Who is up for lending a hand on Saturday for the engine/tranny install on Jeremy's car?

I'm only available from 9:30-12:00, but I bet we could get it in the car in that amount of time, and then maybe you guys can start bolting up cooling systems and exhaust and the like.

Anybody willing to lend a hand/wrench?

I'll be there with my gear wrenches, better watch out though, I might add some Nissan genes to the German pedigree or something

I should be able to assist for most of the morning and early afternoon. Hopefully some good progress can be made in spite of me being there :)

Greg, you really need to try not to post on here so much. :D

Thanks, glad you can make it and that you're bringing the gear wrenches. :D Do you have unusually tall jack stands by any chance? We probably need to get it up in the air pretty good.

I'll be there! :D

I did get some work done last night...

pulled off the water manifold and t-stat housing (only snapped one bolt!) and got the gasket surfaces cleaned, bolted up the water pump (gaskets for the above are waiting at BMW-L for the grand sum of $2.50), so I just need to throw the gaskets on and bolt them together...

I looked at the clutch fans a little more, and am "thinking" on it... not sure what I will end up doing, but I should know by tomorrow.

got he last front-end bracket bolted up. (plate with hole for engine hoist)

spent some time cleaning the intake around the injectors... need to finish this up tonight and re-assemble the intake...

looks like the exhaust is going back on, which makes me angry, but its just life... its going to be $100 and I just don't have it right now.

I need to get the pilot bearing in, and then get the clutch assembled and the transmission bolted up. then we need justin to hold the car up over his head so we can just pu everything in from underneath! :D:D:D

also need to get the motor-mounts into the car, but that will take all of 5 minutes or less.

(this is intended to be a working list, so add to it as you see fit and I'll print it at the end of the day...)

can you guys think of any tools we might need to borrow from BMW-L???

what else needs to be done from a "prep" standpoint???

oh, and greg, bring the MAP GAS!!!! :D:D:D

Dark Helmet

and FYI, I HAVE NO FOOD... so if we want to break for lunch or something, let me know what we need.

I'm going to call adam and Indi too...

Armen, is it prudent to bolt-up half of the guibo while its off the car??? of will that not work?? it SHOULD work, but I didn't really have a good angle to look at it before when we were under there...

also, armen, gonna need the torque wrench, your 1/2" drive metrics and the mother of all 3/8" extensions...

anywho, again, this is a working list.

oh, and the compressor was running great last night... :p

...and at the current rate of posting, armen will eclipse the magical 1000 mark before greg even reaches FIVE!!!! :D:D:D:D

...post-whore anyone??

Cardboard or plywood protective cover for the condensor - wish I'd thought of that before!

Fin straightener (small screwdriver?) for condensor

Tall jack stands and chunk of 4X4 for the jack

Tool to borrow: Clutch alignment tool

J, I have a brand-new best-brand (laso) M30 water pump in my garage. Let's use it. Then you can use the newish fan clutch and all the 5er parts.

Guibo... don't think it matters much. Not that hard to do it in place.

So let me know what else you want. I will bring my torque wrench, gear wrenches, I have many sizes of 1/2" drive deep impact sockets, long 1/2" extension, but unfortuantely no vertically gifted jack stands (just the average variety). I will bring MAPP gas as well. Let me know what my list is.

AND GREG GETS FIVE!!!!!

I gotta run guys, be back in an hour...

Mr Project

Wow, and he even updated his profile already... I never did get to that...of course I never really got to drive the W124 anyway...

And yes, I do post-ho around here a bit (case in point), but outside of this forum, I think my S/N ratio is pretty good. :D

I don't think we will need the impact stuff unless we get to having fun with the suspension... but it never hurts to have them, eh?

re: chunk of 4x4... I don't have one!

I think we are getting close though... hmmmm.

I'm still wanting to go shoot something tonight.. if anyone is interested...

re:re: chunk of 4x4... do we really need it??? the jack has a pad on it...???

although you might bring your small jack armen, can't hurt!

I assume you consulted you ETK, (I got the install instructions btw...) and it LOOKS like the E34 & E28 pumps are the same....

