View Full Version : 518i Engine swap................
fergie 07-08-2004, 02:08 PM Hi Guys,
This could be falling on deaf ears, because you US guys dont have the 518 model, but here goes!
Mines a '92 m40 version, engine is getting a little tired, and is it a simple job to swap it for the later m43 4cyl chain driven engine!
Ive been told that after '93, they changed over to the m43 anyway, but other people have said that the m40 carried through to the end of e34 production?
could do with some advise on this one, if anybody has an clue, please let me know.
Cheers fella's
Fergie
myred318i 07-08-2004, 02:44 PM Fergie, as the former owner of a 318i, I have nothing but sympathy for you. Even though I actually LIKED my 318, and thought that it was a much better car than most people give it credit for, I can't imagine having that motor in an E34
The engine that you're referring to was the M42 through the end of production of E34's. The M42 uses a timing chain instead of a belt, and in my opinion, they are rock-solid motors.
May I suggest the Downing Atlanta Supercharger. They have great reviews and are relatively cheap and easy to install. Probably THE best HP gain for money spent.
Check out the "Forced Induction" section, plenty of BFC'ers over there have experience with them.
Good Luck!
fergie 07-08-2004, 04:20 PM Hi Myred,
Yes i agree, the 518 isnt the fastest motor ever produced, but it pulls its own weight, and although take off leaves a lot to be desired, it will cruise at 85mph all day without complaint, and return a good 35mpg, bear in mind in the uk we pay about 89 pence (1.40 dollars) for a litre of gogo juice!!!
im not really looking to increase the output of the engine, just install a better version of the m40, i mean what kind of wally would put a timing belt on an engine with near zero valve to piston clearance!!!
but thanks for your sugggestion!
honestly, i would probably change it for a 525i, if i could find one in the same colour, but i havent seen one yet!
Fergie, uk :)
jimmyz2 07-08-2004, 05:45 PM If you were really fergie, couldn't you just buy a Rolls?I think fergie is a saucey wench! :)
fergie 07-09-2004, 03:26 PM yea, but roll's are boring, and british egineering aint what it used to be!!!!!!!!!

I totally agree w/ EVERYTHING said here, down to owning and liking the 318. :)
I just dont think fergie is looking for more power, tho the SC is a great addition and if you drive wisely, no fuel penalty... but then what's the purpose of the SC? :D
Persoanlly, evetho I've never done this, a light(er) flywheel w/ an M3 clutch would make a more meaningful and cheaper addition to that motor.
Men... M42 in the E34... and there I tot my M30 wasn't all that powerful. :devillook

Fergie,
i have a 518i- 1995- but built in 94-i need a repair manual-hard copy or on-line. the guys in the states have tried to help but when i access the 318i engine it looks nothing like mine. your right about the 518i not being sold in the states due to the price of gas over there.
its good to find someone who actually owns a 518i- i thought i was unique- seems like it is the forgotten model.

LJSE34 03-14-2005, 06:36 PM Wait, 93-96 (euro specs) E34 518i s have the M43 engine, not M42 (Don't really know too much about these engines, just read it). I'll bet you a nicely tweaked M43 518i could kick my lazy ass' M20's butt
yea, but roll's are boring, and british egineering aint what it used to be!!!!!!!!!
I beg you pardon good sir! I happen to like my old Yeller (http://209.190.76.63/Jaguar/images/done3.jpg).
All 12 are as good as new.
