Well, just got the car back from the shop. I'm breaking in a new lightweight flywheel and clutch, so I'm taking it easy on the 5. For those of you who live in Atlanta, I was on Hwy 92 in Roswell (cop haven). I notice a set of HID 5-series angel eyes coming up in the rear-view. He was coming up pretty fast; I'm thinking, just another teenie bopper in mommy's 530 auto. So, I keep my eye on him, and he passes me with authority, but this time, the engine wasn't whining...no sir...it was the deep roar of a V8. Yessir, the badge told all. 540i :buttrock So, I kick it down to 2nd, watching the RPMs match beautifully with the help of my new flywheel diet program. :D Just fyi, the stock flywheel weighed in at a hefty 42 pounds. The lightweight flywheel weighs only 13 lbs. Some serious acceleration is the end result.

Anyways, back to the 540...he had a Florida plate, which was odd, because I have a Florida plate, yet we were both in Georgia. He was middle-aged, glasses, and a hat turned backwards. All his windows were down, so I made sure he would hear my Eisenmann. (No resonator, No cats) I achieve his pace within seconds, watching the RPMs crave the powerband. At the same time, I'm telling myself not to go over 5K RPMs, or the clutch won't have a chance to find its niche. I notice that he installed the M5 wheels, and I'm wondering if he's done anything to the engine. We come to a light behind some cars, and he asks me what part of Florida I was from. I say "Gainesville", and he tells me he was from West Palm. I'm like enough with 20 questions, what the hell do you have done to the car?? He says all he has is some software, didnt say from who, and a cold-air intake. So I tell him I like his car and all, and he says he wants to see how his stacks up to mine. I'm like "SURE!", I mean how many opportunities do I have to run it with another E39 540? I've tried, and all I get are doctors, lawyers, and the occasional soccer-moms that think the best thing about the car is the extra grocery space in the trunk.

So in order to race, we let the cars up ahead get some distance. I'm still thinking about my clutch/flywheel and how they're about to have a rude awakening. We're both rolling in 1st at around 10 mph. He does the count...

1...
2....
3!

I bury the pedal, and the back end of my 5 looses traction. The RPM needle sweeps the power band, and before I know it, I've passed my break-in point of 5K RPMs. I'm now approaching the redline, and I shift immediately to avoid bouncing off the limiter. The rear looses traction again for a good 1 1/2 seconds, and before 65, I'm having deja vu with his HIDs in the rear-view once again. I had no need to take the car any further. So, I put it in neutral, and I savor the weightless drop of the tach needle. I slow down, and he arrives at my side. He then says the following, "I knew I would lose to an M5 hands down." I'm then realizing what I just heard. Since I have a full M5 bodykit and an Eisenmann quad-tip exhaust system, plus the DINAN5 badging, he took me for an M5. I didn't want to ruin his day by telling him that I was of the same breed. :D So I kept my mouth shut and just laughed, and we went on our merry ways.

:alright

Haha. When I lost traction, it wasnt the type of wheelspin that is experienced in the rain. The rear wheels acted as if they were skipping on the asphalt; almost like a pulsating vibration until they locked up. It only happened briefly, and then they finally grabbed the ground.

As far as perfermoance mods, I have a Dinan carbon fiber intake, Dinan throttle body, Dinan software, Eisenmann Race exhaust w/quad-tip M5 application, no CATS, no resonator, and my new lightweight flywheel (13 lbs. from stock 42 lbs.) I have TONS of other mods, but they are non-performance oriented. I just love having a 4-door that rivals other sport coupes and/or sports cars. As an M5 owner, I'm sure you understand. Sweet car by the way. :D

I say go for it! The E39 540i/6 is an incredible machine. You can really transform the way the car behaves with just a few minor modifications. I wish I could take you for a ride. It's absolutely thrilling. :evil2

I think i'll look for a silver (or black) with black interior (Thats a 100% must have).

Are there any aluminum trim kits available to replace the wood grain?

Sweet! I was looking for a silver/black as well. I love them both. But just like you said, they have to have black interior. And yes, there are aluminum trim kits available. I simply installed the M5 interior trim, which was really expensive, but you know how that goes.

Some other tuners like Bekkers and BavAuto make aftermarket trim kits, but they usually have fitment issues, and/or are poor quality. I would recommend hunting on eBay for a good deal on OEM stuff. I got my center console piece that way. I actually have on extra one if you're interested.

So, without the catalytic converters, is the sound different? Does it effect emmissions? Maybe I'll do that when I change exhausts.....

With that big of a change in flywheel weight, do you have any issues with rattling from the flywheel when it's in neutral with the clutch out?

So, without the catalytic converters, is the sound different? Does it effect emmissions? Maybe I'll do that when I change exhausts.....

When I installed the Eisenmann race exhaust on the 5, I wasn't too thrilled with the sound. It was clean, but very muffled and somewhat toned-down. So, I then decided to remove the resonator, and man, what a difference. Not as far as performance goes, but the sound was incredible. People now knew for a fact within earshot that I had upped my performance in the exhaust department. So, later on down the road, I had been hearing about people removing cats on their ZO6s, M3s, etc., so I decided to do just that. I removed the cats to find that the sound is almost on the verge of noise pollution. Not that it sounds bad or anything, I'm just finding myself depressing the clutch every time I pass a cop on the road, to not draw attention to myself. I mean it's LOUD! And not to mention the cars pulls a lot HARDER. As far as your question goes regarding emmissions, the car without cats will FAIL MISERABLY. I have Florida tag registration, and they don't have emmissions. :buttrock And finding a local muffler shop that will remove them for you is an arduous task as well, since the procedure is illegal and can warrant you and the shop jail time and/or a hefty fine. So, in that regard, I would take it into consideration. OBDII stuff is fine. It won't affect any air/fuel ratios. Let me know if you have any other questions. :D

Just like you said, with that big of a weight difference, the flywheel does make a slight gear-lash noise. My exhaust drowns it out usually :D , but in certain situations, like waiting at the drive-thru, you can hear the lash bouncing off of the adjacent wall. It doesn't bother me at all; it's just a constant reminder that I have one of the lightest flywheels made possible for the E39 540i. (Dinan goes with a mild 24lbs. setup  ) But in that regard, the noise may make performance-illiterate people think there is something wrong with your car, by which at that time you offer to run it with them, and show exactly how your "broken" car holds it's own. :D

I gotta keep my eyes open on 92 for you man.. (I live in Roswell, moving to a new home off of Trickum) ^5 for eating up the 540!

Another guy posted a kill story run on 92 here - Good hwy for runs, but watch out for the po' po'!

And keep your eyes peeled for a 00' white dropped accord on 92. I'd normally say it isnt worth the time(especially yours), but this guy sounds really mean under the hood (not stock engine by far, and no Fart Can (tm), amazingly enough). Race seats, looked like a partial roll cage too.

Good times, hope you make one of our meets again, I want to eye your car up closer then I did last time.

So you say there's a sleeper accord running around, huh? :devillook I'll be on the look out. :D

The flywheel is made by a company down in Florida known as JB Racing. They make custom BMW, Porsche, and Ferrari racing parts, and used to make flywheels for Active before they went out on their own. I highly recommend them.
