View Full Version : Z3 2.8 vs. Eagle Talon TSi AWD - highway pulls

Ok I'm changing my no-win policy to a Ťone race per dayť policy.

Coming back home, stuck in traffic before getting on the highway, I see an Eagle Talon GSi (previous gen, AWD, turbo I guess) merge agressively behind me...
:devillook

The minute I hit the highway, there's way too much traffic to play, but he tailgates me, so I floor it and leave him behind. He didn't try, but has now caught up.

I see an opening and get in there, and sure enough he follows suit. I can't pull from him, but he doesn't gain either. Again, traffic slows us down.

I steer clear of traffic better than him, but again, I let him catch up, then accelerate, and I manage to halt his momentum. He passes me, gives me the look, and continues. At this stage, I don't know if he's a cool guy or a moron.

I manage to get behind him just as I know that traffic is gonna clear up. Mind you, this has been going on for a few miles at this point. :) Real good fun. I get behind him, see a puff of black smoke as his car squats, I punch it... we both stay even. I *might* have gained a couple of inches by the time I was in mid 4th, but since he started to brake (traffic again  ) just after, it could've been because he let off, I dunno.

I see him gesture a very enthusiastic thumbs up. :) Ahhh... he's cool. I get next to him, we exchange smiles and waves, this is my exit... meh, let's keep going! :D

I rev match in 3rd (75 or so) and wait for him to do the same (no low blows from me), and again, it's on!!! I see his front end rise... and again, dead even! Wow, this is cool! He brakes due to traffic (damn!), I wait for him, I see him approach, his window down, and we start talking, side-by-side, 75 mph, on the highway :laugh :
- (him) Are you modded?
- Yeah, intake, chip...
- Wow!
- Are you?
- Nope, this is bone stock!
- Great, quick car man, congrats!
- Hey thank you man!

And on that, we go again, same result or so, I may have gained 3 inches, and then I really had to take an exit, so... I lowre my window, extend my arm, and wave at my 5 minute friend. He reciprocates in kind.
:buttrock

Granted, these were short runs, but overall, we were pretty evenly matched, fun times!

How fast are these cars stock?

Nice runs with the DSM's. Specs on the Tsi are:

TSi/TSi AWD
Engine Type 2.0 litre, DOHC 16-valve I-4 cylinder 2.0 litre turbocharged with air-to-air intercooler.
Torque, net lb-ft @ rpm 130 @ 4800 214 @ 3000 (220 with automatic transmission).

0-60mph in about 6.6 sec's.
Not too shabby for a stock car. My guess is that the guy that ran with you only had a boost controller and possibly ecu re-flash. These cars are highly modifiable and have the potential to make 11 sec 1/4 mile passes
DSM's ain't no joke.

something's also telling me he's modded (although only slightly). completely stock, i can hang with (and in excess of 5000rpm in any gear, pull on) my friends 1G plymouth laser (same car, different name). he has intake, and an IC sprayer, as far as mods are concerned.

sounds like a good time - i too will drive beyond exits in order to dance with other quick cars... :D

Oh, he probably was stock... FI cars at highways speeds... sound about right. Cool!

Nice runs!

FI AWD stock DSM cars at highway speeds, not so good. I liked the Eclipse GS-T (fwd) I drove a lot. It seemed really quick at highway speeds. I drove an Eagle TSi FWD, it seemed slower. :dunno

One a day huh? :shifty

I don't think his car was stock either, once the turbo spools, they're good at any speed. Just opening up the intake, exhaust and a boost controller puts them in the M3 territory. Good job.

Since you're a professional street racer now I guess it's time to finish that secret project... :devillook

....that manifold you've been posting about for the past year. Do it already!:evil2

Why do you guys keep saying it wasn't stock? It's not like my car is a rocket, remember? :az:

Good stuff, Hugo. Sounds like he was cool, too. Sounds like he was OEM vs your 2.8. Nice run, man!

Race per day, huh...? Now that the ZHP is broken in, I'll have to scare up some Kills fodder for this place, too.... :D

What?

You make it seem that to keep up with me, he HAD to be modded. I don't think so.

I've driven the TSI AWD, nice fast car. He wouldn't need to be modified to keep up. With a good driver he'd likely be faster than a stock(ish) 2.8. If he was modded at all he'd have an exhaust (turbo's love a decent exhauust and down pipe) and you'd know it.

See Hugo, you don't need brakes, you need to install those cams and that manifold!

Oh, he does, but he needs $$$ to go to Disney with his family, to fix the shed, to fix the gutters, to redo the kitchen, the living room, the kids' bathroom, the driveway... so Hugo will stay NA. For quite a while at that... :(

Because stock, they're 15 second cars, I think you're a little faster than that.

Maybe they suck down low, but at 75 mph, he was just fine.

??? I don't consider your car fast. ;) I would think the AWD would be about the same quickness as your car, or maybe a little faster. Of course, it is getting old and probably due for some work. The FWD would likey take you for a walk on the highway.

Probably a good chance his car wasn't stock ... DSM have "free" mods as we call it. Little things that you can do to get a little more HP and still look BONE stock. Furthermore, the word STOCK is a little too freely thrown around in the DSM world ... "Yeh it's stock all except for the exhaust, and the bigger side mount, ... ", you get what I'm saying. And, like someone said above, a bone stock DSM is a dog on crutches on the street, and let's not even talk about the highway runs for a bone stock AWD :nono

Hugo-

Forget all that manifold/cam stuff and find a nice plaintiff where your recovery will yield you this http://www.racetunedimports.com/bmw_turbocharger.php
Don't compromise :nono

This is definitely a DIY job (whicih I know you are accustomed to). I'll even chip in for a manual boost controller when you get it so we can get you closer to 400bhp :D
