1993 325i
I have replaced the fuel pump seals. i have relpaced the foam rings under the round plates (beneath the rear seat)
The smell used to bother me when my tank was full...but now it's worse... it is a constant smell filling my garage ...... i cannot smell it when i'm moving but it is strong when i pull up to a stoplight....
If all the seals are new and the hoses are tight (in back) where else could the smell be coming from.... It's getting really strong....

I had something similar go down with my Jeep and it turned out to be two busted up injectors. They were spewing gas and making the smell in the cabin almost unbearable. I would definitely recommend taking it to a shop if you havent already. You definitely dont wanna take chances if you have a substantial fuel leak.

Check the base of the nipples on the sending units. They sometimes get a hairline crack and will leak. Also check the fuel lines to make sure they are all properly attached. I suggest replacing the crappy BMW hose clamps for normal ones.

would driving your car hard cause this problem?

Not likely. You probably have a leak from somewhere, you can't trace down. Try this - pull the fuel pump fuse or relay while the car is running - this should remove a bunch of fuel from the system forward of the tank. Then leave the car for a while and see if the smell is still there. If it is, then the problem is probably with the lines, the sender or the tank area.

Hey Gowilly, did you find the problem yet? I just found a gas leak under the motor area of my car last night. Funny we both have '93 325's

I had the same problem with mine and it was caused by a small hairline crack at the nipple of the drivers side fuel pump and the gasket was also slightly pinched.
I fixed it by cleaning the area w/ Brakeclean wiping it down and then sprayed it again and let the Brakeclean dry. Once it's dry I dabbed silicon sealant over the crack and let it dry for 24hrs.
I overfilled my gas tank, so at every turn I'd manage to spill some back into the neck of the filler hole... After I used up some gas, it went away. Did this happen after a fill-up?

I just found my leak today, it was a gas line that feeds the rear of the motor. It was spraying gas all over a nice hot motor. :eyecrazy:
