View Full Version : First day at the track with the M3
DSrugis 05-16-2004, 09:04 PM Just wanted to share my good news from my day at the track. It was a perfect day with 55 degrees in the morning with a high of high 60s. I have a 99 E36 M3 with 39,000 miles. I have been to the track before but never with the M3 so I was curious as to what I would run. The only performance modification that I have is a custom built CAI ($20.) Anyways, here is my best run of the day:
60ft - 2.042
1/4 - 13.560
1/4 mph - 103.08
I usually set my expectations low so I was hoping for a 14.4 or better and every run except one (first round of bracket racing got hung up on the shift gate into 3rd) was in the 13s. So anyways, I was quite happy and I will hopefully have pictures and time slips scanned shortly.

DSrugis 05-16-2004, 09:24 PM What proof would you like to see? Time slips? Pictures? Witnesses? I got them. You really don't have to believe me but that is what the track was reading so all I can do is believe the slips.

i'll be the second
m3racer36 05-16-2004, 09:35 PM that trap is pretty high for a e36 m3 with a intake and that et is insanely fast for that 60 ft.
DSrugis 05-16-2004, 10:59 PM Believe me, I was very surprised by the times also. I can get scans of the slips but I also plan on hitting up another track to see how my times compare there. I guess we will see then but until then, this is what I have to go by.

LittleBlueBMW 05-16-2004, 11:12 PM Dave isn't foolin
GEN3RIC 05-16-2004, 11:24 PM If the track conditions are EXCELLENT and there is ample traction compound, (allowing you to launch much higher and actually hook up..) you can get those kinds of 60 foots and thats probably where your trap speed came from.

Hey, I was watching that event today and these are great numbers! :buttrock
He ran between 13.51 and 14.00 about 8 times, He ran over 14 sec only one time because of the missed shift which happens to best drivers.
Also you get better numbers when there is an opponent, for instance he Killed a very mean looking LS1 Pontiac and I think that was his best time.
Dave, you may need to get some Dyno charts for your car!
Black328iS 05-16-2004, 11:48 PM man those numbers are pretty damn impressive. definitely go to some other tracks and tell us what you run there...thats the best quarter mile time i think ive ever seen on such a near-stock e36 M3.

Actually most of the time 0n an N/A car it works opposite...if you have a quicker 60ft then your traps will be a little lower. But the Et will be quicker
Good run...post the whole time slip #'s when you get a chance :)
-Z-Jay-Z- 05-17-2004, 01:18 AM Were other cars running better than could be expected times as well? Just curious.

m3racer36 05-17-2004, 09:30 AM thank you bass master. I think you should go run somewhere else because a 2.0 60 ft time should not yield a 13.5 in a stock e36.
OT bassmaster I met you once on capitol about two years ago when you had the turbo miata. I was driving a stock hellrot m3 and was with todd who drives a white 2nd gen dsm. It sucks you got rid of it but I guess its time for a faster project now. :devillook
nicom3 05-17-2004, 09:39 AM Damn that is a good ass time, def post up your slips
ASCH MAN 05-17-2004, 09:44 AM Are you sure your car is stock other than the CAI? Are you the first owner? That time is about .4 seconds faster than most other stock M3's. Nice time though.

That time is pretty quick for a stock M3...that didnt 60ft exceptionally well. It seems like its making more power than the norm?

Yep thats me ...still miss the miata..The M3 will be faster but probably not as fun..should have it up and running in the next 3 weeks.
SilverStreak 05-17-2004, 09:50 AM This isn't really a Kill Story, so I'm gonna move this to the Track Forum. But that being said, you guys need to lighten up on the BS crap. We've had other E36 M3's with very little bolt ons running mid-13's before, this is nothing new.
Given his traps and his 60' times, the 13.5 ET is extremely do-able. Good job, Dave.
jmott 05-17-2004, 10:00 AM low on gas, spare tire removed?
I can completely believe it-my friend with a 98 M3 with intake and exhaust pulled a 13.8 his very first time at the strip (he roadraces and autoxes) and he didn't get a 2.0 0-60' to get it.
Good job, DSrugis!
tasmisr 05-17-2004, 03:11 PM low on gas, spare tire removed?
yes, he had the full spare removed, the gas tank was almost empty, Dave himslef is not adding much wieght to the car.
jmott 05-17-2004, 03:27 PM yes, he had the full spare removed, the gas tank was almost empty, Dave himslef is not adding much wieght to the car.
k, then I believe it =)
m3racer36 05-17-2004, 04:06 PM yeh I def miss my turbo m3 also
Fissionx 05-17-2004, 11:04 PM i miss my turbo 328
DSrugis 05-18-2004, 07:48 AM Wow, lots of replys...
As Tamer said, I had the spare removed and about 1/4-1/8th tank of gas. I also am a light weight myself. I also did something that most others don't (I did it with my civic and it resulted in much better times.) I run quite high pressure. A lot of people run low pressure to get a good launch but they gain tire resistance and tire size. I was running 39PSI cold and about 42 hot. The launches were a little more difficult but I was happy with the 2.042 60 foot with those pressures. I also try to shift like a mofo:) Alright, here are the top 6 time slips. Let me know if you have any other questions.
I am car 222 btw.
Dave
DSrugis 05-18-2004, 07:56 AM Also, other cars were running as expected. I ran against a modded firebird and beat him. He was running mid 13s. There was a C4 vette running low to mid 14s. 302 mustang running low 14s...so overall, most cars were running as expected.
Dave
Turbo Charg Dynam 05-18-2004, 09:22 AM Great times! You must have a "magic motor" because your engine is putting down 20-30 more rwhp than the average near stock e36 M3.
Todd
Bassmaster 05-18-2004, 10:00 AM Great times!!!......84mph in the 1/8th is pretty fast I would expect the car to have most of the N/A power bolt ons and cams to achieve theses #'s?
DSrugis 05-18-2004, 07:05 PM I bought the car used...I am the 3rd owner but I doubt the prior owner did anything to the car. She was a female in her 40s who bought it cause she liked not having to dip into the throttle to pass. I don't know who the first owner is but the car is "stock" as far as I know.
Dave
clumpymold 05-18-2004, 08:01 PM Wow, awesome times. You should really get your car dynoed. So all you have on your car is a CAI? What size? Nothing else? What else did you remove from your car? How much do you weigh (if you don't mind me asking)? Those are some very impressive numbers for a "stock" M3.
Also, what car did you race in that top right run? The one that had an 11.666 1/4 mile? Dayam!
DSrugis 05-18-2004, 11:44 PM Answers to your questions Clumpy:
The CAI is a 3" single pipe. I managed to build it in one piece using a JC Whitney U bend pipe. See attached pictures
The only thing I removed from my car was the spare tire. Everything else was left in the car
I weight just under 140...and yes I am a male but I am an avid cyclist so I keep the pounds off.
Like I said before, I think my tire pressure was a big factor in my runs also.
The 11 second car was a built 80s camaro. There were definitely some other cool cars at the track a lot of sub 12 second cars. There was a low 11 second Harley which was just awesome. My friend was taking pictures with his 35mm camera so once he gets the film developed I will try to scan some pictures in.

I see. Very nice run indeed. But you DID remove more than just your spare tire, if those pictures are your engine during that run. I see an engine cover screw and a passenger side front strut cover. That's about 2-3 oz. I'd say. Lol. :biglaughb
Oh, and you've got a pretty empty windshield washer bottle. ;)
When you get the chance, you should dyno your car and post the results. I'm VERY curious as to what it'll be.
