View Full Version : Things to do to reduce understeer?
jkuper 06-23-2004, 06:58 PM More air in front? Less dampening in the back? I am totally lost here! Running PSS9s, stock Pilots Sports (225/255). Did a school today with the Garfields and the car pushed like hell! Not as much as when Brian drove it, but still...how do I dial this out?

1) slow down more? :stickoutt
2) Higher front tire pressure
3) Lower Rear Tire Pressure
4) Wider front tires (I assume you have stock sizes? If you bump the width of the front, your M3 will handle totally different. Contact me if you want tires cheap locally)
5) More negative camber up front
6) Soften up front springs
7) Stiffen up rear springs
8) Soften front swaybar (if adjustable)
9) Stiffen rear swaybar (if adjustable)

1. Yeah, that might work :)
2,3. Doing this already
4. Might be an option, but donno if it makes sense to replace fronts only, and that we are back to R-comps/no R-comps dilema
5. Maxed out to -1.5 unless I get CPs. And that again goes back to setup costs since I will likely switch to a better suspension all together.
6,7 Can't really change the springs, did you mean soften shocks?
8,9 stock sways, so no adjustments there.

LOL. If youve already done most of those things above, I would definitely recommend trying to slow down just a tad more before turn-in and perhaps modify your line so you dont have to make as sharp of a turn.
What did Garfield say about it?
Mad Dog 20/20 06-23-2004, 07:22 PM Yeah, go with 255's (or larger) all around, front spacers and front shims for more track and more neg camber.
I don't know what kinda car you are used to, but I hear the e46 M3 requires a different style than an e36: SLOW in, and then put the power down "early".

We pumped more air in the rears, making them almost same as front, but we didn't really get into suspension setup. Fatih did suggest putting less shock in the front, and I think that felt better. I had it set at 4 front, 2 rear, 1 being the stiffest. I should mention that it felt like crap on the way home. Very unstable rear.

The most popular setup for E46 M3 is 265/35/18 all around with a 10mm spacer in the rear. But that is track-oriented, the spacer that is

Seriously, this is a driver issue. You should learn how to make the car drive well before modifying it further.

My car does not understeer, seriously. Even with 275's on the rear and 245 fronts, it tends to oversteer if anything. Ask John V, Glenn, etc ... next time, want to swap cars for a run or so, or during fun runs? I DO have sway bars though, front soft, rear stiff.
I also run a little toe in on the front with the negative camber, it turns on a dime. If you sell your PSS9's -- I would be interested in them!
