View Full Version : Service Question
fattrapper 05-28-2004, 05:28 PM When I start my car, the words oil service come up with a negative number. I brought my car in today and had the oil service done. The dealer therefore reset my service indicator and it now shows 15,500 miles and the words inspection. If my math is correct, this means I will be going close to 30,000 miles before my Inspection 1 service.
Is this correct because I've read many theads stating that members have had their Inspection 1 service done at 15,000 or so miles.
Kevlar 05-28-2004, 10:02 PM It adjusts based on your driving habits.
FUN2DRV 05-28-2004, 11:31 PM You change the oil every 15K miles. Every other one, or every 30K is the inspection I and every 60K is the inspection II.

Oil service is due at 12-15K. Inspection I is at 24-30K.
coolJ 06-04-2004, 12:36 AM the numbers count down from a "+" value. When you've passed 0, a "-" number will appear which means you are that many miles past due for that particular service
cowboy bebop 06-04-2004, 01:22 AM and if you go too far into the Negative they will not do the service for free, but rather make you pay for it!

Proof????
The miles between services depends on how much gas you burn. I have seen reports that cold starts also count against miles between service.
The car starts at 15,525 miles between services, and that number counts down as you drive. If you drive pretty sedately, you can actually go more than 15K miles between services. If you drive hard, you can get much less. Most people with pretty normal driving habits seem to go about 11,000 - 13,000 miles between services.
The person I know of with the craziest drivng habits managed to get Inspection 2 done under the 3year/36,000 mile maintenance agreement. This is NOT normal.
airbish 09-15-2006, 08:52 PM I have a 2004 M3 SMG Cab
Today while I was having a catback put on (Borla Mid-pipe / Rogue El Diablo Exhaust) I had my oil changed with ~3500 miles left on the service indicator. I did it at a very reputable BMW performance shop but for SOME UNGODKNOWN reason they reset the service indicator! They knew better...in fact the lead tech and I had talked about the importance of "between BMW service" oil changes with this vehicle and that the service indicator should not be reset when it's done.
The 'INSPECTION' light also came on...which wasn't on before I dropped it off yesterday. The car has 31,800 miles on it.
Someone in this thread said if you go too negative (which I didn't even know was possible) then BMWNA won't pay for the service.
I won't have to pay for this Inspection I now, will I? What is BMW going to say about this?
Thanks!

31,800 miles and you haven't hit Inspection I yet? That doesn't sound right. You should be going in for Inspection II the next time. But you may not get your scheduled oil change (as you have your counter reset) for free under free maintenance. Hopefully you have a good relation with the dealer and might be able to get the free oil change (the one which was supposed to come in 3500 miles).
You will get the inspection II for free if still under free maintenance then.
airbish 09-16-2006, 02:51 PM I just pulled the service history I got from the dealer and did a lookup on the codes. It does show that the iI was done at 22K, which seems early to me but at least it got done.
So I guess I just have to reset the Inspection light and figure out a way to get BMW to pay for the next oil change. Worst case is that I eat the next oil change. I plan on doing the rest of the interim changes myself anyway.
Thanks!
