my 93 325is clearcoat is peeling on the roof. there are two spots about the size of a a nickel a little behind the sunroof, i'll post pics later. is there anything is can do to prevent the problem from spreading besides painting the roof?

Im pretty sure that if the spots are spreading because of a rock chip or something of the sort, that you can wet sand that area (and around an inch or so out on each side) and then coat it with some more clear coat... But i'd take it to a paint shop if you want a longer lasting fix.

If its peeling, it's too late. You've got clearcoat failure (basically the clear's not bonding to the underlying paint layer anymore). It's going to get worse. The only solution is to sand off all the clear and respray.

About 4 years ago, I noticed "fading" on my Bright Red '96 BMW 328 over each taillight and under the CHMSL. There was also a small spot on the hood, in front of the driver.

The faded areas turned white. That was due to water getting under the clear coat.

I took it to a dealer. He noticed I had over 60K miles on the car, and just told me the car was out of warranty. He checked with the regional rep, and I was told it must be due to sunlight and they could do nothing.

Now, there is almost no clear coat on any "top" surface. I cannot dry the car with a towel because the clear coat keeps coming off and the flakes stick to the windows.

I've been told it was due to improper preparation before clear coating the car. They probably painted it on Friday and came back on Monday to spray the clear - without sanding. It will cost me around $850 to repaint the car.

I'm thinkin' about sanding or pressure-washing the clear coat off, masking or removing any trim, then have the car painted and clearcoated. That should drop the price to $500 or less, don't you think?

Anybody get BMW to do this repair? I'm holding out.

I had a nasty gouge from a hand car wash on my roof at the leading edge.
The goofball apparently had left his ring on to remove a large bird dropping.
I was the fool for thinking I could just let them do it rather than clean it off myself gefore going.
Was I wrong.
Have never allowed ANYONE to wash my car since.

So I had that part of the roof painted and they do what is called a blend.
I cannot tell the difference front to back of roof.
Stellar job.
Trick is to find a competent shop.

I was going to post on the same topic, except mine was of my own doing! My car was parked near a construction site and some some dust and specks of something got all over my car. I went through a touchless wash, and a lot came off... so I went home and took out my power washer... (y'all see where this is going right?)... by the time I stopped I had 3 4" spots on my roof of stripped clear coat...

Not really worth a partial paint on an 86es (which looks good from 10'). Guess I'll just suck it up until I decide that I'm never going to sell it and cough up the dough for a top end paint job!

Just crestfallen, that is all.
