i was going over to my friend's house and i always enjoy going up there because its got some serious, serious twisties and its also very narrow. so i had my top down and just crusing around 35-45 (mine is bone stock but its loaded w/ sport package etc). and all of a sudden i see this red rx-7 catching up on me. i was like "hell yes finally someone to race in twisties!!!" :D cuz my car is pretty heavy and i dont usually race in straightaways. so i kept my gear in 2nd and 3rd going about 55-75 (thx to michellins  ) he was about a car length behind me whenever there was a short straightaway but whenever i got to the corner, lets just say it was sad :stickoutt he was going over the double yellow line, like 7 car lengths behind me etc.. haha... bmws can really handle corners.. dang it was fun

would be hard to believe that the rx-7 handles worse than the 325cic

I think drivers skill plays a little bit bigger part!

Yeah drivers skill is a big part. RX-7 are quite hard to drive fast unless you are a good driver.
My experience in one was that there is very little warning between grip and slip although it did seem pretty easy to hold the slide.

I personally would be faster in a BMW in the twisties purely because it is confidence inspiring and just because I don't think I would be a good enough driver to push the RX-7 to the limit without getting it wrong at some point.

its just that my bmw communicates with me. like i can feel her through the steering wheel. and the most important part is that she is so predictable. i was going like 55 through the corner and sorta drifting and stuff.. FUN :D ahhh that feel.. its like having orgasm..but like.. from the steering wheel? lol

one of the guys i know has a rx7 twin turbo, exhaust everything. its pretty fast but too bad my friend's 04 m3 smg (bone stock) kicked his ass, all 3 runs :nono

um what mods does your friends rx7 have my friend has yet to loose to an m3

hoonpv
06-21-2004, 04:19 AM
not so sure. hes name is chandler and half azn. red rx-7 and i heard he has a twin turbo. and i saw his exhaust so... they did total of 3 runs and first he messed up big time and lost by about 7 car lengths. and the 2nd run was pretty close but the m3 won by a car length or so. the funniest thing is that in the 3rd run, there was an old cadillac infront of the m3, so the m3 cuts rx-7 =/ won by like 2 car lengths or so. :D

hoon, you likely beat the driver, not the car, in that he probably wasn't willing or comfy pushing it in the twisties (wise move, by the way, for someone to know their own limits in handling a car, etc)...

the rx7 is pure sex in handling too bad the driver couldn't drive it. My rx is on of the easiest cars to drive hard I have ever driven, it communicates ever pebble and is so stuck to the ground it is unreal. The boost issue is something you get used to quickly just don't hit full boost at or before the apex and your fine, you want to be spooling the turbos as you come into the turn, heel toe is VERY useful for this.

I would love to run more people in the rx but alas it has to go. For the record again, my rx, somewhat modded, is handedly faster then my m5 and I absolutely smoked an e46 on the highway and the twisties.

not really, I have a ported and polished motor, CAI, DP, Cat back, computer and medium sized intercooler. all but the motor mods are "bolt on" and even without the port and polish I think it would still be faster then my m5.

I have a stock 2001 m5.

i was so confused whether he wanted it or not cuz he was at my ass and then felt back in corners. what the whack? and i do think bmws handle just as well as the rx-7s. its more like driver's game from there.

Do you find that the front end gets "loose" around 125mph+ due to the light engine? My uncle always complained of this, but it didn't seem that way at all to me.

Hoon, an RX-7 driven remotely enthisiastically would anhialate you.

You're obviously under some kind of illusion as to what you're driving.

no but I have a modded suspension. I have seen 135-140 on the straight at limerock and the car was glued to the ground! more stable then my 95 m3 or the 00 s4.

Dave yes I was thinking Wed, 6/30 for etown

Not even close to a drivers game, the rx should handle better then an e36 m3 let alone a non m 3 series. The rx7 is what (I am guessing here) 800lbs lighter then a 3 series convert? RX is 2700ish lbs.

As someone said it is one of the best handling cars in the world.

