Jumping from a Acura CL 2.2 to a 528 is a big jump. Kind of scared but happy as I have always wanted a 5 series. It has 94K on it. I paid 12900 for it. Good Deal?
Anyway, the noise from the engine seems to be very loud. It's an annoying hum sound at around 40mph and above. I am not sure if this is normal.
There is also another sound from the front end as if somethign is loose or i need bearings or something.
Any info would be great.

Did you have it inspected prior to purchase? If not, then I would ask around for a good reputable indy BMW shop and make an appointment to get it looked at ASAP. It's better to spend the money up front to know what you're getting into than later on when it's too late.
Good luck.

Congrats on the new purchase. I just got a 98 528i this year as well and am in the same process as you, trying to troubleshoot noises, etc. Does yours have the sports package?

Unfortunately it doesnt have the sport package. Well, as a first time BMW driver, I am wondering if this noise is part of the "Ultimate Driving Machine" thing. I mean when it gets to like 40-70 the engine is unusually loud. Or maybe im just not used to it since im jumping from a 4 banger to a BMW 6. I am also wonder if its just me. I figured its a sport lux car so it should be quieter than that. There is no wind noise.

For what it's worth, the 528i's engine should be very quiet and smooth, that's a big advantage of using an inline engine over a vee. As long as I'm not revving up through the gears, my 540i's engine doesn't make a peep on the highway, so I would assume the 528i would be even quieter.
Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean there's anything wrong. Are you sure you're hearing engine noise and not road or tire noise? I would imagine engine noise would mainly be related to how fast the engine is turning, so does it get loud at high revs even around town? If not, next time you're on the highway try putting the window down and listening specifically for the engine. It's very possible that the previous owner just had some very aggressive, noisy tires on the car and that's what you're hearing at higher speeds.
The fact that you describe it as a "hum" really makes me suspect you may be hearing tire noise. If you're that concerned, however, find a reputable mechanic or a dealership and have them take the car up on the highway and tell you if anything sounds amiss.

When the car hits 80 and above, you dont hear the noise anymore. But you hear it mostly when you gas the car to about 70 and then stop pressing the gas. My 2.2 acura cl made the same noise but on a lower scale.(i guess im comparing apple to orange here)
I am wondering if its the tires. it really needs 4. Also the tires that are on it are sports tires. I am wondering that that factor in. But I love the car. its very responsive and comfy. and its one solid car.
