While I am not 100% sure, I wouldnt see why not. I have never been to a "school" before but with the scca solo2 events their were spectators

I have never done an autocross but I want to. Do I need to buy a helmet? If so can anyone point me to where I can find a deal?

I assume this is open parking lot - no walls right :-)

Yeah no walls. discovery parts sells helmets and they are in atlanta
discoveryparts.com
I think you can rent helmets their but dont hold me to it. If you want to track your car eventually go with a SA rated helmet if not MA is fine but I am pretty new to all of this as well. There is some good info in the track section.

Hopefully I will be there. I just need to check my schedule. What exactly goes on at an auto x school?

Karl, they run in one lot and people park their cars in a lot across the street. All you'll have to do to spectate is drive into the lot where everybody is parking and sign the waiver that says you know whats going on and they'll give you a wristband and you'll be able to watch away.

I'd definately be there but I'm still in CA. Oh well, BMWCCA autocross on the 15th will make up for it.

If its at turner field. Take 85N ... Fulton street exit. (next exit after 20) and make a left. If you don't see Turner field, I wouldn't try to autocross.. You can't miss it.

OK, thanks. So at once at Turner field it should be obvious.

Did you guys get DM over here? I'm English and used to live in Chorlton-cum-Hardy - never met an American who had heard of DM before.

Grew up on DM .. Nickolodean (sp?) used to show it all the time. But I have a thing for quirky british comedy.. Monty Python, Faulty Towers, etc..

Core blimey Penfold! DM on Yank Tv?!? Who would have though it.

Bit of Trivia for you: DM's voice was a guy called David Jason - he is now very famous in the UK for mainly TV comedy shows, not sure if you got any here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/comedy/profiles/david_jason.shtml

If you ever meet me I can burn you a DVD of all the Monty Python TV shows (DivX or XviD I think). Check out Dirty Sanchez or Ali G for late nineties / early noughties UK humor. The Office and Trigger Happy TV air on Comedy Central too I think. Oh 5th Gear now airs on Speed too, it is much better than the Car & Driver etc tripe.

I've already got all of the MP on DVD.. Like 25 discs or something.. Meaning of life, life of Brian, Holy Grail.. Etc.. Don't have Jabberwookie.. But I don't think I ever will. Also got most of Terry Gilliam films.. Read Eric Idle's book. Etc.. Etc..

so how was it guys :help Can anyone compare it to a BMWCCA school.

PKL ATL

It was OK. They were short on numbers so I filled an empty slot and drove.

Highlights were:
.Red mini nearly meeting a lamp post host head on
.Silver S2000 losing it on the first corner and heading straight for me
.Several spins on the salom, mainly minis

There was not much real teaching IMO. At least one instructor seemed to think we were all Michael Schumacher telling me that I was far too slow on my second lap [I was still learning the course and did not want to take a marshall out]. On my next lap I was only a second from *his* time. Patience with us newbies would have been nice. Some of the organizers reminded me of Eric Cartman but I'd go again.

Having non stock non SP shocks gave my 325i E46 comical lean on the corners - coilovers are being considered...

Sounds like they were really pushing people with a lot of spin outs etc.
wish i could have made it though :(

No idea what type of coilovers. Adjustable shocks + ride hight are the key so daily riding is still bearable. Guess I need to drive in a car with them first.

Also as soon as the E90 wagon is out I'll be ED-ing one so maybe it is best to wait until then, but that could be two years from now :95

yeah I am in the same boat myself. I wonder how overkill a GC coilover kit is for autox/street car bearability. I might go with like a h&r cupkit deal yada yada.

i had a great time...we got 5 auto-x's worth of runs in! i do agree that the instruction was a bit lackluster. i really liked my instructor, but i felt i received more instruction on how to drive this particular course and less instruction on how to handle my car. the seat time is just hard to beat though, and i feel like i learned a lot about my car, especially after i plowed though some cones at the finish during a spin :). i'd definitely do this again and can't wait for future auto-x's.

I had a pretty good time myself. My first instructor was so-so, but the one I took for a couple runs in the afternoon session actually gave me some real pointers (of course, pointers I had been given at the Road Atlanta DE in July - guess I'm a slow learner... :stickoutt ). I was a bit suprised that there were like 7000 Minis there - guess I expected more Jap crap.

I think that I'll probably mostly stick to DE's, I find them much more rewarding. I certainly prefer 3-6 20 minute sessions on track over 5-10 sub minute single laps.

oh, and shu, your spin near the finish line was most entertaining! :D
