View Full Version : Blue M3 pulled over on 495 this morning?

On my way to work, I saw a blue M3 (I'm pretty sure it was an M3) with license plate "RATED M" sitting on the shoulder of the inner loop of 495 near Gallows Road, right in front of a police cruiser with the flashing colored lights. Didn't look like a "typical" traffic stop because there was nobody sitting in the M3. Just wondering if it was somebody here...

I was thinking about taking some pictures so you all would have more material for the ownage comments, but.. oh well, next time I suppose (and there will be a next time, trust me.)
It's not that bad, my dad was out of town, I just got hired in Tysons, and I was able to get a restricted license a while ago, I was going to work that day so I could get my schedule to hand in at court to get my temp license, then again I should have known there'd be a state trooper WAITING IN BUMPER TO BUMPER TRAFFIC to own people and make traffic even WORSE. Yep, so he gave me a court summons for driving on a suspended. It shouldn't be that bad, my first ticket ever (the reason I got my license suspended) was extremily harsh, the cop knew that (why he didn't arrest me or impound the car) and the judge will too. The fact is that I was driving within the limits of a restricted license that I was able to get at the time I got pulled over (going to work.) Yes, I'm getting a lawyer, but the judge will understand that.
12 points etc is not going to happen, or whatever the google whore said who posted the va traffic laws. Having taken criminal justice, those are just the confines of what a sentence can be - in this case I wasn't pulled over for a moving violation, was going to work, and was able to get a temp license. BTW "no greater than 12 months in jail" is true for ANY misdemeanor, a felony charge carries a 12+ month jail possibility depending on conviction. I had 5 positive points when I got my first ticket and license suspended (max a driver can have in VA for good points.) Even after the highest conviction point value of 6, I have -1 point now.
I've had shitty luck with this car from the start so it's probably going to be sold anyways - I'll wait to see what happens in court but I don't see a way around it.

And pete, not sure what you meant about Daddy paying for it but whatever, I bust my ass for this car - that's why I just picked up this job plus events production at GMU.

edit: Was one of the people who saw me in a black E36 M3? I saw you even in the middle of all this drama. :buttrock

E36DJ
06-25-2004, 01:49 AM
I plan to part it out when I sell it, unless someone is realistic with the mods that I've put into it which won't happen.
Having 5 positive points before my first conviction, I can say that I'm a good and smart driver, running into a white undercover dodge intrepid on an empty road.. who tailgates me, yeah that's bad luck, don't think it's really my fault but I dealt with it and was content, same deal with this thing.. I needed to secure this job, it was very important. That state trooper could have picked any on-ramp entrance to be waiting at, at any time.. he happened to pick little river turnpike onto 495 north in the middle of bumper to bumper traffic. :(

Hey Guinness (sorry for the OT)...did you just get that M3 from the CPO lot in crystal city?

I've walked past there so many times to go to Pentagon Row. The car was there for a while. I've closely examined that roof spoiler on my way back from the bars (at the protest of my GF). I kept meaning to stop by during biz hrs and see if they'd sell the roof spoiler on the cheap, but never got around to it. Glad to see it went to a good home.

Does it have any engine mods?

Ok here's what happened, I was totally relaxed, just cruising to work.. I took the ramp from little river turnpike to 495N, I get down the ramp and notice there's a state trooper with his lights already on sitting on the side of 495 at the end of the merge area (couldn't figure that one out.) He was positioned kinda weird, the solid white line brought me almost all the way up to his car, I thought about jumping the white line (everyone does) but I knew he was watching all that shit. SO I played it cool, went past him, and he starts to roll with me, I figured he wanted to get over so I stopped to let him in. After a second he was like "GO!" and gestured me to go forward.. I was like fuck.. I went, he got right behind me and pulled me over instantly.

He pulled me over for tint, AND his little tint-o-meter was seriously messed up. I've got 20 all around and it said 8, whatever.. I was in his car (in the front, it was weird..) talking to him for a while, he wasn't too gay (for a cop) but none of it needed to happen in the first place, and DAMN why is he pulling people over in rush hour?

I'm not sure what I'll do with Dado's suspension, I could keep it and wait for it to tripple in value over the years. You know he signed all 4 konis right? :stickoutt

edit: Insurance and registration is under my dad's name, he'd have to run my SSN first before it shows that I was suspended, but the thing is that he never SAW my plates.

