View Full Version : What's your favorite turn?
onrailsm3 09-16-2004, 09:49 AM Any turn, any track. What's your favorite turn or series of turns like an esses or a chicaine.
Personally, I liked turns 1-4 on Beaverun the best, followed closely by the Chute into the boot at Watkins Glen. The corkscrew at Laguna Seca seems great, but you can only get soo much from Playstation... :stickoutt
Those first few turns on Beaverun are all about finesse and dancing the car through the section. (See picture in Sig for an idea)
What' your Favorite?
ydubbs4 09-16-2004, 09:59 AM The uphill at LRP with the first three turns at Beaver a close second. There is just something about the uphill that feels soo good when you finally get it down. It definitely seperates the men from the boys. When it comes down to it, I barely even brake for the uphill anymore now that I am on R-Comps.

You know you get the uphill right when the ass gets light and you have to countersteer a little. Great turn!
Steve J. 09-16-2004, 10:08 AM I like the left=right before no-name straight.
mijgilbert 09-16-2004, 10:15 AM Turn 2 at Mosport
The esses flat out at VIR
The downhill no lift at Lime Rock
Turn 1/2/3 at Tremblant
Yee-haw!
///M3Matt 09-16-2004, 10:38 AM Turn 2 at Mosport
Turn 4 - 5A&B at Mosport
Oak Tree at VIR
BMMMW14 09-16-2004, 11:29 AM turn 10 at Road America 'kink' , going through flat out of the carousel, i need several changes of underwear per session!
dmwhite 09-16-2004, 11:36 AM hmm, probably the section of VIR full course between 5a and 11 (includes the snake/lower esses, uphill esses, and south bend)....damn, now that i think about it, i love that whole damn course :buttrock
ydubbs4 09-16-2004, 11:46 AM Turn 1/2/3 at Tremblant
Oh man, I forgot all about that, and I was just there last month. Nothing quite like not lifting through ANY of it, going over the rise and feeling your car move 1/2 car length out. That is definitely the place to make up some serious time on faster cars (I am still a DE hero, not racing...yet). Talk about needing some new trousers...
Will
qwickm3 09-16-2004, 11:48 AM I think I would have to say the downhill esses at Road Atlanta or the uphill esses at VIR. Turn 12 at Road Atlanta is fun too.
krisko 09-16-2004, 01:17 PM Another vote for the esses at RA, I also like T17 at Sebring.
vodomagoo 09-16-2004, 03:18 PM chute into the boot for me at the glen by far its the most fun ive had yet with 2-4 section at beaverrun comming in 2nd my most hated is the hairpin at pocono south oh how i hate that turn
sunir 09-16-2004, 03:56 PM T1, T2, & T4 at Mosport...
T4 (the chute) at Summit Point
NASCAR T3 at Lowes on the banking
laces of the boot at Watkins Glen
uphill esses at Watkins Glen
uphill esses & rollercoaster at VIR
T1,2,3 at Beaverun, T7 & T9 at Beaverun
and of course, 'Madness' at Mid Ohio (although I only got a few laps on it)
Drew K. 09-16-2004, 04:02 PM Going over the hill at Grattan in a 125cc shifter and getting air is pretty cool.... been there done that. Also at Grattan in a shifter (we run it clockwise) turn 3 (down the hill off camber left) is wicked cool.
the 7-8-9 complex at Mid Ohio is awesome (yeah, Madness definitely), very cool in an M3, even cooler with your ass an inch off the ground in a kart....
turn 1 at Putnam... balls to the wall baby....
gottagofast13 09-16-2004, 04:12 PM I can't just say madness at Mid-Ohio, 7-12 is freakin' awesome.
varsity 09-16-2004, 05:13 PM Another vote for the esses at RA, I also like T17 at Sebring.
I'm going for 17 at Sebring - there's no feeling like entering the turn hot, trail-braking through it, feeling the car slightly rotate, then clipping the inside apex and powering out toward the front straight - what a turn! Very cool stuff.
krisko 09-16-2004, 05:18 PM I'm going for 17 at Sebring -
I used to hate it but once you finally figure it out it's pretty fun. You can carry a lot of speed through all parts of that turn, but there's no camber to help out and it's choppy as hell.
ArcticFox 09-16-2004, 05:30 PM 2, 3, and 3a at Sears Point (Infineon) are my favorites right now...
Haven't been out of the state though....there are some nice looking tracks out east.
krisko 09-16-2004, 05:38 PM ....there are some nice looking tracks out east.
