Alright well now that i know i'm building this ported box i know everything i need to know but theres one last thing to figure out and that is what i want to tune it to.....i know i want SQ but i want it to be able to get VERY loud. i was told to go with 30Hz but im not sure if that will get loud enough. the levels go like this 28-33 = high SQ, 34-42 = good SQ but can get REALLY loud, 42+ High SPL and crazy loud! (i'm not sure the exact numbers so dont quote me)
I guess i'm not sure what to do cause no ones really experimented with the Type-R's and im not sure how well they work in ported boxes. (i have dual 10in DVC 4ohm).

i think i have it narrowed down to either 34 or 35Hz, with 35 will i still have a decent amount of SQ and will it be able to get really loud like i want it?

Okay, now listen. You'll almost ALWAYS want to tune your sub box to 29hz. (give or take one or two, just ALWAYS keep that as your main reference) , so go ahead and do that. This is our magic number because it's just about as low as any musics' bassline is going to go, while giving us as much resonant freq. as possible.
As you can imagine, every vehicle has a resonant freq., or the hz at which the cars cabin amplifies the sound the most. Now in competition cars, they use meters to figure this then tune to that exact freq. Or some may just tune to between 38-45hz., which will give huge gains (average res. freq. is around there) , and not sacrifice too much deep bass.
The problem lies in that, when your bass tries to dip below this tuning freq., it's comparible to running it free-air, which is bad. Kind of the same as something trying to hold the cone still while at full volume.
The answer- most n00bs to car audio always say they want SQ so that's how they're building their box, but this is usually wrong. Go ahead and build it to the SPL specs instead, because the Type R's have good (not great ;) ) SQ and will sound nice anyway, and by tuning to 29hz, you won't lose any headroom in your music.
I hope this clears things up a little.

well i've decide to tune to 30Hz and then make a port plug for 34Hz and 44Hz just for kicks. :buttrock

u need to get an understanding of what loud is. When people tune super high, they do this for competition purposes and to get loud according to the mic. getting loud to the mic is different from getting loud to the ear.
after building ur ported box if it is not loud enough then ull just need to upgrade subwoofers, type R's are by no means SPL subs so i wouldnt try to push the hell out of em trying to make em do so.

yeah i just cleared that up lol......so SPL isnt loud to the ears? then what is? not being a smart ass i'm new to car audio and i'm interested.

spl is sound pressure level. a mic just measures the sound pressure level in decibals. this is what all these competitions are for and stuff, kinda stupid to me but whatever. what im trying to say is u can sit in a car that have less spl according to a mic than another car but the car with less decibals could be much louder to the ear than the other. if u go through with the adjustable port like ur saying, ull notice how shitty it will sound tuned to 44hz and so forth, and itll probly turn out that its not what u had in mind thinking the higher u tune the louder ull get.
hopefully that didnt confuse u anymore :stickoutt
