I'm in the process of building up a '93 325is for ITS. As I prep and chassis, I am buying up the other bits and pieces needed. I'm now looking at the air filter assembly. Seems like the Conforti is fav amoung the turner websites. Any recommendations on other options that can be backup up with dyno or at least seat of the pants comparisions?

I tried a search but got way too many hits from people just listing mods.

Thanks!
Jeff

I have to assume that all the CAIs are the same. My car had the Dinan when I bought it, but didn't care for the placement behind the fog lamp (hot air 6 inches off the track and possibility of water getting in). I went to Conforti, but I can't comment on the gain/loss because I did other stuff at the same time.

Check out Bimmerworld's E36 Race intake. I understand its one of the better ones for the $

I don't believe you can run a CAI in ITS. I am not positive, but I think you have to use the stock airbox, and you can stuff your own filter into it.

Nope the intake is open on ITS cars. You can run an kind of filter or intake you want as long as it is in the stock location and does not feature any kind of special, nonfactory opening or ducting to make it a CAI. The Conforti, ECIS, BimmerWorld intakes are all legal in ITS. I used the Conforti at the 2002 ARRC and it was legal. This past year I used the BimmerWorld intake in the 2003 ARRC and it was legal too.

Close, but not quite.

Air intake source shall be within the confines of the engine compartment or the stock location.

You can place the intake source anywhere within the engine compartment. The intake tract is otherwise free before the air flow meter. If a car's stock intake source is in the fender, such as my 944, a CAI sourcing the air from there is quite legal. :)

Yup that is actually what I was saying. Outsourcing fresh air in the stock location is fine as long as you don't modify anything to give it a direct air source, i.e. taking out headlight on E36 or cutting fender on 944.

Thanks Seth. So did you think the Conforti and Bimmerworld were on par?

One other thing I saw listed on the Bimmerworld site. It mentioned that the '95 M3 LW had no hood insulation (and therefore a different kit). Would this be the one to use then since we are allowed to pull the insulation?

The best one was the BimmerWorld CAI. They put some tricks that are fully ITS legal into the intake and it works a lot better than the Conforti. That is the one I would get. If you go with the Conforti then yes you would want the one for the LTW. Best thing you can do is call James and talk to him about the intakes. Also talk to him about what all parts you will need for your ITS car. He knows this info better than anyone out there.

Yes.