The opposite of what I keep saying...there are some nice looking tracks out west. If I could find someone to haul my car out west for a club race I'd do it in a heartbeat.
M3_boogie 09-16-2004, 05:48 PM You know you get the uphill right when the ass gets light and you have to countersteer a little. Great turn!
A true rookie here (1 DE under my belt), but I had this happen (granted only once) after the bowl (turn 6-8) at NHIS. <img src="http://www.dtmpower.net/forum/images/smilies/bubbrubb.gif">

That is like the exit on 2 and 3A at Sears...also, even more so, when running Thunderhill "backwards", coming out of 3 and into 2 there is a big crest and you get major drift to the right.....fun fun fun.
S.Lang 09-16-2004, 06:20 PM Turn 17 at Sebring is great, as is Turn 1.
The uphill is fun at Lime Rock.
The Corkscrew at Laguna is a good corner, but not challenging.
My favorite might be Turn 8/9 at Willow Springs. Fast and challenging.
MAB Badgerbimmer 09-16-2004, 06:35 PM Carrousel through the Kink at Road America.
Canada Corner (#12) up through and under the bridge is pretty good as well.
Geo31 09-16-2004, 06:41 PM The Corkscrew at Laguna is a good corner, but not challenging.
I've never driven it, but boy do I ever want to.
I saw it when I went to a Champ Car race there in 1990. Had an opportunity to lap a Jim Russell FF at the time for $500 for the day. I should have, but there was some poor communication from JR at the time. Boy was I kicking myself after seeing the corkscrew. Photos just do not do it justice.
einhander 09-16-2004, 07:10 PM Pflanzgarten...but I haven't driven there yet.
And the kink at Thunderhill because the first time I was on it I damn near wet myself.
krisko 09-16-2004, 07:13 PM Turn 17 at Sebring is great, as is Turn 1.
Turn 1 is harder than it looks. It's definitely the most dangerous turn on that track if you ask me.
Too many to list.
T6, Corkscrew, T9, and T10 at Laguna
T1 and T12 at Road Atlanta
T1 at Indy (GP track)
Esses at VIR
Uphill and final turn at Lime Rock
Everything at Cleveland but T1
The Bowl at Streets of Willow in a kart
traqrat 09-16-2004, 08:36 PM Sears Point: Turn 1,3,10
Laguna Seca: Turn 6, and Corkscrew
Thunderhill: Turn 8, and 9
Buttonwillow: Magic Mountain
trent 09-16-2004, 09:59 PM My favorite might be Turn 8/9 at Willow Springs. Fast and challenging.
I am going to have to agree.
sfzBimmer2 09-16-2004, 11:54 PM Esses at VIR
Turn 10 (coming off the back straight, full on) at CMP
Turns 1, 6-7 and 10 at Homestead-Miami
aweather 09-17-2004, 12:31 AM Turn 8 at willow springs is crazy. You have to have some serious kahoonas. We'll see how adventurous I feel this weekend on my bike...
4 wheel drifting over magic mountain is fun!
jdholder 09-17-2004, 12:37 AM Turn 8/9 Complex at Willow Springs. Love that track.
Also - the Karusel at the Nurburgring. Just because it's the Nurburgring. And they have good beer over there! Did I mention the beer?
I also like the Corkscrew at Laguna, but once you have your turn in points worked out, it's fun, but not hard.
onrails318 09-17-2004, 02:35 AM T8/9 at Gingerman - a sweeping right then crest a small hill and shoot back to the left. Great little track with lots of room!
Carosel at Road America - flat out all the way to Canada corner, yikes
101cm<DELVAL> 09-17-2004, 10:03 AM T3 The Bend & T4 The Chute @ Summit Point
Up Hill Esses flat out from T1 @ The Glen
Buss Stop flat out in 3rd Gear right down to the Boot @ The Glen
7-8-9 Madness at Mid Ohio
The up hill and down hill flat out @ Lime Rock
T4 & T5 Bridge Hampton RIP
The entrance and exit ramp / Exit #330 I-76 Philidelphia / flat out :)
I want to get out west next seson to Laguna and try that corkscrew.
ANY EAST COASTERS WANT TO go in on a transporter to next years Laguna Club Race?
I'm serious. Fly out and meet the cars....
