View Full Version : Killed by Crotch Rocket

Heading over to a friends house late last night I was cruising down a nice 4 lane highway/road that splits in half...as the road breaks, I see that there is a nice crotch rocket already stopped at the light. I pull up in the adjacent lane and take a gander. I couldn't tell what type, other than it was burgandy in color, and that there were two people (guy and girl) aboard this particular rocketship. The lights signalling the other side of the intersection start to turn yellow and I start to pump the gas just a taste to see if he's gonna bite...he instantly matches my short blip of the throttle with a rev of his own. I turn to my girlfiend and sarcastically say "this is going to be interesting" :stickoutt

I start to rev a little more and wait for green. When the light turns, I slip the clutch and get a good holeshot, but no wheel spin..just a hard launch. Surprisingly, I had him through 1st gear! By the time I hit second however, the ass whoopin had begun. I'd say 6-8 cars by 110mph or so (my speed)...i'm sure it would have been worse had he not had someone hanging on the back!

At the next light I pulled behind and was met with an enthusiastic two thumbs up from both riders...not bad.

Not a real surprise that you had him out of the hole, as bikes are hard to launch, especially if you've got someone on your back. Newer 600+ cc bikes are good for 10 sec time slips. Good run, though.

Yeah, he probably took it a little easy off the line...then again if he hit it hard he could have performed a quick weight reduction mod. :stickoutt

Nice death, do you have any ideas on what kind of bike it was?

Out on Long Island. I live in NYC, but go out to the island on the weekends. No place to race in the city man!

Burgundy sportsbike? Did it look stock in color/paint/decals?

I'm guessing a Kawasaki ZX-11D. 176 MPH top speed, 10.26 in the 1/4 at about 130MPH. Did it look like this:

With a passenger, one has to take it real easy in 1st gear so as to not become a fly-swatter. After that, all the rules change.

BTW, 6-8 car lengths must mean at least 12-16 bike lengths.

lol.. i sorta have a story like that..

were driving home from ocean city on 495 near college park going 80mph, and im sleepin in the backseat and i hear a VROOMMMmm fly past the window..

i open my eyes immediatly and see a little tiny red light flyin thru traffic about a half mile away already!!!! that was just about 3secs.. the guy on the bike must of been doing atleast 170mph.

omg it was so sweet.. he was long gone after that

you should have swerved in front after 1st gear....would have been an interesting scene no?

That bike could have definitely been it. Makes sense then why he rolled on the throttle. :stickoutt

civics are the most fun to race with bikes...you can put an insane amount of carlengths on them

Bikes are tough to beat, good for you for having fun with it. I have a video of a hugely powered Viper racing Hayabusas. I'll post it so you all can see, pretty cool results.

Isn't 1st gear on a bike good for 60-70mph?

I've always joked with my friends, that 3rd-5th (6th on some) on bikes are for no reason other than gas mileage... :stickoutt

if you can ride and have a half decent bike you will able to beat 99.9% of the cars out there...people are always trying to race you if you are on a bike (and racing on a bike with a girl on teh back or anyone else is a bad idea) I remember racing a E46 M3 with my 02 R1 HAHAHAHA...there is no comparason...

Several new liter bikes break 100MPH in first gear. Like the ZX-10R.

I had a ZX-11D for 10 years and for the life of me I can't remember the top speed in 1st. I think 72MPH.

Yeah i never wound out first gear but my second gear goes well over 100 mph. With a redline of almost 16,000 those bikes just keep getting faster and faster as the rpm's rise. Not really fair to race cars. I embarrass my buddies Supra TT so easily.

I'd have to say though that the rider was not very smart to race with somebody on the back. I'm sure he had nothing to prove to you, just endangering whoever was on the back, pretty stupid i think.

It's nearly impossible to beat a bike in a drag race... They are definately the fastest things on the road.

the only place I will mess with ANY sportbike is in the canyons if I'm driving my turbo MR2. I can pull away from them if the turns are sharp enough :)

Absolutely @ the turns.

During my time with that ZX-11D, something interesting happened. Stoplights stop becoming fun. Unless it's with another literbike, you don't even get nervous. The fun is gone.

I ended up just staying a few feet ahead of the most powerful of cars, riding with just my right hand on the bars, sometimes I would pretend a yawn over my helmeted face...just to be a dick.

My BMW bike is much slower and launched really poorly compared to that Ninja. I would have a racing heartbeat if at a light with a 911 turbo or maybe a Z06...maybe. The fun has returned. A little.
