be fun as hell.
I'm thinking a 18 wheeler up and back - figure they can fit 4 or 6 cars in the back- stacked. Would send the cars to the track with all our stuff. Fly in like F1, pimp daddy's - race sears or laguna (laguna is my first chioce) and fly home in time for work Tuesday.
Start saving now cuz it aint gonna be cheep but it would be the trip of a lifetime.
So who's thinking they might have the cake to make this trip real?
I'll look into transportation costs. Travel, we can sort out later. Because I'm organizing this, I'll expect you all to chip in and pay for my 1st class ticket. I promise to roll you back a few beers during take off amd maybe a few party mix packets.
Let's make this happen. Lots of time to discuss. Who thinks they would be intrested?
East vs. West Challenge!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
jayhudson 09-17-2004, 04:16 PM I've been wanting to do the open track deal for a couple of years now. I don't have a race car but I try real hard.
A whole week of testosterone! I'm not sure I could stand it.
If you guys decide to do it, make sure you keep it posted up on the forums. I'd like very much to try for it.

Next year is way off, we'll see in the spring. I can do my whole summer driving schedule on what this trip could cost. But then again it's a once in a lifetime thing.
On that note, it's approx $1500 to ship a car to Europe :devillook Nurburgring anyone?
onrailsm3 09-17-2004, 04:42 PM Because I am a lunatic and can actually see this happening I called Intercity lines (General Discussion Sponsor) and here is what I found out.
Bear in mind this is all ballpark but about accurate.
6-7 cars can fit in the trailer, all picked up in one spot (I said Philly since it's close to alot of us), delivered to one spot is 7750 each way. He said 7 M3s can fit, it's the length that the killer so NO 740s on this one.
All cars will be in an enclosed trailer, and delivered to one spot (First track on the OTC?)
A week later they will be all picked up (Last Track?)
So for about $15,000 you get 7 cars to Cali and back.
So for about 2200 each we can be there!!! :alright
101cm<DELVAL> 09-17-2004, 05:19 PM Nice Work
So for about 3k, per person (including airfare/hotel/expences) @ 7 cars, we could drive a west coast track in our cars.
Not scared.
Just need to find 6 others who want to go.
(I'll bet this post dies here)

No I'm not, DEs only. But, there was mention of the Open Track Challenge. Anyone's eligible for that. So, if you go that way, I may be able to come out and play. I'm a poor working guy who's way past his earning prime. So, the expense would be tough. But, I'd love to do it.

Hell Boy, Aint we all?
Quit your old man whining and lay your plastic down.
Yeah - - - we will see where this one goes. Its a lot-o-cake and only time will tell. I say, "all you slack jawed hose wackers better put up or shut up - Drivin the same old track, year after year.... Hell this is like sneaking a hooker in the parking lot without the gulit of headding home and kissin' the Mrs's with the smell of strange everywhere....
Let's go boy's... who's got some sack?

F-ya all.....
krisko 09-18-2004, 12:00 AM Hmmmm, $2200 before flights and hotels and eats and beers.
I'd like to see what qwickm3 can work out with his buddy. Also, I have a contact or two I can dig up. It almost seems a better solution is to find a rental race car but then I don't know how that would work out for championship points. Plus I'd just feel dirty when I got back into my own race car. :D
I'm very interested however and could be convinced to pony up several thousand dollars and enormous hassle to drive some west coast tracks.
onrailsm3 09-18-2004, 09:41 AM To add insult to injury the 2003 entry fee was 2100 dollars for a two person team. I am sure it will cost at least that much in 05. So now it's a $5K week with transport, air and entry.
The 2003 entry fee is $2100. Inaugural Members are eligible for a discount, please contact the Organizers for info. All figures are in U.S. Dollars ($) and non-refundable:
31) A minimum of two teammates per entry is required. Additional drivers may be added for $500 each.
32) Fee payment satisfies all requirements for team entry, the ability to earn awards, and participation in the awards banquets applicable to OTC 2003.

Hey Andrew - I don't mean to start something here but if you're so willing to put your plastic down, why aren't you doing more races here on the east coast? I think you've only done one event in 2004 (Summit) and 1 event in 2002 (WGI) - why aren't you coming out for more races?
There's a great race at Watkins Glen coming up and another at NHIS - why not mix it up here first?!?! :D

I hear ya. Ya know, I ran the glen and blew the motor two years ago. Just got the car back and ran Summit. Got the Glen next week. Perhaps Mid Ohio after that. With all that's going on in my personal (home owner / pharmacutical software sales) life, I really have to pick and choose what races I want to do. I have been driving all these east coast tracks (with the exception of VIR) for nearly 6 years now. Sure, Mosport and VIR are two that I need to venture out too. Not challenging you there.
Just thought a west coast trip would be fun.
Sorry about the drunken post......lol
Are you going to the glen?
mijgilbert 09-19-2004, 07:01 PM Yup - definitely going to the glen. Glad to have some more folks coming - should be a great race!
I would suggest Mosport, VIR, Tremblant, Mid-Ohio, etc here on the east coast. Definitely a longer drive for you than the Glen or Lime Rock or Summit but dame what great tracks! Not sure if you've done NHIS either but it's a fun, challenging track although people don't rave about it as much as the Glen. I like it though. Hopefully now that your car is running you will get more races next year. I gotta get to Mid-O one of these days - hopefully next year! I've been trying to do at least one new track a year so that'll be it next year I hope.
Cheers!
Intercity Lines 10-13-2004, 12:18 PM Just an FYI Guys. If you're looking for a well run track event go to
SCDA1.com. These Folks put on a dozen or so events each year at Lime Rock, NHIS and the Glen. I've done several of their meets and give them a "two thumbs up"!
I'd love to haul your cars to Laguna Seca but thought you might want to know about SCDA.

B.Watts 10-13-2004, 12:38 PM First time I've seen this post...We might definitely have some interest, but hell, we could probably get 5-6 cars together from NC alone if we decided to make this happen. This conversation might be easier on the club racing list...too much DE and OTC discussion mixing up the question in the original post.
krisko 10-13-2004, 03:31 PM I'm all over the idea...I've got a few grand to throw away on a race in California. I was thinking about doing a skippy skool at laguna, this would probably be a slightly cheaper proposition.
B.Watts 10-13-2004, 03:41 PM I'd prefer to try to make it one of the race weekends with Grand-Am (assuming we have those out West too). Might as well rent a GAC ride and drive the club race if I'm going that far to race.
m3ltw98 10-13-2004, 04:01 PM Has anybody heard from Andrew. He was supposed to be at the Glen but never showed. Did he not get his car done in time or something more serious happen?
scottn2retro 10-14-2004, 03:11 AM If you guys are thinking about coming out, I think I heard that Steve Olsen was going to think about having the Club Challenge race in the Pacific Region next year (with the O'fest races on the East Coast). Do not know which track, but it would not surprised me if it was the big tracks at California Speedway or Vegas.
txse46m3 10-14-2004, 10:28 AM Hell, I could put everything I need inside the car, including a set of wheels. Can we run without a pass. seat in Prepared?
7. (c) Interior may be removed, except dash and door panels providing the car
“conforms to the spirit” of the BMW CCA Club Racing Program, i.e., it is
aesthetically pleasing.
There is a specific requirement in Stock for a passenger seat, but it seems that Prep allows removal. Of course this is probably up to your regional steward as well...so who the hell knows.

If we could do some deal where we can race two weekends in a row, I'd seriously consider towing it out there myself. It would have to be some great tracks though to make it worth the effort.
