View Full Version : e46 328i v. 2003 A4 1.8T
Tavy8010 05-04-2004, 10:09 PM I have owned my 328i now for about a year and really haven't been in a 'good' race. By good i mean verse a quality car (not a ricers) and had good open road to really go head to head.
Anyways, i take my exit off the highway and see a red A4 stopped at the light ahead, i pulled up next to him in the right hand lane. I've seen his car before at this frat house that's by my friends apartment (he has a very noticable catback system). I pull up next to him at the light glance over at him and he was a guy about my age, i didn't do a stare or even make eye contact so i wasn't expecting a race.
Well, the light turns green and we both take off normal but i had this feeling like he is gonna punch, but he didn't so i shift to second. Right when i shift he hits in first and bolts about a car length ahead before i respond (his exhaust sounded great). I didn't bother down shifting i just mash the pedal but was only doing 25 mph(well below the powerband).
It didn't matter though i reeled him in like fish and i could see him clinching the steering wheel trying way to hard to get all he could out of the car. By the end of second i put a car on him and i shift hard to third. My tires chirpped goodbye to him and i take up to about 85-90 then shut it down b/c out turns were coming up.
We both take the turn with good speed and i see the next light is red (sweet!). We pull up next to each other he rolls down his window and goes "damn i shouldn't of took my chip out", i laughed and asked what else he had. I heard exhaust and i think he said intake not sure though. He asked what i had, i replied "stock" and then he asked what model, "328". He was a really cool guy with a good attitude. I don't know about yall but it always puts me in a good mood when someone is cool like that b/c you run across so many dicks on the road.
Numanoid 05-04-2004, 11:02 PM Nice kill! I've always wondered about the speed of those Audis.

wow i never knew a stock 328 can pull from a slightly modded a4 hmm good to know haha. yeah there are a bunch of sore loosers out there and there are a bunch of ass holes that just because they beat you, they get all high on their horse. good kill one more point for the 328
i could see him clinching the steering wheel trying way to hard to get all he could out of the car.
Clinching the steering wheel = 5 rwhp. :stickoutt
And the chip excuse... lame. Who chips his car only to take it out?

hc1001 05-04-2004, 11:53 PM do u consider a a4 1.8T competition? maybe the 01(180hp) model but the 97-00 is only making 150/150 i believe... with a chip its a different story... but the audis are even heavier than the VW's... anyways nice kill =) hehe i bet u liked it when u said ur car was "stock"
count_schemula 05-05-2004, 12:23 AM He raced a 2003 A4.
I had a 2002 Audi A4 1.8t for 6 months. It's hard to describe how slow that car seemed sometimes. One summer day I barely beat a Corolla with a lawn mower sticking out of the trunk. I don't even think he was racing either. That's when I knew the Audi had to go.
Heat soak and a low pressure turbo? :nono
Even with a turbo swap and chip I'm not sure that car would move out.
Quattro is world class. Audi engines are a little lacking.

Wasn't sure if it was comp. never raced one before. I don't race that much but when i have it hasn't been any good head to head races. A couple ricers from a light and some highway weaving. I don't like racing on public roads (To many unpredictable drivers). I much rather test the cars own abilities against itself and my driving rather than test it against another car. But that is just me.
I'm a broke college kid at the moment, but hopefully by the end of the summer i can't say it's 'stock' anymore :D
Vic328CSi 05-05-2004, 12:36 AM I took out my buddies '03 A4 1.8T (APR chipped) with my stock (at the time) 328Ci. It was no challenge at all, i left him clean in the dust. He tried a couple more times before admitting his loss. Its still a sweet car tho, the A4.
After i got the blower, ecu, intake, injectors installed, he's refused to even try and attempt another race. Cant say i blame him. :stickoutt
VandyS4 05-05-2004, 12:38 AM The old pre-2002 1.8t engine produced 150AWHP, not crank HP as Audi led people to believe.
Either way, the 02+ A4 1.8Ts are slow as hell. Even though the engine was tuned to put out more power, the B6 (2002+) chassis is a good deal heavier than the B5 chassis. While I've never driven a 1.8t, I hear they're depressingly slow.
They do respond well to tuners, obviously. That guy may have taken his chip out to save his turbos or if he intended on taking the car to the dealer.
Good kill against a nice car.

