2001 VW GTi VR6 2.8

200hp 6 cylinder front wheel drive LSD with borla exhaust.

vs.

1995 BMW 325is with Dinan chip, BFP intake, M3 exhaust with a supersprint muffler, bald tires, bad driver.

VW = 0 BMW = 1

Ah the look on a teenagers face when you beat his brand new car with your underpowered, old age, high-milage e36.

The end.

Those things dyno an adverage of 150hp stock...
Sorry, not 200hp :(

They have a really nice curve though.. :)

The VW had the displacement advatange, and VR6s are no slouches. My boss had one, and would compare it to his E36 328i. Good Kill.

His friends got the 1.8 turbo. Might come back with a loss on that one.

Good kill, the 1.8t's are a little faster.

lol, just ALITTLE... :D

How much did you beat the jetta/golf by?
Good kill, those guys with Vr6s think they're so fast...

Good kill, the 1.8t's are a little faster.

1.8T's have 180hp/? torque, but chipped they have around 210 hp and 250 torque.

So that's slower than the advertised 200 hp for the VR6, even if it dynos at 150 due to fwd.

Okay okay, so I'm in a small town and hang with a small group of friends. Mostly imports around here, I'm the only BMW in the group, the only german car in fact. And I'm pretty proud that the car is paid for by ME. At 19 I'm paying for my car.

So our friend's Audi A4 paid for by his mommy gets stolen, and he uses the insurance to make a downpayment on the GTi VR6. And he thinks he's toop dog. Which pisses me off cause he doesn't apprieciate the car at all no matter what it is because his parents are the ones paying for it. Anyway, thats the way the rivalry started right there.

So first thing he does is goes and puts on a Borla muffler which sounds like ass and backfires constantly and he says it sounds better than my M3 catback with a supersprint (anyone who has this knows, it sounds SICK.) So I tell him lets just prove this in a race. He stalls for like 2 weeks and I finally corner him into racing me last night.

We pull up on an empty industrial road and launch, I launch at 2500 (I have crappy tires), it bogs and I'm still already beating him, I decide to take it easy and shift at 6000 thru the gears, still beating him, pulling away in 2nd, pulling harder in 3rd as we get to 1/5 mile and I let off. I was about a half car ahead of him. So he pulls up next to me and says he was shifting under his redline and wants to try again.

I've never counted a single race as a legitimate win, there's too many factors that could arise that can make a person win or lose randomly. So I accept.

We launch again, this time I launch at 3200 and connect real good, use a little double clutching to get traction and this time I shift 7000 thru my gears (I have the chip it goes to 7). He gets a lot better launch this time so he's closer thru 1st, I pull hard at the top of 1st, he gains a little until he shifts into his 2nd like a noobie, I pull hard again in 3rd and at that point I'm about half a car ahead of him again and let off before the stop sign. He doesn't notice the stop sign and damn near jumps accross an intersection. He whines a little when I meet up with him but then he gives a little respect too.

After that he wants to use a different driver for his car, so we line up, launch, he stalls. We line up, launch again, he just lays smoke for 1st gear, no clutch shifts thru his gears and loses by like a car and a half.

After that it's about settled that he lost and never will win with his setup.

Now he tell me he's gonna put in some honda chrome intake and maybe a chip and race me again, this time maybe I'll take out the spare tire and the 2 12" subs in the back. Maybe lose the passenger seat too, and backseats. and maybe race with the windows up... :)

I really doubt it has 200 to the crank.
VW claimed more Hp because that is the "all mighty vr6"

1.8ts put out more Hp then a Vr6 even though the advertised crank hp is lower. :shifty
I guess to try to fool people into buying a Vr6 because "it has the most Hp".

Yeah, it probably is a case of misleading people with HP numbers (can you say RX8?)

If you want to do anything to your ride, you're going with the 1.8T.

i went at it with my buddy in a 1.8t gti. we were pretty much even till we hit triple digits then i started to pull away from him. we had to shortly shut it down though because of traffic. btw i also had 3 people in my car. he had none.

The 1.8T has a front mount intercooler and I'm sure something else.

Those numbers are crank hp and the numbers on the graph are WHEEL hp. so he was right. i just don't want you thinking that a vr6 has only 150 something hp. :D so it doesn't matter if you think that the whp are low for the vr6 but the fact remains the same the're rated 200hp at the crank. just my .02

Anyone got a dyno of a stock 325is?

And I know the 1.8T has turbo. Thats what a front mount intercoolers for, I was speaking of aftermarket parts he has on the car.

You said "use a little double clutching to get traction".... I have a bit of track time ( but only a little drag experiance) and I don't understand or see the benefit of double clutching in a drag race....... I would think that would only slow you down.... considerably. Traditionaly, I thought double clutching was to try to help cars w/o syncromesh.... I could be wrong here?

My E46 M3 puts down around 280+rwhp and I bang through the gears and get a small scratch in the 1-2 change and a chirp on the 2-3 change......depending on street/tire conditions.

I am having trouble understanding because it isn't like your car is a 600 rwhp monster that struggles to gain traction in any gear... I am sure you can chirp your tires on the 1-2 shift, but your car's power seems hardly enough to send your car sideways.

Others on this board know much better than I but, my best launches have come with me holding the engine at around 3500 rpm and quickly letting the clutch out **not just dropping it** and while I let the clutch out, I hold the throttle steady..... the rear will break loose but only for a second or so and... as I start to see that the rear tires are catching up, I mash the gas ..... When I get to near redline, and as fast as I can move my feet/hands, I breifly lift the throttle, clutchin, shift 1-2, clutch out, mash the gas ......

anyway, for what it's worth.

I think you can find one in the E36 forum :)
they dyno at 160hp or pretty close to it.

Agree with Longhorn, never just drop the clutch, not the best launch for forward momentum, and not real good on the driveline, either...

Just wanna set a few things strait...
There are a few different VR6 engines that VW offers in their cars.
12valve 2.8L VR6 - about 174hp @ the crank
24valve 2.8L VR6 - about 200hp @ the crank(I'm 90% sure this wasn't offered on the 2001 GTis)
24valve 3.2L VR6 - about 240hp @ the crank(only currently offered on the Golf R32)

So this kid might have been a little missinformed as to how much power his car had. Plus it sounds like the kid is an ass and a shitty driver. Also, the newer GTis weigh a few hundred pounds more than the previous generations. So had it been a Mk3 VR6 with a competent driver, I think the VW would win.

The VR6 is faster than the 1.8T.

And VR6's do make 200 bhp at the crank. that was the point.

sorry, 2001 vr6's have 174 bhp, not 200, 2003's and up have 200. the 180 bhp as opposed to 150 bhp 1.8, would be faster (more power, less weight).