Here's a tip for you. if you keep doing dumb things, you're going to keep getting in trouble. And the consequences escalate. I've done plenty of dumb things in my life, and continue to do so, though I do my best to learn from others mistakes and not make the same ones twice. But, understand that the people on this forum are giving you the type of healthy criticism you'd get from a family member, and that they have been trying to help so far.

Everyone on this forum enjoys driving and appreciates fast and well tuned cars. The downside is that nearly all of us drive cars that are impossible to wring out on the street. That's why most of us are addicted to autocross (*poor*) or track days (*rich*).

As for dark tint(which I don't have) and big wings (which I have, unfortunately), they're going to get you noticed. Cops love seeing someone with no front plate or dark tint because they know there's a good chance they'll discover something else when they pull the guy over. It's not fair, but it's the way it is. If your tint is indeed illegal, that's like a seatbelt violation, they know they have a guaranteed ticket on their hands and are looking for more (like drugs, etc.). Being on a suspended license makes it even worse. In our era where police officers are being reprimanded for "profiling" etc., handing them a tint ticket or a seatbelt violation is the open door they're looking for.

Just understand that the rules on the books are a possible outcome and that a Judge may not look on a police officer's actions the same way you do. And come out to an autocross or do a track day :)

"MANY others have" Um what's that supposed to mean.

And you are absolutely correct, state troopers SHOULD be on the side of the highways in bumper to bumper 10mph traffic to make things "better" after all if he had let me go, there's no telling HOW many people I would have killed/injured.

That's the only part of the event I was a little ticked off about, I have no issues with the legality of my car, I did it knowing what the tint laws were, I just think the conditions in which a cop pulled me over/brought up my tint for the first time EVER happen to be a little questionable.

What's your plate number? I can go to the MVA and give them like $10 and get all of your personal info like address, name, etc. So why would a cop need to have probable cause?

You ticket-magnets should hire me to drive you around. I never get in trouble. :stickoutt No front plate and illegal tint got me pulled over a couple times in my Integra, but I only ever got warnings. No front plate on the BMW and no trouble yet...

Let's see... the last few days... yesterday, on my way to the autox, 495 in virginia... i'm going about 5 mph over the fastest traffic (which means I'm at 80-85 mph) and I swing a tight lane change. Look in the rearview mirror and an Impala just coming onto the highway turns on his lights and drops the hammer. I slow down, merge over 3 lanes and disappear in traffic. Impala flys by and gets confused. Two nights ago... driving 60 in a 45 in a cop-infested area in Frederick at 2 am, a friend with an E30 w/ a burnt-out headlight is driving behind me. A cop comes flying up behind us and my friend sees him and dips into a parking lot... to let me take the fall, I guess? I didn't see the cop until my friend swerved away... see him, e-brake my speed down to 40, and hit the cruise control. cop paces but gets bored and leaves.

Such is my life. By posting this, I'm invariably jinxing myself. :help

The e-brake isn't an instant-on-off thing, guys! Its just manually applying your rear brakes - only when you yank it all of a sudden to full lock do your rear wheels lock up. You use the e-brake - gently and with moderation - to avoid shining your brake lights and to avoid front-end-dip that occurs with normal braking.

Way to think on your feet george...heh

I suppose because we aren't exactly friends, you wouldn't have known any of this. Normally i'd take offense to your ignorance, but no hard feelings, its all good.
And if you must know, i am very proud to have been apart of terps soccer, its not at all easy to get on their team, being recruited out of highschool was a great accomplishment for me.

Back to the topic...i don't understand why others are being pulled over so often..? Isn't the fact that we own M3's and other bmw's possibly an indication of maturity or simply that we might be older than we actually are? I assume that others see me around and think i'm mid-late 20's, instead of nearly 23. Your cars don't stand out too much from everyone else....i rarely get pulled over. I've had this car for a little over 2 years and have been pulled 1 time for no front plate...and my car is yellow for gods sake and lowered with dark colored wheels. I drive all over the place too so don't argue its the area...heh

Isn't the fact that we own M3's and other bmw's possibly an indication of maturity or simply that we might be older than we actually are?

Actually, I think it is the opposite. Thinking that you are something special just because you own a BMW is a sign of immaturity, IMO.

