View Full Version : BMWCCA autoX 9/25
97Msedan 09-14-2004, 01:13 PM Is anybody going? I'm not a BMWCCA member yet and I see that they changed the autoXs to members only. They did say that you could go to one as a guest.
I just want to make sure that I don't get turned away. Also, how do you pre-register?
UDM Motorsport 09-14-2004, 01:33 PM http://www.lscbmwcca.org/autocross.html
I think u can only pre-register if you are a cca member.
I also think u can run once as a guest, and if u want to come back again, u'll have to be a member.
i think the registration are all done here...
http://www.dlbracing.com/default.aspx
Austin 09-14-2004, 03:24 PM You have to be a member to do the online registration. As a guest just show up early and sign up at the big white van. I believe its $25 online and $35 in person.
Yes you can run one time then join BMW CCA which ususally pays for the membership with the 10% discount if you buy one part at the dealer. Plus the magazine that you receive.
Have you autox before ?
97Msedan 09-14-2004, 03:43 PM Yep, I've been racing for about a little over a year in FL and I've been to 2 autoXs here in Dallas.
The first one was in my friends miata and second one was in a '04 chevy impala rental.
snk328is 09-16-2004, 04:33 PM I should be there.
97Msedan 09-16-2004, 05:36 PM Can't wait to see everybody out there. It looks like I'll be racing in the G. I'm sure it's pretty stiff competition b/c I've seen Jim Harris racing at SCCA and ER events.
Rahul325 09-16-2004, 05:59 PM i just found out that one of my tires has a cracked valve stem and discount tire doesnt have the gorilla valve stem thats on my wheel, looks like they are gonna order it and if it gets here before 24th, i will be at the autoX. worst case scenario, i will ask them to put a regular valve stem and put the gorilla valve stem when it comes in. so i shud be there... hopefully.....
Austin 09-17-2004, 01:31 AM gorilla valve stem ? I juse use metal stems.
97Msedan 09-17-2004, 11:50 AM Sorry to hear about the valve stem. What in the world is a Gorilla valve stem anyway? Well, hopefully I'll see you out there.
I just installed the new suspension so it'll definitely give me a chance to mess around with the damping, and possibly the sway bar settings.

I can't believe you missed ALL of the auto-x's this year!
I'm thinking of bringing the car out to the LSC White Rock Lake picnic this w/e...
The 325 is completely stock, except for the CAI I installed yesterday. :D
1slowM3 09-17-2004, 10:17 PM How far is mineral wells? 97Msedan i'm a lonestar chapter member of the bmwcca (my uncle paid for my membership when i bought the M as a present) I'd be glad to let you register as my guest if you need to. Anyone from Dallas wanna caravan out there? I've never done an auto-X in my M3 yet.

1slowM3,
Mineral Wells is about 30-40 minutes west of Ft. Worth. It's past Weatherford.
There used to be a caravan that met in front of the McDonald's at 635 and MacArthur around 7AM, although lately, I'm not sure that there have been a lot of people meeting there. It's also inconvenient if you live anywhere outside of Irving, because there are more direct ways to get out to Mineral Wells than to stop in Irving.

Thanks, but I ended up getting my membership earlier this week. You should definitely come out and try out autocrossing, it can be addictive.
97Msedan 09-18-2004, 10:47 PM Anybody want to caravan from the Mansfield/Arlington/Grand Prairie area?
1slowM3 09-19-2004, 01:04 AM Anybody want to caravan from the Mansfield/Arlington/Grand Prairie area?
I'd meet up with you on the way out there if that's how i get to mineral wells, i've never been there before and i'm coming from the lewisville area. I've never done an auto-x in my own car so what do you have to do as far as prep? I changed my oil/tranny fluid/coolant and put on an URI pulley today and have an Xbrace on the way.

You don't have to do anything. Just make sure that you're not leaking fluid from various places and that the general condition of the car is in good shape. Also make sure that your radiator neck is not beginning to form hairline cracks, if your car is getting anywhere near 100K miles.
CABimmer 09-19-2004, 03:46 PM Im in.
Thomas, G is the most competitive group out there. we have had 5 seperate 1st place finishes out of that group in 6 auto-xs. No other group has such tight competion.
There are two cars with Blowers, full race shocks, Hoosiers and other goodies.
I wish my new camber plates were here.

I just took my radiator out to flush it/fill it yesterday and it looked in good shape. My car has 72000 miles on it and it was wrecked at about 30 by a previous owner with the front bumper/radiator etc being replaced so it's not too old.
What class would a 97 M3 Sedan with benfer cai/uri crankpulley/xbrace for the only mods be in? I tried their number chart and it put me to around 55 points, i forget which class that's in. Also if you want to bring a friend that's a non BMWCCA member can u register them ahead to make sure they get to run after driving all the way out there?
CABimmer 09-19-2004, 07:34 PM We never turn anyone away. show up and you will be able to run. You dont need to be with a member to get in. Just show up with $35, and a smile.

