View Full Version : Radiator question - changeout
rollie 09-16-2004, 11:52 AM Hi all, I believe it was Steve Mertz that was discussing the following topic w/ me at Mosport this past wknd prior to my demise....unfortunately - when he was sharing this w/ me, I had no idea I would require a rad this week!!
Anyhow, Steve was mentioning that, a cooling tip for track use - is to use the "triple core" Z3 rad (not dure if it's from an M-Z3 or not...) in the e36 M3 in place of the regular "dbl core" M3 rad. Can anyone please confirm this and whether OR not these are indeed the same physical dimensions??? I'm checking w/ my local dealer, who is trying to help - but not sure that I want to trust them...
Not meaning to sound like I'm doubting Steve, but if anyone by chance happens to have part numbers handy OR have already undertaken this mod, I'd appreciate some background.
Thanks very much!

mijgilbert 09-16-2004, 01:47 PM I heard it was the M-coupe rediator.
Steve's email is srmtz@ptd.net if you want to send him a note...
Since you're doing it you may want to look into a fluidyne aluminum rad but I just still use the stock one...

rollie 09-16-2004, 01:54 PM However, $689 usd vs. ~$200 usd for the M-Z3 tricore, is wee bit of a difference for something that I doubt works +3x better.....

....One more question, while I'm on that front end replacement track....I suppose it would NOT be legal in I-Prepared to utilize a fibreglass front bumper cover - or would it?? If it were the exact same dimensions??? :confused
It's just that I have one already (fibreglass unit) and an OEM unit from the stealer is +$550CAD
Thanks again Mike and all!

ceegeezM3 09-16-2004, 01:59 PM Zionsville's aluminum radiator is only $460... I've got one and was impressed with the factory fit and install. I think the factory 3-core unit is a lot more than $200... maybe closer to $350, it seems like.
Spencer 09-16-2004, 02:16 PM I've got an S54 M Coupe Radiator in my garage ready to go in.
Honestly, it doesn't look much different than the stock M3 unit but from what I heard, it does make a difference.
I paid approx. $290 shipped from Bimmerzone.
rollie 09-16-2004, 02:21 PM My price is good then for the same as what Spencer has at $290 CAD (~210 usd)

Dave
 Where did you find it so cheap? $290 shipped was the best price I could find anywhere.
Hell, thats barely more than a stock radiator.
rollie 09-16-2004, 02:27 PM I've got a friend that can buy from them direct up here in TO.... :)
mijgilbert 09-16-2004, 03:38 PM No fiberglass body panels are allowed in prepared. Must be OEM bumper cover. Can utilize non-LTW OEM splitter if desired.
Rules say - if it doesn't say you CAN do it then you CAN'T
Remember - depending on how much FASTER you are than me at the Glen, that's when I decide whether to test if you put the fiberglass HOOD back on the car!!!
hahahahahaha :)
rollie 09-16-2004, 03:49 PM But hey, is a bumper considered a "body panel"??? :az
On another note...
As for the Glen....first things first....I just found out that I may not be able to get a front left spindle for literally weeks....I might be toasted. Any ideas??? As we never had any 1995 M3's up here in Canada, I may have to try to find a used one in the US somewhere....
Help from anyone who may have a FRONT LEFT '95 M3 SPINDLE would be MUCHO appreciated

Part number? I may have one in my garage.
mijgilbert 09-16-2004, 03:53 PM Interestingly enough, it would be from the front clip I bought to repair my car when I wrecked last year....

rollie 09-16-2004, 03:58 PM If you have one Mike that would be awesome....Pls let me know....again front LEFT(drivers side)
Thanks!
Dave
mijgilbert 09-16-2004, 04:08 PM get me the PART # so I can confirm. Most people do not know what the SPINDLE is - they refer to several parts as the spindle. So let me know. But I do have a full left strut, hub, kingpin so the "spindle" is probably on there...
rollie 09-16-2004, 04:42 PM Spindle = King Pin
The piece that the hub mounts to. It then mounts to the bottom of the strut and also has the attachment points for the caliper.
Thanks,
Dave
m3ltw98 09-16-2004, 05:36 PM If Mike doesnt have one give Zionsville a call. They always have that type of stuff in stock. I bought a set for my bros DM car. Relatively cheap from them
