I was wondering if anyone can tell me the size of the factory rear speakers. All I know is that they are Nokia speakers. What size speakers are good replacements that I don't have to do any custom installing to it. Also any suggestions of speakers that aren't too expensive will help as well,
Thanks

Pretty sure it's a "4T" which is a european 4" speaker... I'm actually looking for the same information for my 97 E36 which I'm pretty sure is the same speakers. Does anybody know the speaker mount diameter in mm?

Eack speaker module in the rear of the E36s contains a 4" mid and a .75" tweeter. You can replace these with a wide range of coaxial speakers which can just be wired in and utilize the crossovers in the stock amp.
Mounting can be a bit challenging. If you try to mount them up from in the trunk, you'd need to fabricate or buy some type of adaptor because of the irregular shape of the deck. If you try to drop the speakers in from the car yopu may need to enlarge the mounting hole slightly and mount the speaker on a board of some sort.

Crutchfield is the one who recommends the "4T" size for the E36 rear deck. Personally I found all 4" speakers (whether components or coaxials) very disappointing compared to the 5 1/8" components I installed up front.
Also keep in mind that if all you're going to do is replace the speakers and power them with the stock amp and built-in crossovers, your replacement speakers cannot require more than about 13-15 W per channel. If they do you will need an aftermarket amp to drive them.

Just got some JBL 4T from crutchfield and the mount holes didn't reach the ones in the plastic box. Not sure about magnet diameter but if you can't screw them in then what can ya do.