Mr Project
06-24-2004, 07:45 PM
I have not consulted the ETK, but I'm 95% sure it's the same pump/pulley mount.

Chunk of 4X4, I'll bring it, it's for extra height for the jack.

Update from last night?

Dark Helmet
06-25-2004, 12:27 PM
intake manifold is on, water pump is ON and torqued, water manifold is ON and torqued, t-body is on with a new gasket, and all of the brackets are on... I am having a hard time identifying anything else that needs to be done before tomorrow... all the sensors have been swapped over, all the brackets, the flywheel (I will try to get teh clutch done tonight), I hesitate to attach anything else to the top of the engine before we have the harness all plugged in...

we did manage to break armen's tranny-drain-plug tool though... which just further re-inforces my theory on the tranny fluid being either original or REALLY OLD...

and I will be going to BMW-L this afternoon to secure the remaining gaskets and hopefully borrom "the tool" from them as well (going to invite Ben to "lend a hand" while I'm out there... yeah, that would suck, the #1CSI tech in the midwest working on my car for free... noice.

anyway, you guys like gregs new SN???

Hah! Did he change that or have you been abusing your mod powers again? :)

Oh, and try to borrow a clutch alignment tool if you can, too.

per his request... and I have a 2pm here in the office (20-30mins tops) after which I will be headed to BMW & to run a few errands downtown...

I like it! Thanks for having that done J.

Guess what, new mystery noise from the rear of the 240! Yes, I'm so excited!

I am sure it has something to do with the wheel bearing install. Really kind of weird, so I think I am going to have a late night of trying to fix that, which may make me a little late in the morning, but hopefully not too.

when coasting, it makes a small "clunk" sort of noise with every rotation of the rear drivers wheel. Under load, any load at all, braking or acceleration, it goes away. I will lift it up tonight and see if some of the suspension fasteners need re-torqued or anything.

Funny thing, it just started doing this this morning, I drove it for a couple of days after the wheel bearing replacement, and there were no mystery noises, now, after sitting motionless in the garage for 3 days, it starts making strange noises.

That thing had better be careful; it is going to lose it's garage space to the se-r :)

Something might have worked loose. Check all your bolts / ball joints, including your lugs.

Non-Bimmer Greg
06-25-2004, 05:16 PM
yeah, I suspect the lugs, I have had problems with these working loose before, that will be the first thing I look at tonight, but you know, things are never that easy :)

Dark Helmet
06-25-2004, 06:23 PM
note: that last gasket... doesn't exist... use RTV.

note: Ben Kerwood rules, he's like "::yanks open drawer:: what do you need dude???" :buttrock:

he won't be joining us in the fun, but he did give me his clutch-alignment thingie... and he also has a 17MM ALLEN WRENCH!!! THAT I can use to do the tranny fluid sometime...

Non-Bimmer Greg
06-25-2004, 09:21 PM
Well, it was the lugs, but like I said, things are never that easy.

You know I have those stupid lugs that require some special tool (big allen wrench style thing) to tighten, well gues what, it is with all of my other tools, and guess where they are at, Jeremy's house.

So, I improvised a fix, I took a bolt that had the correct size head (12 mm) and put some nuts on it, and used that to torque the lugs down (basically what Armen did to get the tranny drain plug out), what a pain. I will need to check them with the torque wrench when I get over to you place in the morning Jeremy.

Dark Helmet

you'll probably make more than me this month... good news dude, the quibo is a cakewalk as long as you don't drop the exhaust on your nuts... right armen??? :D:D:D

Mr Project

No comment. (he's right)

Update... the motor and tranny are IN!!!!!!!!!!! :D :D :D :thumbup :buttrock

Doesn't look like you guys did anything after I left, though...you pansies afraid to get wet? :)

Dark Helmet
06-27-2004, 01:43 AM
actually, we did get teh tranny bolted up, and we tightened down the motor mounts, and about the time we finished buttoning things up to keep the water out... it quit.

so greg went home to tend his yard, and my dad and I went and killed inanimate objects...
