It's been an interesting journey with the rebuild. I've taken the opportunity to remove a lot of stuff (a/c, cruise, fan delete, add oil cooler, oil pump nut wired up, etc.) so the car is undoubtedly better than before. Just as I'm getting ready to pick it up, it turns out my UUC tranny mounts and stock engine mounts are toast. Both tranny mounts were completely separated and one engine mount was separated with the other on the way. The guibo was all torn up, wouldn't have survived 10 minutes on the track with the mounts busted up. UUC is doing the right thing in replacing my tranny mounts for free even though I have no idea when they were bought.

The car should be ready tomorrow. My shop is doing some break in on their dyno, probably about 1.5 hours worth. How much more break in should I do in advance of my race next week. (for those not following the saga, had head machined and replaced 6 bent valves)

Interesting read, just forwarded it to my mechanic.

What is your next event? Driving school or race? I would try to take it easy for a day.

If all that was changed was valves and a head gasket...than you have no break-in to worry about.

Unless bearings, rings, or cams were changed I would simply have the mechanic run the car at a constant rpm (say 2500 while monitoring vitals) for like 10-15 minutes bringing everything up to temperature. Then run it hard on the street/highway (still streetable?) and change the oil/filter right after.

That's it...good to go.

My mechanic put in 10w30 Mobil mineral oil, I normally use 15w50 Mobil1. He said I definitely should not run sythetic for the first race and he advocates not using it at all. I change my oil after every third track event so would I be okay with good quality dino oil? And am I okay on 10w30 for one track weekend?

Since you're not breaking anything in...Synth or Dino makes no difference.

It's really a question of economics.

I run Mobil Delvac 15-40...a REALLY good dino oil designed for extreme use in turbo diesels/etc. I change it after every race weekend (or two single events). Stuff cost $6.00/gal.

I run Schaeffer's 15-40 when my sponsor "hands it over" as well! ;)

If you are gonna change all the time a QUALITY dino/blend is more than eough protection. Have a look at some of the oil tests sites and see the shear tests...pollutants tests...etc. on some of the extreme function dino oils (Schaeffer's, Delvac, etc.) and make an educated decision based on frequency of your changes/costs/etc.
