I don't know too much about lighting so can someone please fill me in? What are the differences between the 5300k and the 6 and 7 and 8k lights? I'm very interested because I've been planning on upgrading to some Xenon lights for my E36.
SupaBimma 06-09-2004, 03:33 AM two of the 5300k pics wont work. anyone got any McCullough pics ?
I am definately interested if its $285 shipped. Does anyone know what type of bulbs the Depo ellipsoids use? let me know
JT///M3 06-09-2004, 03:54 AM depos use H7. I bought a CATZ kit last year for $400 and I'm getting a 2nd set for the other ///M this year. At 285 shipped for basically the same system, its a steal.
to my understanding, the higher the color temp, the lower the light output in lumens. thats why I prefer 5300k vs. 10000k. I'm blind and I don't care to have blue/purple/pink/green lights...just need more light! :-)

BMWManiac 06-09-2004, 04:23 AM what issues are there to installing HIDs besides possibility of wires melting or LBF? Which ones has the blueish/purpleish tint? Just curious and the search wasn't too helpful with this...thanks.

I don't think melting of wires is an issue unless you've got the bulb ON the wires. The LBF fix can be found here and is super easy to do (will do this tomorrow):
http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=203520&goto=newpost
I have the 6000K kit but I've got different kits. I would suspect that, when new, they are blueish. If you go higher (e.g., 7-8k) then you'll see more puple. 12000k (not offered here) are pretty much pure purple.
Oh, and as far as the install goes, I'll be posting a thread on how to install an HID kit into my highs soon (in the next couple days - most likely before you guys even finish this deal) which is essentially the same as installing them into your lows. I just need to fix my LBF and figure out how to rig the fogs on when the highs are on. THEN I'll post the install. :)
themadhatter 06-09-2004, 04:59 AM how long is the harness from the ballast to the actual bulbs? I can use a set of HIDs for my fogs. :)

Where are you planning to mount your ballasts? I mounted mine near my fogs. The wire was long enough for me. It should even be long enough if you mounted it near your lows (although I'm not sure why you would want to). If not, you can always just buy extra wire at Radio Shack and add more.
On top of that, it's hard to find a spot for TWO ballasts near the low beams. I was about to mount my ballast on TOP of my low beam ballasts since I was running out of space. I ended up mounting it in a different direction since it wouldn't fit lined up on the bumper (hard to explain). I'll post a link to my high beam install soon. :)
themadhatter 06-09-2004, 05:28 AM actually I do want to mount them where my other ballasts are. I'd rather have them reachable rather then install them behind my bumper - the steel beam. Figure if I eat another dear again, I'll just need new bulbs rather then the nearly impossible to buy ballasts.
that's about it really. my OG HID wiring is short, like 24".

Where are your current ballasts mounted? In the engine bay? If yours are mounted behind the bumper in that steel beam (like mine are), you'd only be able to mount one nicely along the bumper. I only got one to mount horizontally. My other one was mounted vertically (slightly hanging off the bumper trim). It still stuck nicely but not as "clean".
If it's in the engine bay, you're probably going to need extra wires. I think most HID kits have around 24". All three of mine do.
themadhatter 06-09-2004, 07:53 AM one is in the cold air intake 'box' (conforti cai) and the other one is mounted between the windshield washer resivior (sp?) and fender.
thanks for the info - I'm just hesitant to pull off my bumper again.

Wait, pull off your bumper? Why would you need to do that to install the ballasts? Just get some industrial strength Velcro and you're good to go. :dunno
I've got 2 ballasts in the metal bumper trim and one below near my fogs. Seems to work fine for me. I mean, you're going to have to remove the headlights anyway to do this install. Might as well mount them down there when the headlights are out. Much easier than removing the bumper.
themadhatter 06-09-2004, 08:26 AM pull off the bumper for a true stealth install. velcro is crap, I used the good stuff on my current ballasts and the glue melted off of them.
either way, I'm happy with where my setup is located. If I do the fogs, I'd like to pair of the ballasts for an easy install.

mbanks21 06-09-2004, 08:57 AM Not to rain on your parade but we used to carry Mccullogh HIDS (G-garage) and we dropped them due to too many complaints about quality. This was last year so I dont know if theyve resolved the issues but Ill stick with X-tec. Weve put them on numerous cars with no problems.

Pull off the bumper? I don't see why you would need to do that. Are you hiding them somewhere? You can access every part of the bumper from up top when the headlights are out.
The velcro I used is definitely NOT crap. Industrial strength and NOT the regular type. SUPER sticky and it took some major force for me to remove the ballasts last week to switch them out. They work. Just as good as screwing them in.

I've heard this also about the Mccullogh kits. The guys over @ hidforum.com have a pretty low opinion of them.
JT///M3 06-09-2004, 11:17 PM can you guys substantiate these quality issues? be more specific and I can bring them up with the seller.

Like I said, Im not trying to crap on your GB but Ive used G-Garage/Mcculloch HIDS and we had quite a few blown ballasts and dimming bulbs after 6 months and its very difficult to get a hold of them. I do believe they are Korean also, which in and of itself isnt bad but Id rather go with a more OE based kit
BS05ZHP 06-10-2004, 10:27 AM What he said. I remember lots of folks having issues with the wiring being sub-par and ballast burning out over on those forums.
///MacDaddy 06-10-2004, 10:38 AM Wow! Sounds like you get what you pay for...who woulda thought? :)
JT///M3 06-10-2004, 01:55 PM here's what the seller told me:
In the past there has been a problem with blowing ballasts. About 9 months ago, the manufacturer upgraded the ballasts and its much improved.
We warranty our kits up to 6 months, so even if anything would happen to go wrong, we would be happy to take care of it for you.
JT///M3 06-10-2004, 01:57 PM sounds like he is confident enough to warrant it for 6 months. from the HIDforums posts, it seems like all the blown ballast occured before 6 months.
mbanks21 06-10-2004, 02:00 PM Thats fine for some people. My Xtec has a 5 year warranty. What ballasts do they use now?
JT///M3 06-10-2004, 02:07 PM btw, thanks for the info. better to be informed that go blindly into something.
clumpymold 06-19-2004, 01:29 AM Is this deal still going on?
Bump! ;)
Dark Vadors 06-19-2004, 03:27 AM yah i might be interested how many people are there on the list????
Philipangoo 06-19-2004, 02:22 PM lol i wanted them but those posts scared the crap out of me. Maybe ill just spend a few extra bucks and get some Philips

McCullogh doesnt even sell/import HID kits anymore. So dont count on a warranty. They were "killed off" by NHTSA more than a year ago when they made an inquiry. Along with Catz and K2, they all stopped importing kits to the US because NHTSA threatened action.
Buyer beware.
mbanks21 06-22-2004, 08:15 PM I think the only guys importing kits are Philips and Osram
JT///M3 06-24-2004, 12:07 PM I think this GB is dead....hahahha...sorry fellas. Even I don't have faith in these things anymore to buy them anymore...
