I want to have my carpet dyed from tan to black and wanted to know if anyone knew the best ways of going about this. I have heard of having it sprayed on with an air gun or using the VHT spray dye etc.. but I would just like to know the best way for doing this. Any help would be great. Thanks

I've heard that VHT dye works really well. Comes in a spray can and is easy to apply. Do a search, I think there is a thread about it. Do a google search for VHT dye.

Yeah, there's tons of threads on using VHT on door panels etc... it's just not many have actually used it on the carpet. It says on the label that it can be done, but people here on bf.c tend to not recommended it and say it turns out like crap. Has anyone actually done (or tried) this? Even if you didn't use VHT and you used some other dye, I'd like to hear what some people have attempted (failed or not).

Im actually gonna try this on the carpet. I dyed my door panels and back seats and armrest, etc, etc. I dont want to spend $3-400 on a new carpet when I have $4 cans of VHT dye. Im gonna do a light spray cause everyone says it will turn the carpet "crusty" but I figure the floormats cover the parts you touch anyway...

Awesome. Please post your results and any tips either during the process, or when you finish.

Just finished... took about 3 hours and 3 cans of dye, but I also did my dash:

crappy pic but you get the idea:

You can see part of the stock gray color towards the top. The seat will cover that so Im not worried about it:

Looks great. Did the texture of the carpet change? I don't want mine to feel all crusty. Did you work it in with a brush, or just spray it on and leave it as is?

Im still letting it dry but I dont forsee it getting crusty. I did 2 light layers with the spray can. Like I said before, people dont actually touch the carpet, its just for looks, so if it is a little crusty Im not worried.

The dash looks sort of blotchy -- is that just from the photo? I would be interested in a closeup.

pics can show where it was sprayed etc. part of my interior is sprayed where other parts are original. in person, they are the same exact color but photos make the died parts look darker.

nice job by the way.

Thanks, yeah in pics you can tell contrasting spots better but in person it looks pretty damn good.

Looks good. I've wondered about that dye, too. Might be the right thing to use on the sun-faded material behind the rear seats.

BTW, I'm glad you didn't get any dye on that cute little stuffed animal in the cupholder.:)
