View Full Version : What's the best claybar to use?
vroo//M 03-06-2002, 03:32 PM My local autoshop only carries Mother's and Meguiar's Quik Clay. I doubt any of these are good (Meguiar only give 3.5oz clay, and I haven't heard anything good on Mother's)
Any suggestion? I currently use Zaino products, I assume I can use the Z6 detailer as the lubricant for the clay.

BMLRacer 03-06-2002, 05:12 PM I've used both the Meguiars and the Mothers clay. Clay Magic is another brand that works really well. But, bang for buck, the Meguiars is the best.

At 3.5oz, it's a little small IMO, is that going to be enough for the whole car?

BMLRacer 03-06-2002, 06:40 PM No problems. You should be able to do 2-3 cars with that amount. Just keep it wet and kneed the clay from time to time. If you're getting clay streaks on the car, you're letting the area get too dry.

Wouldn't it be safer and more effective if you have a bigger claybar? I mean a bigger claybar will hold more contaminants, Is the little bar still okay to use after it trapped contaminants from one car? I don't feel too good kneading a used bar full of contaminants on a 2nd car. and oh - I have a cosmos black car, so every little scratch shows :( but it looked really good clean and shiny :D

BMLRacer 03-07-2002, 12:27 PM Grab the instructions from a Clay product. The first thing it will tell you is that you have to keep the clay wet and that you shold be constantly kneeding the clay. Keeping the clay wet will actually keep alot of the remaining junk from becoming imbedded in the clay. I know detailers that can clay a complete 7er with a quarte sized piece of clay. It's all in how you use the product, not how much you use.

SilverStreak 03-07-2002, 05:35 PM ... because I have only ever used one brand of clay for the car, the one I got from www.griotsgarage.com they even have a way/option to do it with an orbital buffer thingie...
98M3_4 03-10-2002, 04:25 AM I have cosmos black too and have used the Mother's bar with good results. Just take your time and all should be OK.
kitM3 03-17-2002, 03:15 PM The mothers or meguiars claybars are fine. Just spent half a day yesterday using the claybar on my friends c43. Took forever cause it is a white car. Cant wait till I do mine.
One claybar should be enuf to claybar a couple of cars, like everyone said, just kneed it so stuff doesnt get trapped.
IK632 03-28-2002, 02:00 PM I actually have the meguiars clay bar and I cut them in half. You can get 2 cars safely out of each half and depending on how dirty it is you can usually get a third or 4th car from each half. I have clayed as many as 8 cars from the 3.5 oz bar.
You can usually feel the big pieces that will cause the scratches in the paint. I just pick those out and kneed the bar some more. Then when the bar is used up you can use it on your windows with great results.
The important thing is to use plenty of quick detailer. I have actually gone through a full 16 oz doing a grand cherokee once. But usually you will use between 4 and 6 oz doing a regular car.
kitM3 03-30-2002, 04:51 AM I spay that quick detailer like there is no tomorrow.
Jeff P 04-02-2002, 01:06 AM Griot's offers the best from my experience. Check it out at www.griotsgarage.com. Their clay bar and Speed Shine combo are amazing! I had to use it last year to remove paint overspray from a house next door and it did an incredible job!
kitM3 04-06-2002, 06:32 AM Quick detailer is on sale at Kragen for $3.99
David 04-07-2002, 01:08 PM Mothers is average. 3M is excellent, and you get much more clay than the rest of the guys. Zaino is very good and so is pinnacle poly clay. Meguiars is the worst clay of them all.
I only use one bar for an entire car. When I clayed my car last october, I cut the bar into smaller pieces. I flattened out each piece as much as I could, and then I used both sides of the piece per section. Once the section was done, I threw out the piece. This is the best way to avoid getting scratches from claying. I would not advise anyone to use the same clay bar more than once. You're asking for trouble.
Just my opinion.
