View Full Version : Dos and Donts: AA SC

I ran into some issues that i feel compelled to share with all who are interested in this kit:

1. Do NOT use the sc kit along with the Evosport underdrive pulleys. I always noticed that the AA company car's SC whined more than mine. I figured it was my louder exhaust system drowning out the noise. However, the reason for the difference soon became apparent - will be explained later. I took the car out last night and began pounding on it. It was running good until ... BAM. A sudden jerk occured. My battery light came on and the steering wheel became very stiff. I looked under the hood and found this:

The supercharger belt and the AC belt both slipped off. I noticed that the alternator pulley was now slightly bent and touching one of the idler pullies. I was stranded :help:

Nonetheless, an AA tech who lives near my house came out and provided "Roadside Assistance" (much better than BMW's) in my garage - i pushed the car home

Upon further inspection we discovered that the Alternator pulley had snapped in half and shredded the belt.

Our only option was to replace all three underdrive pullies with the Stock OEM ones. AA provided me with a new belt and did the installation at no cost - great customer service
---------------
Enough with the bad mishaps - here is the good stuff.
The SC in my car, with the stock UDP, now whines significantly more than before. Where it was faint and difficult to hear, it is now noticeably loud. In addition, the car now pulls stronger than before

I think that the b/c the Evosport UDP are larger in diameter (designed to slow down the WP, PS and ALT) they slowed down the SC pulley as well. By replacing them with the smaller, faster rotating OEM pullies, the SC pulley now rotates quicker and produces more boost.

----------------
At about 4:30 am Saturday morning, i decided to take out the car for some top end runs. The car was pulling insanely hard and i managed to top out the car at about 185mph. If i recall correctly, i was at about 6500-7000rpm at this speed in 6th gear. The car kept pulling without a problem. The reason i let off was b/c of this...

-------------
In summary:
1. Do not use UDP with this kit
2. Do not top out if you have an ACS roof Spoiler

I would like to thank Active Autowerke for their understanding and help with this situation - even though their kit was not the cause. Except for the roof spoiler : )

The old version of the EVOsport pulleys are even worse. their power steering pulley had some defect (which evosport would not replace for me) causing me to dremel off the lip keeping the belt from coming off. POS. ud pulleys suck in general.

sorry to hear about your troubles - i still cant believe your alternator did what it did. you must have A LOT of power

JMWeb: You are right, looking at your pictures it seemed that UD alternator pulley was touching AA SC tensioner. Eventually it snapped. It should of been making a hell of a lot noise though. Do you have any other pixs?

BMWg84: My guess on your situation is that you bought our pulleys used. First version required special small-headed power steering mount bolt, which was likely missing from the parts that you received. This is why PS pulley would not clear. If you have any questions reach me at vadim@evosport.com.

Unfortunately i do not have any other pics. But i will provide you with some more background info.
My AC belt has slipped off a total of about 5 times within the past 3 months or so (this is when i was still all motor). Months before this period, i began having random voltage drops. So i know that the alt pulley was becoming loose way b4 the SC install. I guess all the power just cut its life way short.

I purchased the pullies new from Redline BMW in Pompano, FL about 1.5 years ago.

I assume that it was 180MPH indicated on your speedometer and not actual speed. I doubt you have the power or the aerodynamics to actually do 180MPH. Where did you have such a long straight to go that fast? Hopefully not on the highway.

Yes it was 185 mph indicated on the speedo. I am aware that there exist a certain degree of error.
Yes it was on the highway very early in the morning. I endangered no one but myself.

Thanks, i hope you enjoyed the test ride :evil2

damn..im still on the dilemma on what to get. the AA S/C or the Delage kit??? both around the same price range. and both increase alot of HP. just dont know what would be better. hearing your engine scream at 8800RPM or the whining of the S/C and the look of the intercooler from the front.

I would not speculate if I were you. The tuners in Germany have brought the M3 WELL PAST 185...

This M3 has ONLY 404HP for example:
http://www.nowack-tuning.de/de/presse/m3-e46/bmwcar/test-n400-bmwcar.htm

Then there is the Hartge M3 that was just written up in Bimmer Magazine that tops out at 200 M.P.H.

Jerry has at least 440HP so....he does have the power and the aerodynamics.

"So i know that the alt pulley was becoming loose way b4 the SC install."

Sounds to me like alternator pulley was not torqued correctly during install.

if people that arent from florida and they want to order the S/C kit, do they have to ship their car to AA or can AA ship the kit to you?

If you placed an order now, you would probably receive your kit around the third week of August.

Hi, sorry to deviate from the topic. I've actually placed an order for the kit but will it fit on a right hand drive m3? I've brought it up but haven't got an answer yet. Thanks in advance.

Underdrive pulleys are NOT all made the same. Even though the manufacturers all claims they are the same, they are NOT. The diameter may be similiar, but the offset is always off by 1-3mm. That's 1-3mm from stock, not from each other. The UDP's could vary up to 4-6mm from each other.

I've had a problem trying to run UUC UDP's with the AA S/C. The VPD UDP are offset more than the other ones I've seen and clears the S/C bracket more.

My acc. belt looks much worse than yours. (http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showpost.php?p=2638167&postcount=2)