S.Lang 09-17-2004, 11:10 AM Another good corner is Talladega at Buttonwillow, but only clockwise, without the bus stop. Fast, fast corner, with a fast left after, then a good 4-wheel drift over magic mountain, which is a cheesy man-made elevation change, but fun.
onrailsm3 09-17-2004, 11:12 AM chute into the boot for me at the glen by far its the most fun ive had yet with 2-4 section at beaverrun comming in 2nd my most hated is the hairpin at pocono south oh how i hate that turn
Pocono south hairpin requires a TON of trailbraking to get right, try that next time.
onrailsm3 09-17-2004, 11:18 AM T3 The Bend & T4 The Chute @ Summit Point
Up Hill Esses flat out from T1 @ The Glen
Buss Stop flat out in 3rd Gear right down to the Boot @ The Glen
7-8-9 Madness at Mid Ohio
The up hill and down hill flat out @ Lime Rock
T4 & T5 Bridge Hampton RIP

Don't tempt me... :devillook........um......OK, Maybe :D
1highbeam 09-17-2004, 01:10 PM For some reason I LOOOOOVE the keyhole at Mid-Ohio (when it has the right-left-right rather than straight through to the 180). I seemed to excel there at my last DE (ie where i caught the most people). Madness is a blast too.
vodomagoo 09-17-2004, 01:32 PM Pocono south hairpin requires a TON of trailbraking to get right, try that next time.
yeah thats what i finaly did, jimmy p was my instructer he had me on the brakes alot going threw there. that turn is there for one reason to piss you off imo lol
bgcabrio 09-17-2004, 05:47 PM I am surprised no one mentioned #6 and #7 at Road Atlanta. They remind me alot of #1 and #2 at Putnam. High speed entry, perfectly timed heal toe and out through a pretty tight right. I do get a little a uneasy at all the crash marks on the walls and skid marks out of RA turn 7.
While those are probably my favorites to drive, Turn 12 is growing on me. That is definitley my favorite to ride with someone who has bigger walnuts than me.
I am only really familiar with Willow Springs, & they are all good, but I really like cruising up T2. Just a little tap of the brakes at the entrance, & then floored almost the whole way around :alright :D .
SteveB 09-17-2004, 11:14 PM I have to vote for turns 11/12 and 1 at Road Atlanta, every turn at Sebring (does that count?) and the mini-corkscrew at Barber. I guess I should throw in T 5 at Road Atlanta even though most folks don't like that corner.
krisko 09-18-2004, 12:04 AM I guess I should throw in T 5 at Road Atlanta even though most folks don't like that corner.
I'm saving up T5 for the 'most unfavorite turns' thread.
That corner has bit me in the ass a few times, especially when I nail the top complex and am carrying extra speed out of there. T5 is easily my weakest corner at RA followed by T1 as I never seem to take the same line twice.
avusm3 09-18-2004, 12:34 AM Mosport - Turn 2, 4
Nürburgring - Fuchsröre (big radius but feels tight at 140mph :D )
The Glen - Turn 10
sleddog 09-18-2004, 11:00 PM The esses at The Glen are so much fun flat out-if you are foot to the floor after turn one, and don't lift until the braking zone before the bus stop, it may be the longest full throttle section on any track in US--the esses are so high speed that the lateral forces on you in the seat are areal trip-even with a race harness you feel you are being tossed out the window!!
also like LRP uphill :buttrock :buttrock :alright
AndrewBall 09-18-2004, 11:15 PM when the shenandoah opens ill get back to you. When i went around it the one time i saw so many that were awesome but i couldnt give you a number or name.
SlammedE30 09-19-2004, 03:11 AM The kink in the front straight @ Laguna. Absolutely wild in my father's 911 track car. Hard on the throttle in 5th and there is zero time to do anything but think about braking. Pops never took it flat out, but I got the balls a few times. The corkscrew is kind of anti-climactic, after the first couple times. It's good times down there, I look forward to doing it again,
-Ted
BMW M Power 09-19-2004, 04:12 AM Turns 2-7 at Willow Springs
here is a pic of me (silver) an my friend (dakar) coming down into turn 6
http://68.6.62.91:81/~photos/albums/album190/DSCN2178.sized.jpg
Corkscrew is only fun because it is the beginning of a fun series of corners 9-10.
My favorite?....exiting the bus stop and entering cotton corners at Buttonwillow running counterclockwise. Showed a Honda owner what BMW brakes were in that series of corners.
jimmyz2 09-19-2004, 01:52 PM Myfavorite is a U-turn from the cops. :stickoutt