Thanks for the information. Ever since i got to drive a TT (225) around all day i have been an audi fan. The A4 has a v6 model right? what is that engine like?

I take my chip out before i go to dealer to get my car service...Its common sense.
BTW, Audi A4s are slow...really slow. Even with turbo upgrade and stuff it can only run low 14s...high 13s if you are lucky.
the "audi guys" like the 1.8t
the average guy likes the v6 cause it makes more power stock
in late 01 they made a few 1.8t a4 w/170hp
to make them "fast" they need a FMIC, new turbo (stock is the size of a closed fist) and stand alone EMS
VandyS4 05-05-2004, 01:29 AM Actually, pre-02 (b5) 1.8T A4s can be modified with standard kits to run around 13 seconds. With a chip, cats, DPs, FMIC, K04 and a few more minor mods, 1.8Ts can put down somewhere around 300-350hp. It's been awhile since I looked at the numbers, but they can me made to be quite quick. Hadokenny may have been referring to the newer, heavier A4s.
The V6 is a 2.8L naturally aspirated engine good for 190hp. The 2.8 engines can be supercharged to around 290hp, then modified for a bit more power. I used to own an 2.8 A4, and was pretty satisfied with it. Not as tuner friendly as the turbocharged 1.8L, but pretty resilient.
jwind 05-05-2004, 12:27 PM I had a 2000 A4 1.8TQS, GIAC chipped -- no way a stock 328 was as fast as that car. In fact, a couple chipped K03's have even run low 14's w/100oct fuel. The average chipped 5spd B5 A4 w/K03's should have performance somewhere between a 328 and a M3.
I don't know how much the B6 chassis adds to the weight, but they make even more power now and I would be surprised if a 328 would pull much, if at all, on one chipped (although, the APR chip is slightly weaker than the GIAC).
hc1001 05-05-2004, 04:01 PM LOL are u kidding? between a 328 and m3? assuming chip is the only mod...and how long u want ur turbo to last... i would say 328i-330i....
jwind 05-05-2004, 04:25 PM Well, since the performance is greater than a 328, and less than a M3, yes, I would say between a 328 and an M3, and no, I am not kidding. I was referring to the e36 models when there was no 330, but I would imagine that a GIAC chipped B5 is comparable in performance to an e46 330, again, between a 328 and an m3.
Not sure how you can take issue with that.
willmtbike4food 05-05-2004, 10:42 PM FWIW, there have been multiple VW Jetta 1.8t Wolfsburg Edition owners trapping in the 14's... stock. the best stock time so far has been 14.4.
chipping the 1.8t engine (depending on the tuner you go with) results in either massive horsepower, or massive torque, gains.
a k04 turbo upgrade is worth an easy 300hp. same deal with the gt28rs. different torque bands though.
no offense, but a chipped 1.8t beats a stock 328 anyday. i'm fairly confident i could hang with kolin's (bmw3er) e36 (OBD1) 325. intake/exhaust/chip... more? i dunno. i've driven his car though... it just doesn't seem to pull in 3rd like mine does. although, this could be related to the weather... i'm coming off a cold winter, to my advantage...
BabyM 05-05-2004, 11:01 PM Nice race! It's good that he had a good attitude!
So why is it common sense to remove the chip before taking the car in for Dealer Service? A warranty thing? I don't have one yet so it hasn't been an issue...
pheight 05-06-2004, 07:39 AM Yeh, it's a warranty thing...
IS 300_M 05-06-2004, 10:11 AM do you think dealers look on your car's ECU when servicing your car?
willmtbike4food 05-06-2004, 12:33 PM the majority of VW "chipping" is actually just reflashing... the APR and GIAC programs are 'undetectable' to a VAG-COM. the dealer would have to take the car for a spin, let it hit full boost, and take it past the rev limiter to realize its chipped.
or, just floor it in 2nd. from a 20mph roll, with nothing more than an APR chip, i've seen the 1.8t smoke the tires. no clutch drop. 2nd gear, pedal to the floor. thats torque. :D
pheight 05-06-2004, 10:24 PM do you think dealers look on your car's ECU when servicing your car?
No, obviously not... I believe it's against some sort of rules from them to look at the ECU, and just looking at the ECU wouldn't make a bit of difference since most chips are now available through direct port to reprogram the ECU, but if for some reason a test drive is done... it's OBVIOUSLY noticeable... do you not think it is better to be safe than sorry?