Do the racers have to work the course at this event (picking up cones etc) I've been to a few auto-x's and some we did some we didn't. Not that i plan on ever hitting a cone or anything :stickoutt
CABimmer 09-19-2004, 07:45 PM You will need to work a morning and an afternoon session. You will get 4 runs each time. The nice thing is that we have long cources and you will see close 100mph. :devillook

You should be in good shape then!
55 points will *just* put you in class E.
Just bring your friend along. If it's his first time, he will pay $35 but if he signs up for a membership (which he will have to if he wants to come back), it will be $25 from thereonafter as long as he signs up online.
All drivers must work in order for their times to count (and if they plan on coming back and getting a friendly reception ;)). You run twice and work twice. You will learn alot from watching at corner stations, so it's in your best interests.

Sweet, hope it's not baking 100 degrees like it has been recently. Also if you can hit 100 mph isn't that more like a road course? Is it held in a stadium parking lot or something? I hope i don't get slaughtered in E class, stupid crank pulley and X brace....
CABimmer 09-19-2004, 07:59 PM Its at a old airport and its huge. The levels are all based on Mods, so if you can drive, you will be competitive.

I have a ton of questions is there a link to a FAQ section or anything? I've never participated in a BMWCCA sanctioned auto-X. Can you have a passenger in your car during the runs, is it free for friends to come out and just watch and do you need a DOT approved helmet, I registered for a permenent number since i'm in the BMWCCA does that determine when I get to take my runs?
CABimmer 09-19-2004, 08:09 PM You make your runs based on what class your in. In the morning they will tell you what run group your in. You are allowed passengers and they dont have to pay to get there. YOu need a Snell 95 or newer helmet. If not they have some loaners.

So a shoei motorcycle helmet would work then i guess (i don't know much about snell ratings etc) BTW CAbimmer are you in the G class?
CABimmer 09-19-2004, 08:42 PM Yep, in G and need more money.
That helmet should be fine.
stuntride 09-19-2004, 08:46 PM i wont be able to make it since my car isnt ready for the beating and i have to go house shopping with my brother, lets ee another TOD doug, but good luck to everyone
1slowM3 09-20-2004, 11:44 AM Anyone have some track wheels they wanna let me borrow for a day ;)
CABimmer 09-20-2004, 12:31 PM I will sell you mine with tires after the Nov. AUto-x
Rahul325 09-20-2004, 01:22 PM Doug,

No thanks, i have a set of LTW's on the way i just need a temporary solution for this weekend and wanted to see what R compound or something like a kumho MX would feel like.

I'm down for a ride, what's the difference between driving in the morning and driving in the afternoon for points? Do you try and go all out in the morning and slightly more conservative for points? I'd love to see how those victoracers compare to street tires, are they the V700s?
Austin 09-21-2004, 12:51 AM Saturday moring sucks since you are still wondering why you stayed out so late Friday night and wish the red bulls would hurry up and kick in.
Points are the same moring vs afternoon just the afternoon is quick since people improve thru out the day.

I'm sure i'll be sleeping by 11 pm on friday, what time do you have to show up for reg/tech on sat @ mineral wells. Also how far is it from the lewisville area, any of you guys plan on leaving from plano/carrollton/lewisville/irving to go there, i'd like to meet up with someone cause i've never been to mineral wells. I'll probalby be bringing a few friends that are too pansy to run their own cars
CABimmer 09-21-2004, 08:25 AM I will be driving throught I35 and 121 at about 6:30 youre welcome to fallow. My times are usually faster on the second session as I know the track better.
Tires, Just standard Victo's

1slowM3 09-22-2004, 12:16 AM I just officially registered and paid, noticed there's only me and an E30 in my class. I saw there's a Byzanz M3/4 signed up, I can't wait to see that in real person
CABimmer 09-22-2004, 10:31 AM I just added up my points and I have 91, even if they make a class H next year im screwed.
So anyone up for a meet and drive on the way out?

