View Full Version : Who Tracks & Auto-Xs?
Bob ///M3 04-07-2001, 08:16 PM Please tell me if you:
1- Track race your car.
2- Autocross your car.
3- How many events per year you participate in.
4- How long you been participating in these events.
We may be looking for one or more moderators for a new forum named Track, Auto-X and Drag. We would prefer someone (or more than one) with track and auto-X event experience.
The forum will be for discussing "organized racing". Topics such as car set-ups, preparations, driving technique, track tips, events, schools, maintenance, classifications, safety, etc.
Thank you,
Bob ///M3
C.Yang 04-07-2001, 08:46 PM I auto-x whenever I can, without drivin too far. Ive done it for about 6 months, and love it. When i get time and money, I will do some schools too. I'm keeping away from track racing cause I don't have the money for tires, etc.
mpbmw318is 04-07-2001, 10:31 PM oh god you have no idea how bad i want to. too bad for me i am broke. yup, thats what my baby does to me, but i love every mintue i spend in my car, so i figure its worth it. :)

1- Not yet... kinda scared to abuse the car that long. 1 raced mile is 1000 regular miles or something like that?
2- Yup
3- so far... 1
4- uh... the last event I participated in was in march.
:D
themadhatter 04-08-2001, 02:49 PM 1. I do not track my car. Something about rubbing paint with a wall or anther car at 95mph doesn't appeal to me. besides, auto-x'ing is much safer, cones give way, barriers don't.
2. auto-x only, the most fun you can have for $25 and not get busted for reckless driving.
I run as #007 with the NJ SCCA this year and #777 last year.
I'm probably going to be in CSP class this year and the BMW CCA puts me D-Stock running when I auto-x with the club.
3. about 7 per year, as my schedule and wallet allows. brakes and tires don't come cheap, so now I run endurance pads year round on my daily driver and I need to buy another set of R compound tires.
4. this will be my second year.
E36 Fanatic 04-09-2001, 11:50 PM I try to autocross my car here at Clemson Univ. whenever I can. The sports car club here has an auto x about 4 times a semester. Comming up at the end of April, we are hosting BMW and Porsche to hold an auto x here! Should be a lot of fun, and I'll post pics when i can.

Cannon 04-10-2001, 02:56 AM Well, I used to race karts back in high school. I had been autocrossing my Camaro a couple of times a year for the last couple of years, but was recently bitten by the open track bug. My Camaro then spun a bearing, so in the quest for a track car/wife's daily driver, I came home with a '97 M3.
Now I've got the following in addition to the car:
Sparco seat
Harness bar w/4 pt. harness
Track rims/tires
Track rotors/pads
Tons of ATE Superblue
A very understanding wife :).
Answers:
1. Yes
2. Not anymore
3. About 8-10 per year
4. Autocrossing - 8 years or so (only 2 or 3 per year, though) Open track events - only a year so far

1) I just acquired a 89 325i race car...not street legal...to race in the Pacific Coast Touring Car Championship (west coast). On my maiden voyage in the car I rear-ended someone on track...but the car was not damaged too much..it is at the body shop getting put back together. I go on track with my other car...Audi S4 (chipped/H&R coilovers/Neuspeed-Borla catback exhaust/short shifter/cryoed rotors with porterfield race brake pads)....and I use to track my Audi A4. I have had about 32 track days in my various cars at many different tracks (Thunderhill - 25 days, Sears Point - 2 days, Laguna Seca - 3 days, Spring Mtn-Pahrump NV - 4 days...and I plan to do Willow Springs and Buttonwillow later this summer)
2) I have not been autoxing my BMW yet...but plan to..since it is pretty modified..I gotta figure out what class it should be in. I autocrossed my Audi about 6 times in 98, 10 times in 99, 15 times in 00, and 3 times so far this year in '01. I got third place in CSP in SF Region SCCA last year in my Audi S4. SF Region is a very active region with about 275 cars competing each event...kinda big.
3) see #1 and #2 above
4) I started autoxing in 1985 in my 84 VW GTI, competed in 1986 in my 85 Golf GTI...and then took a 12 year sabbatical to have kids...coming back to autocrossing in January 98.
I feel that I could add some value. BTW, I am also a moderator on Audiworld and VW Vortex websites.
http://www.audiworld.com
http://www.vwvortex.com
Let me know if you need assistance. I plan to be more active with my BMW, hence the reason why I am currently posting on the bimmerforums.
Bob ///M3 04-10-2001, 11:01 PM Steve, it sure sounds like you have the track experience...(25 days at Thunderhill alone)! If you are able and willing to be a moderator of our new forum; you got it! No doubt you will add value to the forum and I'm sure assistance where you can for our members.
We will gladly add you as a moderator for our "Track, Auto-X and Drag" forum.
Thanks!
Best regards,
Bob ///M3
PS- This will be done tonight or tomorrow...
Steve S 04-10-2001, 11:22 PM This forum is similar to Ultimate Bulletin Board, so I am comfortable with it.
:)
Bob ///M3 04-10-2001, 11:26 PM Great Steve!
There shouldn't be much, if any "moderating" to do. It should be fun as the season is really just getting started.
Welcome aboard!
Bob ///M3
Steve S 04-10-2001, 11:36 PM Did you get that graphic from cartoons.com?
Ryan H 04-11-2001, 12:09 AM 1 - No organized racing. Contemplating on whether to get into karting or try to pursue club racing. $$$ do not allow either as of now. I'd love to acquire an E30 325is for a track car. In my opinion, tracking a car other than drivers schools is not worth it without track-ready brakes, cage, and harnesses. The risks outweigh the rewards.
2 - Planning to attend several of the GGC BMWCCA and Norcal NASA events this year.
3 - So far, attended one school at Buttonwillow and a GGC Car Control Clinic.
4 - Looking forward to autocrossing this year.
Bob ///M3: thanks for putting up this forum. Its gonna be great!

