i know it's a long question, bear w/ me please

so i just got a new clarion dxz735mp HU. i got the wiring harness and adapter. so i matched all the wires up all color coordinated like, and i just twisted them together. coming out of the clarion there were 2 yellow wires, one marked 3a and the other 15a, so i just put them both to the one yellow wire coming from the wiring harness. after MUCH fiddling i finally got it to turn on, so i put the main head unit back into the slot in the center console, and something sparked and it turned off. i couldn't get it to turn back on again! then i tried to put my stock HU back in and it won't work either! so what happened did i blow a fuse? how do i fix that help please. what did i do wrong?

by the way i tried covering the exposed wires w/ electrical tape but that didn't make it turn on either. anyone have any ideas!!

thanks

Well, you caused a short by puting those 2 wires together. Look in the fuse box in the engine bay to see what fuse blew. Look in your owenrs manual for the HU so you know exactly what those 2 wires are for.

Twisting the wires together, while it can work, is not best way to finish off a wiring job. You might try getting some butt connectors that you can crimp ontthe wires to splice them together. These will give you a good solid connection and will also cover the wire ends so that they're not exposed.

It's also a good idea to have a fuse in the hot wires for the HU to give you an added level of protection.

This is ture. ANd if you just want to go and rig something then just get some electircal tape and tape them up.. NEVER HAVE wires open.. When that happes all kinds of bad things happen.. Trust me I KNOW! :rolleyes

The metal strip will be broken (melted) in the center.

shrink tubing and soldier.

wrapped and tape connections is not only ghetto, it's just trouble waiting to happen.

Why did you undertake this project with obviously no idea what you were doing? You should have gotten a friend to help you.

Also, it sounds like you didnt use a wiring diagram to connect the wires. Chances are just matching the colors wont do it.

If you want to make it easy on yourself get a wireing harness for your car from crutchfield, and then connect the wires.

clearly i did this because im a jackass! second of all i did use a wiring harness from best buy, but it wasn't too self explainitory. third i did use the wiring diagram but it just said stuff like blank blank power lead that made no sense to me. i called a friend who is going to help me hopefully tomorrow. thanks for all the info, i'll go to kragen to pick up some fuses. then i'll go to osh to pick up some connectors. then hopefully it'll work so i can listen to music again! :redspot

wish I had some free time this weekend, you could have brought the connector and hu over and I could have wired it up in 15 minutes.

good luck, you'll get it...