Geez 91 points without FI? You must have a ton of small mods I came up with 55 pts with intake/crank pulley/Xbrace on a M3/4. I'd be glad to meet up in lewisville to drive out there if you know the way. Is there an official address of this place or directions? I'm guessing it's on I20 on the way out to weatherford/abilene?
CABimmer 09-22-2004, 02:31 PM There is a map on the website. How about we meet at Bass Proshops at 6:30, that way others can join.
BlackE36M3 09-22-2004, 09:44 PM I really wanted to go to this event but I just reviewed our up coming events for next week and I am going to have to go in for a while on Saturday to make sure my employees are ok. I am thinking I will be working till around 1 or 2. What time will you guys be out there till?
CABimmer 09-22-2004, 10:00 PM should finish up around 4-5, it depends on how many people show up
1slowM3 09-23-2004, 12:45 AM There is a map on the website. How about we meet at Bass Proshops at 6:30, that way others can join.
Sounds good, that's a perfect spot for me and i know the grapevine mills area well. I'll most likely have another friend in a 318 meet to go watch and my gf/roomate/his twin in my car to go watch as well. I looked at yahoo maps and it looks like you just take I20 west like you're going to the crappy crappy town of abilene and then go north on 80 to get to mineral wells.
CABimmer, can you PM me your cell phone number so we can make sure we get in contact on sat. Or you can IM me on AIM @ jkan2001 and we can chat.
Do we need to bring anything else besides a helmet like tools/oil/jack/drinks/lawnchairs/large umbrella etc? If so will there be a safe place to put it while we're on the course?
CABimmer 09-23-2004, 08:51 AM Just PMed you with most of the details. Your stuff will be safe, just put it in a pile. I dont know of a theft in the history of the club.
Talk your friends into driving. They are going to have an long boring day if they are just going to watch.
97Msedan 09-23-2004, 01:55 PM It looks like we may have some rain on Sat. It should make things interesting.
Is anybody bringing a jack, the movers lost the handle for my small jack?
snk328is 09-23-2004, 02:23 PM I'll try to remember to bring mine, although I belive Doug has one of those lightweight aluminum racing jacks.

i wouldn't buy anything from HF that would involve any possibilites of me getting injured by it. with that said, go to sams or costco. they have a much much much better unit for 59 bucks
Rahul325 09-23-2004, 03:56 PM there is a harbor freight store in Irving, if u wanna get that and save on shipping costs.

That's my BIG jack, it's a little too heavy to lug around, but a great jack for the money. The other problem is that I can't get it under my car with the new suspension.
Thanks for the info guys.

You can always drive up onto one or two pieces of 2x4's
97Msedan 09-23-2004, 04:30 PM I've got some ramps, problem is the movers lost the little rubber stoppers that keep them in place when you're pulling up onto them so they just slide all over the place.
CABimmer 09-23-2004, 05:51 PM I will have my HF jack and it works just fine. I just got new MXs so bring on the rain. Ill run my street tires instead of the Victo's. By the way who got FTD last time it rained :devillook
1slowM3 09-24-2004, 02:01 PM I just checked weather.com and it's a 50% chance of rain in mineral wells, is this thing rain or shine? I'd be really nervous trying to go fast on wet pavement.
CABimmer 09-24-2004, 02:38 PM Rain or shine. There is nothing to run into, auto-x in the rain is really good for your driver skills

I did manage runner up to FTD. :mad

Yah I have it. Works great looks good and light. Also works on lowered cars.
1slowM3 09-26-2004, 04:00 PM I had a great time and there were plenty of nice people that rode/instructed me so i'll definetely be back next time. My morning sessions were terrible cause i just went all out with the throttle down the whole time spinning out a few times. Mark instructed me in the afternoon and i consistently lowered my times, it's amazing how little power it really takes to go fast if you drive smooth.
Thanks to CAbimmer for letting me follow him out there too, that place is hard to find!
Rahul325 09-27-2004, 12:31 PM well i tore my fender on saturday during the autoX, must have happened when i spun out. The Eibach springs were a little too soft and got compressed and left me with torn fender :bawl . time to get a rubber mallet and work on the fender. my tire got cut a bit, is it time to replace it ?
here are a few pics.

I'm not qualified to answer your question, to be honest. Just telling you what I would be doing if I were in your situation.
The fender basically gouged the entire circumference of the shoulder, so I would be really worried about the tread coming off when taking corners or making sudden stops.
Why don't you throw on the spare until you can get the tire changed?

Sweet! It's good to get the wife's consent! :D
The FTD went to Mark Y. with a time of 97.788, with Fernando at 99.020. Doug came in third at 99.806.
I ended up at 105.156. I was able to beat the Mini Cooper S by 0.042! That was a close one!
The next auto-x is at MW once again on October 24. That's a Sunday, btw, because the Street Survival for teenage drivers will be on October 23.
This is all assuming that the chapter goes through with the plan...

Don't trust the main calendar. Somebody is not doing a good job of keeping the content updated on the LSC site.
I'll ask on Yahoo groups anyway just to make sure.

Well well, what do you know...the 2 fastest cars of the day were cosmos M3/4 5sps :D Too bad mine wasn't one of them. Mark Y actually drove my fairly stock M3/4 to a 105 and my rear potenza RE750's were SHOT, i'm also on stock suspension. Gotta learn how to drive my car now