Bob ///M3 04-11-2001, 12:12 AM Yes Steve, I did get the car gif from their site and then I modified it a little myself to suit my needs!

Hmmm... Let's see:
1) I've attended one track school, but most likely won't attend another until I have a car I can afford to walk away from if something goes wrong.
2) Occasionally. :) (see below)
3) 35-45 autocrosses per year.
4) I've been autocrossing for around 4 years.

I'd be interested, but it looks like you might have the job covered for now. I've moderated on a few other boards having to do with BMW as well as racing specific boards. Let me know if any of the other forums need some help.
Thank you,

Hey Bob, I notice you are from Winston. Do I know you?

2- Autocross your car.

Umm, IT what? ITS? Nope, thats the 325's domain. ITE? Nope, no longer available in the SeDiv of SCCA (it sounds like you are in the SE considering your Panoz RA schools). And, even if ITE were available, you won't have much fun running against 600hp P-Cars, Corvettes, Mustangs, etc.
If you want to race an E30 M3, you better be looking into CCA Club Racing...its really the only place to race one competitively. Now, you could prepare the car to SCCA GT safety specs and run in the Nationalized unlimited class SPO/U. Here, you will still be competing against VERY high powered cars that will run circles around you.
If you want to go IT racing, get yourself an E36 325. The car can be built to go just as fast, if not faster than a BMW CCA Prepared class E30 M3. With the 325, you will be able to run SCCA ITS and BMW CCA KP, as well as NASA PS-4. A good driver could even probably run mid-pack in a Speedvision Touring Car Race in a well setup 325 ITS car. As you can see, the 325 opens up a LOT more racing venues.
Or, you could wait a couple seasons and buy my car when I move up to a National SCCA class. ;)
See ya at the track!
EDDINANM3 04-14-2001, 12:53 AM No autocross yet.
Track; 3 days at PIR
3 days at SIR
Started; Last march
Just got my ICSCC novice license, doing my first race Memorial Day weekend at Spokane Raceway.:)

Bob ///M3 04-14-2001, 01:07 AM Hi Bryan,
The reason I was asking the original question was because we were looking for two or three moderators for this new forum (just recently added). We presently have two members moderating it now. If you would like we can always add you as another moderator, especially considering you are more familar with the tracks and events here on the East coast. Let me know if you would like to help moderate this forum.
I don't believe I've ever had the pleasure of meeting you Bryan but hopefully one day soon I will. I'll look forward to it!

1. Yes!
2. not much
3. as many as possible (time and money)

John@BPG 04-15-2001, 11:32 AM BMWRacer,
Thanks for the advice about the 325. I guess I got some bad info on the e30. I'm not in the South East, in the NE. Luckly I haven't started anything, I just have the dibs on a slight front end damaged e30. So changing to a 325 should be good.

"Marie" , my 1997 740il & I just did our third track event at Summit Point VA. with The Riesentoter PCA, (local Porsche Club) where we had the pleasure of surprising some Porsche guys. We managed to do well with the Boxters, however the 911's and 911 Turbos are simply TOO MUCH for my Luxury Touring Sedan. Anyway a wonderful time was had by all. I arranged for a CD of photos a photographer took at the track. When it arrives, I will try & post some pics.
