View Full Version : Labor Day Speed Trap (avoided)
Reed Hunt 09-07-2004, 07:30 PM Traveling from home (east of Seattle) to Olympia - about 70 miles and mostly south on Interstate 5.
For those familiar with the location, we had just cleared Fort Lewis and were heading down the hill into the Nisqually river delta area when traffic slowed considerably. It seems there were two state patrol cars on EACH side of the freeway handing out tickets. I happened to look in my rear view mirror and, about 1/4 mile behind us (backed up on an on-ramp) were another 5 patrol cars waiting to pounce - that's 9 d*mn cars and represents the largest speed trap in my memory banks...
We were taking it easy, so no big deal. Later that day there was a fatality accident north of Seattle, also on I-5. A late-model corvette was driving erratically, got sideways, took out two other cars, and broke in half, killing both the driver and his passenger. At least one other person was hurt, and pretty badly.
Probably a good weekend to stay at home...

Good thing you were taking it easy. I travel that way fairly often, and it is a spot that the WSP likes to sit at and tag people as they come down the hill (especially alot of the soldiers on their way off the base)!. Glad to hear that you were safe though.
The highest number of Staters I have seen at one time was down on 205 before the bridge into Oregon. I swear that a few years ago, I was going down to the inlaws for Thanksgiving, and I counted 11 of them either in a row in the turn around median, or on the on ramp waiting for their buddy with the Lazer gun up on the overpass pegging people as they came around the corner. Luckily, I had the family with me in the Expedition - not the greatest vehicle to go tearing down the highway in. :nono
Oh well - at least for one day I was lucky.

Agreed. And it sound like we BOTH have in-laws in Oregon - Portland for me...
Yes, that area (south of Fort Lewis) is heavily patrolled. Interesting on the 205 cutoff, too. I usually go about 65 through there and always expect to see police. But, lucky me, I have seen very few through there for some reason...
Cheers,

immaculate 09-08-2004, 04:24 PM the highway patrol came out in full force here in southern california too over the weekend. i counted 10 cops (3 on bikes, 7 squad cars) on sunday alone. scariest part was that most of them didn't have radar on and were going along pacing people on the highway. i was hoping i'd get nailed by lidar somewhere to test out the new placement of my laser jammer but it didn't happen this weekend. maybe next =)
long weekends are definitely not the greatest of times to hit the road.

Nope, Memorial Day, 4th of July, and Labor Day are not good times to be speeding.
BTW Aaron, I did have my shop check my suspension (wiggle test) while the car was in the air last week. They reported very little play and probably another 30K miles on the current components...I drive the E38 pretty sedately, which probably explains this a bit...
hadboosttroy 09-10-2004, 02:39 AM The cops haven't been patrolling that area for a while now, which is nice, I drive it almost every day :cool

You mean the 205 cutoff, right? I agree. I haven't seen much of any activity there for a year or two, though I really only travel it 6-7 times per year...
