I took delivery of my '03 M3 in May of last year. Since then I have had my fuel sending units replaced 6 times (the 6th time was today). Each time they have tested the units and confirmed that they are indeed broken.
The symptoms are an extremely inacurrate fuel reading from both the anolog gauge and the computer calculated DTE. Yesterday I filled up the car before dropping it off for service. I put in 13.8 gallons. Before filling it up the needle was closer to 1/2 tank than 1/4 and the DTE said I had 150 miles to go.
This has been an ongoing problem since I took delivery of the car. The dealership said that BMW was developing some new specially coated sending units. They were supposed to be done last month, but they still have not been built yet. Some folks on roadfly.com have brought up a good point that if they have to coat the sending unit it really isn't solving the problem.
I have never taken my car on a long roadtrip because I have absolutely no idea how far I can drive on the highway. The last thing I want to do is run out of gas (especially in the summer) in the middle of the desert.
Has anyone else had these symptoms, or had their sending units replaced so many times?
I am confident that this new set will also fail before the end of the weekend.
Thanks for listening,
