Visiting from the Mid-Atlantic board...

I'm taking a road trip to Boston with my gilfriend in mid-August. What's a good place/neighborhood/district to stay in where we can walk to a bunch of stuff to check out?

I dont really know the answer to your question but i do know this - Abe & Louie's Steak House is the best restaurant in the world (if you dont mind spending some doe) so if you plan on eating next week make it there.

It depends on how much cash you want to spend.
If you stay in the city and want to crash at a sick hotel(pay $$$) check out copley which is right in the city.

There are a ton of nice hotels, just look around for the one that has rooms in your price range.

Places to go:
1) Newbury Street (really cool place *dead center of Boston*)
2) Fanuel Hall
3) The aquarium
4) Beacon Hill (Where the original "Cheers" bar is)
5) Cambridge - Porter square, Harvard Square.
6) Walk along the Charles river.
7) Back Bay.
8) Copley Square.
9) Downtown crossing if you want to shop right in the city.
10) The Common (park in the center of boston)

Just go into the city and walk around. Pick up a Boston Phoenix and see if there is anything going on in the city. There might be a free concert over the Charles, or something going on in the commons.

Have fun.

If you like Itailan food, you certainly should check out the "North End" - and while you're at it, get some kind of tour (even a Duck Tour if you're into that kind of thing) of the "Freedom Trail" to see the older sites in town.

oh, and see what you can do about catching a Redsox game. If you've never been to Fenway park, it is quite an experience.

Theres a Bar called the "Red Hat" its near the state house and Boston Common.
It can be a little wild I dont know what you and your g/f are into, but its the only place I know where you can get mixed drinks by the pitcher!

You can stay anywhere that has a T station within quick walking distance (the T is the Subway). Where you stay really depends on your budget. You can blow a LOT of dough staying downtown, or you could crash somewhere halfway reasonable that's a 15-minute train ride from downtown.

Definitely get a tour of some kind if you've never been. There are Fanueil Hall tours (walking tour of historical places in the old city), Duck Tours, Trolley Tours, etc. (Duck Tours fill up FAST though, so reserve in advance!)

And EVERYTHING worth seeing is near a T stop, so getting to stuff is pretty easy.
