Hey guys I just purchased a 2001 M3 and I need to get it smogged to change the title. I took it to three different independant places today and each said there was a software issue and that they could not read the obd2 port. I have an appointment on tuesday with DMV to register it and I could use your help. Could anyone please provide the address and location of a SMOG place where you have sucessfuly taken your e46 M3 to be smogged at in the SF Bay Area. Thanks in advance.

if there's an issue with the software for reading obd2 port, and you've taken it to 3 different places, then make an appointment right now with the dealer, tell them your car's not passing smog, and explain the situation to them.
If your car's out of the 4 year/50k warranty, it should be still covered under the 7 years/70k California emissions warranty, and the obd2 port should be considered an emission item. They have to fix your car for free to make it pass smog whether it be to do a tune-up, reflash ecu, or whatever is emissions testing related.
We had the same problem with an 01 cabrio we were smogging, they coudlnt read the obd 2 port, so we took it to the dealer under warranty and they said it's ok, so we told them, ok get it smogged, they got it smogged and ready for us the next day.

Thanks for the response!
Actually, after the 4th try this weekend, I was able to get it smogged. There was nothing wrong with the car, I guess I was just going to the wrong smog place. I found a spot in Sunnyvale/Santa Clara that was able to run the car.
I called the dealer - they wanted 140+ for the smog check, and I had to make an appointment for it - lord knows how long that takes.
So, $88 later and I have it smogged. And I just got back from the DMV to pay taxes on the car - ouch that hurts!

Alright cool, glad to know it wasn't the car, that's strange though. Was this smog station a referee station by any chance?
