Theres a guy at my work that has a 2001 Contour SVT and he wants to race me, I think he will smoke me since I have an automatic with no mods yet. Do you think I could beat him if I get the usual chip, intake, exhaust??

The last time I was at the track, there was a guy that was posting about 1 sec faster in the 1/4 mile than my 93 325is 5sp with 3.91 diff and intake/exhaust. I think he had an automatic too.

dude...you cant look stupid in that car...(it looks good :) )

you may try some g-tech runs and then compare them to published svt contour stats in magazines and see if your close...

Is your's a 328is? If so, I think you'd beat him, or atleast stay with him, even with the auto. I'd blow a SVT Contour off the road with my 328is, it's a 5 speed and not stock, but still I think you'd have a chance. Anyways who cares, run him and just find out what your car can do! GOod luck!

Actually its a 325is. I am gonna order the AA exhaust and chip and ECIS intake next week so I will give him a shot next week sometime!!

Hmmm... Maybe the one at the track was modded, but it looked and sounded stock. I would'nt underestimate him because the one that I raced was quick. I also raced a 99 328i 5sp and beat him. Neither of us could touch that contour.

That thing had to be modified then, I just talked to another guy locally and he has a 328is with little mods and he said he smoked it. All he has is intake chip and exhaust. He said the driver of it wasn't very good but still. I think I'm gonna give it a shot. Wish me luck. Also what do you guys think of the Probe GTs??

To really make a difference, change your gearing. That will maximize the power of your car.
Some call it the "poor man's supercharger"!!
I did it on my 325 is, and it was awesome. The second best mod was the underdrive pulley.
It gave it that M feel.
Good luck!

I also changed the gearing. It was by far the best bang for the buck. Improvement in acceleration is incredible, but it revs kinda high on the freeway. I'm at 3700rpms at 70mph.

Whats it cost to do it?

I believe your car has a diff ratio of 3.15 which is the same as mine. The automatic 325's have a diff ratio of 3.91. You should be able to find them at the junkyard. expect to pay about $350 for a non limited slip and about $600-800 for a limited slip diff. Going to a 3.91 ratio is kinda extreme, but it really is like adding a supercharger to the car. You'll be shifting alot sooner and more often. Most people pay $800 just for intake and exhaust and it's good for a couple tenths off the 1/4 mile. My diff knocked a full second off my 1/4 time. Thats like adding 100hp to the car.

Your question about Probe GT's, my little brother has one (95 GT) and it's a fast car. He JUST transplanted a 5 speed into it, it used to have an auto. He said the car is much faster with the manual, and drives like a totally different car, he also got a Clutchmasters clutch for NOS applications because he's runnin a 55 hp shot of NOS, he's also got cold air intake, exhaust, and NGK plugs and wires. The thing without NOS was fast before when it was an auto, now it must be a lot faster, and with NOS, well, when he still had the auto he held a 96 Z28 neck and neck to 100mph--now w/ the 5 speed he'd beat one convincingly. A stock Probe GT w/ 5 speed should run about 15.3-15.5 in the 1/4 w/ a good driver, so that should show you. Without mods, I'd say a PGT 5 speed would beat you pretty good, so get those mods! With intake/exhaust/performance plugs and wires, a Probe GT w/ 5 speed should run about 14.9 or so, with a good driver. Theres a dude that has a PGT w/ those mods and about a 70 hp shot of NOS, and he's ran a 13.8, so they can be fast!

A good friend of mine has a '99 Contour SVT (5spd). It is stock except for a stiffer engine mount (to improve shifting), Redline fluids and an intake.

Against my '98 328is (5spd), which performance-wise is bone-stock, he runs real close. My shifter is a bit notchy and my clutch pedal doesn't seem right currently so my shifts are a little slow but the factory published speed for the 328is is about .5sec faster than the SVT.

Another thing that helps me and not him is the RWD. Much better launches than Front-Drive.