Buying a used BMW (no offense to anyone who bought their car used. Just to those who think they are part of an elite club because they own a BMW) is nothing special. People buy new Maximas, Accords, Passats, etc all the time. These cars cost the same as some of the new/newer BMWs (1-2 year old BMWs). Do they think they are special?? Not everyone wants to own a BMW.

My philosophy; Drive a car because you like. Not for what other people will think of it/you. ;)

Andy,
I know what you are saying...i don't think i'm any better just b/c of a car. I meant more along the lines of profiling that police do. In their minds, someone that drives a bmw will more than likely be over a certain age...let alone someone that drives the more expensive bmw's ...eg. new E46, old M3...etc
thats all i meant good buddy.
Same goes for other nicer cars...maybe i should have said this instead of what i did. heh, ah well...can't win'em all

Just to play devil's advocate here... The officer might also think that if he does see what appears to be a young kid driving a $40K car (just to pick a number out of the air), that it's either a spoiled kid driving daddy's car, or that (heaven forbid) the car might be stolen. Obviously, I'm not saying I agree with that.

When I was 26 years old, I drove a Porsche 928. I also had hair down past my shoulders and didn't look at all like I belonged in the car. I got hassled a time or two because of it -- even when driving in an area of million dollar homes, where 928s weren't even an uncommon sight. I think that due to the fact that I had money and long hair, perhaps they thought I was a drug dealer or something. They wanted to search my car, which I refused to give consent to... (If only guilty people stood up for their rights, then pretty soon standing up for your rights would become an admission of guilt.)

I think that police who do "profile" (whether right or wrong) are generally looking for a combination of person/car/location which is out of the ordinary, rather than just targeting certain cars.

Way to think on my feet? Do you even know what alumni/alumnus means?? Here let me give you a definition-

alumnus

n : a person who has received a degree from a school (high school or college or university)

Mikey52...no i just have a bmw cca sticker..thats it.

George...i know that you are a combative person and thats just who you are. Think what you like, thats your prerogative. I will say that you do not need to explain the meaning of alumni or alumnus to me.
You are correct, i did not graduate from umd, however i did complete a minor in psychology while i was there.

Your definition of alumnus was lacking a few key parts...
From the American Heritage college Dictionary Fourth Edition (2002)...pg 43

a-lum-nus: A male graduate or former student of a school, college, or university. Coeducational institutions usually use alumni for students of both sexes. But those who object to masculine forms in such cases may prefer the phrase alumni and alumnae or the form alumnae/i, which is the choice of many women's colleges that have begun to admit men.

The first clause clearly states, "A male graduate or former student of a school, college or university" ...using the literal meaning of these words, i have in fact used the term alumni/alumnus correctly. I am a former student and athlete of the University of Maryland College Park. I'm sorry George but, you do need to make sure you read the entire definition and do not try to leave out key language.
I am a law major...i check everything. :nono

I believe the section that clearly states, "...former student of a school, college or university" ...Is accurate to the way in which i and others use this term. I am a former student and althete of the University of Maryland College Park. I'm sorry George but, you do need to make sure you read the entire definition and do not try to leave key wording out. Thanks for the psycho-analysis, I really needed to hear that from someone like you. When was the last time we spoke, two years ago? And you feel that it's your place to say that I am a "combative" person and that is my prerogative. I just thought it was odd when the Terp soccer team started to do really well you put it under your title (not that anyone gives a sh*t that you used to play for them). I also believe that you are still an undergrad, isn't that pre-law???

As for alumnus, when someone claims to be an alumnus of something that generally means they completed that school and recieved a degree from it. It doesn't mean they completed 2 years there and transfered out. Unless they want to mis-lead people of course.

neenja
07-06-2004, 05:43 PM
I thought you might make comments like that. It doesn't matter when we last spoke, you have not changed and i can tell...by your replies.
I don't particularly care what you think. The interesting thing is that you are taking offense to what i say....remember in an earlier post i said that i would normally take offense and that i did not?
As far as trying to make a distinction between law major and pre-law as you put it...well there is none...again not a good argument.
Maybe i am getting a little ahead of myself and i do not in any way feel like antagonizing you, if you do feel that i have...c'est la vie.
Your generalization of alumnus is however...incorrect. You may think what you like as i have said...let it be.
