View Full Version : 98 BMW m3 vs e39 530i (i know i know)
Luftwaffe1O1 06-22-2004, 04:17 AM Anywho, wasn't really a big competition, as much as just fun. We were both stopped at a red light. I sorta glanced over, it looked like an older gentleman, maybe his mid 30s early 40s, so i figured he probably wouldnt be down for a little spirited driving. I started normally, as did he, but then he sorta speeds up, and i follow, i shift to second at about 4500rpms, jerk forward a bit quicker, and he guns it, i follow, i pass him and keep going until the next red light. I come to a full stop, he was a few carlengths behind me, and guns it past the light, as it turns green.
At this point, i figure oh man its on. So for any of you San Diegans, this was on mercy road, off of the 15, headed towards black mountain road. Anywho. He passed me while i was stopped, so i gun it, catch up to him at about 80mph. Keep in mind the "suggested" speed limit is about 45, but it was fairly clear, as in no other cars to be seen. At this point I am still in 4th gear at about 80, and I hit it until about 125, and 5th gear. At this point he could no longer hang, because the road is kinda windy, but man oh man, i couldnt believe it, the car tore the road up, I slowed down after I lost sight of him.
It wasn't like a very even race, but we both had fun, at the next light, we were both making left turns, I could see him wiping the sweat from his neck hehe, i was kind of sweating too, it was very nice feeling.

Surprise me? I dont think so, i am well aware as to what it will do to me lol :)
But this was in the twisties mainly :) And it was a 530, i sort of felt like i was picking on him.
slickav 06-22-2004, 04:51 PM Those damn 530's give me a hard time. I would think with all that weight they would be somewhat slower :az:
BabyM 06-22-2004, 04:55 PM Nice friendly run!
I wonder if his wife wears granny panties? ;)

Aye it was a nice little run :)
I didn't get a chance to ask him about the kind of panties his wife wore...
But hey granny underpants have their uses, you know you are out in the woods somewhere, need to pitch a tent real quick....

HOLY LAME-AZZ STEREOTYPE BATMAN!
Geez, I guess us old farts should sell our toys, since we are too old for any "spirited driving"
Give me a freakn break...
(I turn 35 next month, I think I will sell my M3 and get a Towncar....) NOT!

Yes, they provide lots of shelter :)
And to answer your Q from the other thread...No they're not, I was wearing cargo pants with drawstrings. --I'm a VS girl anyway :D

Well I am not saying its true for all people, but most of the time, people in this age group will not be willing to go, especially not in a 530. If it was an M3 diff story, but 530 is more of a lux sedan etc. Not very sport oriented.
don't underestimate the 530i. it's auto (what most of it's drivers would get) gets far better 0-60 than the 330i auto, by a full 2 seconds I think. in fact, the only difference between the slush and stick is 3 tenths, pretty damn impressive.
i love the car though, my dad had an e39 before he picked up an e60. so hard to find some people to race, but I managed to get a Camaro z28 (which I actually was beating, straight line, then it just roared past me, and he was trying (launching etc). might have been turboed/super, because there was obvious power lag. another time was a 740iL, which was damn fun because i had a really really hot girl in teh front, and 2 friends in teh back, but unfort i assumed he didnt want to run then he goes speeding past me and i didnt get a chance to catch up, but i was catching up :(.

Manual 330 is quicker, auto for some reason, the 530 is .1 seconds quicker... supposedly.
according to website:
manual 6.6
auto 6.9
330i
manual 6.4
auto 7.0
weird, i remember something different. maybe brochure reads differently.
either way, i love the 530i.
Schneller Bayer 06-22-2004, 08:35 PM Actually the 530 with sport package is very sport orientated for a lux sedan. That's why it's been heralded by many as the best car in the world, and the best car in its class. No it won't be as nimble as an m3, but comes far closer than anything in its comparable class. And it's very luxurious. My father used to have a 540i, and that car likes to go!

Yeah. not that i think about it, the 530i isnt as slow as i assumed lol :), but unlike the 540i it wont take me higher up :)
SilverStreak 06-22-2004, 10:20 PM Is the new 530's auto a 5 spd auto, or a 6 spd...?
C32Guy 06-22-2004, 11:07 PM 6 speed auto
SilverStreak 06-22-2004, 11:25 PM Might have something to do with that disparity between comparable 330's and 530's, etc... :dunno

yeah, my mother has an 03 530, and its definitely is quick. i remember destroying a 3.5 altima on teh parkway. push the shifter left and up twice, a nice downshift to 3rd from 5th and youre gone.

And don't forget that pesky little touring that likes to run with the dogs! :redspot
GuapOh 06-23-2004, 08:03 PM The 530i Sport Package is a great sport sedan. Lacks the brute strength of 540 but a very respectable and dangerous car to the unsuspecting. I've had great fun in mine both at the track (Thunderhill Park) and on local twisties. I guess I fit into the taget demographic of the typical 5 series buyer: 35 years of age, wife, kid, recently made partner in law office. But do not think for a minute that "spirited driving" is beyond me or others in my age group. Check out my kill post dated 6-12-04. The post is titled "e39:1, Ford Probe GT:0, CHP -2".
I'm a former San Diego resident having lived in Escondido, San Marcos and Point Loma for the first 28 years of life and know SD County like the back of my own hand. 125 MPH on Mercy road is *%$@ing huge dude, you are a hero. I love it.
Next time I'm down in my e39 I'll be tearin' it up. Look for the Electric Red 530i, it'll be me. According to BMW less than 1% of 530i buyers went for the Electric Red because most people find it way too bright for a large sedan. Not me, I love it. Everybody has the blue, white, slate green or silver e39's. Gimme the gorgeous Electric Red beauty. Its the first car seen at the stop light. hehehehe.
Hasta.
Luftwaffe1O1 06-23-2004, 09:01 PM Yeah, id did underestimate the 530i, now that i look at it, it seems like it is alot quicker than i thought. I'll be damned lol. As for stereotyping, yeah I know its not accurate, I mean most of the time I won't bite unless its a fun race.
But yeah, it was pretty scary, i didnt maintain 125 too long, no longer than 10 seconds but at that speed, thats enough to traverse a large section of the road. When i finally came to a stop, i was sweating too.
GuapOh 06-23-2004, 11:42 PM I would have been sweatin' NIAGRA FALLS style @ 125 on Mercy Road. Were you heading downhill towards Penasquitos Canyon or uphill towards Poway?
Luftwaffe1O1 06-23-2004, 11:57 PM I would have been sweatin' NIAGRA FALLS style @ 125 on Mercy Road. Were you heading downhill towards Penasquitos Canyon or uphill towards Poway?
downhill towards black mountain.
GuapOh 06-25-2004, 03:54 PM Sweet. Black Mountain is a good hill to climb up from that intersection headed towards Mt. Carmel HS. Damn, still can't imagine going that fast on that roadway. If any BMW can do it I know an M3 could handle it with a compentent driver behind wheel.
Mazda ain't got nothin' on a motivated Beamer............Zoom, Zoom.