6/30.... maybe. I'm trying to take 7/2 and 7/5 off, so I'll have to let you know next week, see how my week is shaping up, etc... it's a 2 hr drive for me each way, so I'd need to cut out before rush hour, etc...

I'm the guy who deleted the post, I figured why get into it. IMO a stock G3 RX7 would not hold its ground against a late model M5...but it really doesn't matter anyway they are completely different feeling cars.

a stock 3rd gen would not keep up with an e39 m5 in a straight line but would still out handle it.

a mildly modded (read bolt on) rx7 can easily run 12's which should be able to keep up with an m5.

It is fun to keep things civil and learn about other cars capabilities stock and modded.

roger that,

it would be easy to believe that the rx-7 driver wasnt even "racing".
he was probably just daily driving

Mabe the RX7 driver didn't really want to push it on unfamiliar roads?

Quiksilver7
06-22-2004, 06:08 PM
... or the driver saw who it was and slowed down to avoid getting keyed after he parked :devillook

Sorry couldn't resist.

But yes, the 3rd gen RX7 is one of my favorite cars of all time... the Mazda engineers spent countless hours perfecting it's balance (50/50) and reducing weight everywhere (2800 lbs).

So... with a 50/50 weight distribution, 2800 lbs, and 255 hp twin-turbo motor stuck in a super ridgid chassy this story is hard to believe he was actually pushing it.

yea i regret it now. i was a moron.

seems there are many rx-7ers out there... its not like bmws dont have the near 50/50 ratio. its just that bmw and rx7 are different cars. one is a luxury sport sedan (or coupe) and the other is hmm.. just fast car? lol.. well bmws actually think about the safety of the car and stuff. which cause them to be pretty heavy. not to mention that they are rear wheel drive. (are the rx7 rear wheel drive?) both really good cars. i dont think one is better than the other. just different customers i guess. i do love love the look of 3rd gen rx7... good cars...

that is a joke right? stock they are mid 5 second cars and they are 11 years old! with basic bolt ons ie downpipe, midpipe, exhaust and CAI, (you need a computer with these mods to keep the boost under control) you are adding over 50hp, a 2800lbs car with more than 300 hp is not slow.

RX-7s are not at all underpowered, 255hp + 2800 pounds. This was already mentioned in the thread so why would you think its underpowered.

A good running one with a good driver should be mid 13s stock. Figure in mods which arent very expensive and you have quite a quick car. Trust me, you dont want to come across a single turbo one.

Just like your car it was designed with the twisties in mind, it can easily leave you for dead in the twisties if the driver is skilled and so inclined.

BMWs are great cars, the interior of that mazda is probably more superglue than plastic, yet its a great handling and quick car. Your BMW is not the end all of cars.

Just wanted to say YOU beat the driver in the 7.

If he was on you in the straights and backing off and crossing yellows in the corners than he was trying hard.

But it is really sad on his part and a big bounus to you becuase I have owned several 7s and I have never driven a car that preformed better than a 7.

I Really do feel it is one of the best handling cars out there. I have a set of twisties that I take almost every day to work and its not unual for me to take the corners 10-20 mph faster in the 7. If I could drive my BMW and my 7 through the twisties at the same time. I would absolutly shame my bimmer.

if you have never driven a 7 I would say you should go test drive one for fun. the stick so well it bends the mind.

And as for pushing to thier limits. they excellent if you know them. I can slip front back or drift all 4 tires on the edge of grip and its not twitchy or abrupt.

Anyway I sold my 7 yesterday and its a tough car to let go of but the point is you Total whooped that driver.

In my eyes it couldnt be any bigger of a twisties win even if you posted against a lambo or something.

Props

You beat the Driver. you, nor your car beat the RX-7. a brand new RX-7 was formidable. Ive driven a G3 RX-7 single turbo converesion, 800CC injector, turboback exh, ECU reprogram, Cone filter, Tein suspension, msd ignition, greddy profec b I boost controller, short shift kit + Ti linkage...perelli Zero serie tires, this beast for those $4000 in mods, out drove the last M3 i rode in. the car is naturally awesome.

congrats on driver defeat. :buttrock
