View Full Version : What do you guys suggest?
NoSoup4U 05-21-2004, 11:05 AM Now that I am about to get rid of the E36 ... I've been thinking of buying some racing seats for the E46. I would get fixed back seats. Now, to stay in ASP, I CANNOT remove the rear seats .... b/c there is no way in hell I want to be in SM with John D. or even Glenn at times, not this year, probably not for a while.
If I get fixed back seats -- problem is, I can't really use stock seat belts. Now, this poses a problem as you guys know. I was thinking of getting a roll bar, bolt-in from kirk racing. However, will this negate all of the weight savings of the seat? Most likely -- the bar adds 50 lbs. Will I receive any additional benefit from having a roll bar? Will it hurt me?
Will it be better for me to just keep the stock seats and purchase schroth ralleye-4 clip-ins? Or, can I get aftermarket seats and use them on the street with schroth's?
What would you guys do?

I would go with the ralley 4 belts. Do you feel that the seats (stock) are not supportive enough? Even with my non-sport seats, once I do the seat belt lock trick I'm fine. I don't move around at all.
Your car is crazy fast with streets now. I would get used to it first and then think about mods.
Pete
Honestly James, those sport seats in your M3 are pretty grippy-felt grippier than Vaders or the sport seats in my car.
Why not try cinching your belt (scoot your seat back-yank the belt to lock it and scoot it back up while locked at full tension to hold you in better) before the run or just go with the 4-point? Pete has the standard seats and cinches his belt and it works well for him.
NoSoup4U 05-21-2004, 11:18 AM Thanks -- I've done that :buttrock ... but, even with width-adjustable lumbar, I still slide a bit in the seat. Plus, I am thinking more of track days as well. I will take the car to Summit, VIR, Beaverun, and I think rollbar protection is something needed -- even if I am not an advanced student ....
This car will be an all-around track/auto-x car for now until I decide what to do about another car, e.g., been contemplating this one:

Wow, that's just like Andy's Honda! :D

you can use the stock belts with aftermarket seats. that's what i currently use,
although i did need to get e30 seat belt receptacles from bill.

Sweet, if you get this you will be able to run yet another new car. How many will this be for 6 months? I lost count... :(

I would like to know too. However, I am not doing it for racing. I just want to impress my coworkers in an attempt to make them like me more.
:)
magnetic1 05-21-2004, 01:41 PM If you want, you can try a CG Lock first. Hit me up at the next event.. or we can meet somewhere.

Yeah, that John D. even scares me... :help
The way things have gone in the last 2 local SCCA events, you'd be better off in either SM2 or ASP, since SM has been faster than either of those.
But if PAX standings matter at all to you, go ahead and run SM. It's got a much better PAX than ASP does. I'm not sure what they were thinking, putting an SM-legal car like the E46 M3 into ASP...
James,
Why would you want a ricemobile like an NSX? I'd sooner have an E36 318is over that.
BMW!!!!!!
:D

Let me guess, you consider it a, "RICEY Honda" too.
Yup.
S2000, Teg Type R, RSX Type S, NSX = Honda = Rice.
318is, 320i, 316td, 528e, 524td, X5 = BMW = Race.
Very simple equation, really.
Ahhhhhhhhhhhh! It's good to own a BMW! RICH!

What makes my car rice? The only thing i have done to it is an exhaust. Is it that bad?? :dunno
:buttrock

Oh Eric. I'm sorry. I meant E36 318is.

It's that ricey mod behind the wheel.
Don't think we don't about your Kanga hat and Teck shirt, tilted to one side driving around and revving.
:D

An exhaust should not have a Folgers label on it.

megatron 05-21-2004, 03:46 PM get mounts from speedware. they let you use the stock receptacle, pyrotechnics and all.

megatron 05-21-2004, 03:49 PM oh also, the stock seats are like lead. it's hard to lift them out of the car. you'll save so much weight going to a race bucket that it you'll wonder why you didn't do it sooner. think 3 digit weight savings...

Yeah, I have power sport seats in my car, I remember reading on the Rogue Engineering site they are like 75lbs each or something like that.
NoSoup4U 05-21-2004, 05:21 PM really ... 3 digit savings? I was thinking maybe 50 lbs would be saved ...
But, that would be negated with the roll bar ... hmm ... choices. I think I will do what Pete says, schroth clip ins and race seats.
FCUK YEAH! :buttrock

megatron 05-22-2004, 06:16 AM really ... 3 digit savings? I was thinking maybe 50 lbs would be saved ...
yes, 3 digits if you do both sides. my co-driver tried picking one of the stock vaders up from the floor and honestly thought it was bolted down until i told him to try harder. they're seriously that heavy. i can't imagine an e46 seat weighs any less.
take the back seats out and that's another 40-50 or so out. it takes about 10 minutes to drop in and out if you're half drunk. 5 if you're trying.
the seats and the battery are where most of the weight in the e36 can be saved cheaply and easily.

you must be kidding.....muffin tops......what do they do with the bottoms? i love Sienfeld
by the way - whats with the Princess Bride quote?
vjlax18 05-22-2004, 11:05 AM James, I can get you the same seats I have for $500, maybe less. ;)
I picked up a set of custom made DMG brackets and I'm using my stock seat belts, and until I messed up the one, the air bag light did not come on. I have to get it reset on mine soon. Maybe someone at the Tour will have the reset tool.
Oh, and btw the seats I have weigh <15lbs each. :D
jterp 05-24-2004, 11:09 AM I'm so out of the loop.
James is this the same E46 M3 that you had at summit that time ? The silver SMG? Or is this a different one?
NoSoup4U 05-24-2004, 11:33 AM It's a different one jterp.
I like your seats John ... but, I am going to buy similar ones that I have in the E36. I like the wrap-around head restraint portion for the track. We'll see how the next week goes ...
