View Full Version : 2000 M5 vs Heavily modified E46 M3
AzN_M5 05-04-2004, 12:53 PM Okay,
Well the beast has lost to an E46 M3. On the way back from Bimmerfest 2004 we were all coming back to Phoenix and we decided to do a few rolls on the highway. We were at 80 mph in 3rd gear for most of them.
First off, the conditions were less than satisfactory, coming back it was 104 degrees outside in the middle of the desert. So power loss was inevitable, but still we went ahead and did it anyway. I also had another passenger in my backseat with a full trunk, but the M3 has stereo equipment that should counteract my full trunk.
The owner of the E46 M3 is Jajja, another member on these boards. His LSB M3 has everything minus an intake right now. So that comes down to Evosport UDP, Eurobahn Superchip software, SS headers, SS Cats, SS X-pipe, SS exhaust, and irridium plugs as his power mods. The only thing Joe is waiting to do is install an intake and updated software.
The M5 is bone stock minus a Triflow exhaust.
We did 3 runs of 80 mph rolls in 3rd gear.
Hitting it in 3rd gear at 80 resulted in holding it together for a second and then his M3 started to gradually walk and pull almost 2 car lengths on average. The video is of the 2nd run we did. The 3rd run was by far the closest and had him only pulling about 1 car length total. The first two runs were about the same in terms of how bad he beat me. I shut it down every time at around 140. I'd explain some more, but a video is attached for you all to enjoy. Please excuse the blue racing stripes on the M5, we were joking on the way home. In fact, there is a Type-R badge on the back of the M5 also.

Enjoy!

MGregski 05-04-2004, 01:04 PM So much for the beasts highway power. Some Supersprint headers, cats and powerchip software would make it interesting though.
Nice vid Chris.

Or an even cheaper solution:
Race Gas
The E46 M3 box is optimal - I would'nt change it for a CAI (especially in AZ where it will function as a "louder hot air intake"). But if your buddy needs the "sound" he should make his own for a fraction of the price.
This tuner is pretty hot :eyecrazy:

AzN_M5 05-04-2004, 02:29 PM Well,
The E46 M3 box is not exactly optimal, I mean, look at the CSL. If you check out what some of the tuners are coming out with in the near future, it might just shock you.
GruppeM is definitely just a sound intake, but some of the others that mimic the CSL intake are certainly not.
Of course, the M5 will soon be getting modified as well. Chances are AA intake, SS Headers, straight pipes, and software are slowly going into the works. I just need to finish my M3 first before any modifying of the M5 occurs.
Kevin321 05-04-2004, 03:10 PM What have you done to the M3 so far?

Pretty much everything I guess.

Actually there is a story on the M5 board that Nowack's quality isn't up to par. But its got good power :)

I have everything in line, just haven't installed any of it yet.
Coming up will be headers, straight pipes, ltw flywheel, race clutch, intake, and software to match.
Things should get interesting in the months to come...
Chris :evil2
DasAutokerl 05-04-2004, 09:05 PM Wahaha. Joe's LSB M3 is a monster - plain and simple. I was lucky enough to ride with him from PHX to Bimmerfest and once we hit the cooler, coastal air the engine came alive (not that it wasn't already fucking sweet). :evil2

I commend you on your "straight pipes" (if you mean muffler delete by this). Mufflers are an absolute waste and all they do is make the car heavier.
You got the SMG or Manny? If it's a manny. where's the Short Shifter :buttrock

I have SMG.
I will still run a muffler as the M3 sounds horrible without one. When I say straight pipes, I mean running with just piping from the headers to the muffler.
Chris
AzN_M5 05-04-2004, 09:56 PM I forgot to mention that Joe also has 3.91 gears.
Chris
I would bet that most of his gain is the final drive. I wish someone would do a comparison of a car with just the new diff. vs. diff. and mods. Even on old //M cars like mine, you only get real results with with cams, track pipe, etc. CAI's and aftermarket exhausts do almost nothing. Although there is something to be said for better throttle response and driveability.

So you mean "cat delete" and "resonator delete." My buddies e46 M3 has the SS cat back exhaust. This was his first modification ($900-$1000 dollars IIRC). Anyway, the only diff he noticed was slight high end hp increase and more importantly it got rid of only "some" of the annoying "rattle/metallic buzz" of the stock exhaust (Resonator related I think).
I run a "muffler delete" pipe on the Evo. At idle and WOT my car sounds like a Z06 (mind you it's a 4 banger). I would love to see someone go to the local muffler shop (i.e., Midas) and have the shop cut, I know I said cut" the exhaust pipe between the cat converter and gigantor muffler and weld on some mandrel bent "straigh pipes"; thereby deleting a shite-load of weight from the car and making for a :devillook intimidating exhaust sound.
What are you gonna do about your "torque" loss (caused by the removal of the cat converter which acted as a back pressure restriction) when you do the cat delete modification?
4-BNGR
oldM3r 05-05-2004, 11:50 AM turbos generate thier own back pressure, hence the HUGE increase you get with something like a rx7 when you remove the precat and mid cats. Putting a downpipe and a midpipe on a 3rd gen rx7 give you approximately 50HP
AzN_M5 05-05-2004, 01:08 PM There's actually no power loss if you remove the cats on the E46 M3. Come to think of it, there is also no power gained, your car just becomes that much more pissed off sounding.
The headers actually do quite a bit. There's about a 10-15 hp gain, but almost a 30 ft/lbs gain in torque.
Jmweb for instance has essentially the same mods as Jajja, but instead of the SS headers he has the euro headers, but does not have the 3.91 gears. He dynos at 320 rwhp.
Chris
jajja 05-05-2004, 01:53 PM then the car hit cool 60 degree weather in santa barbara, as frenchy stated.. its sick.. it was llike nothing i ever felt... it was insane...
we shoudl have video'd that... damn... it was just insane...

Just do side exhaust then :devillook
fliplap 05-05-2004, 03:19 PM Heh, and in the background you can see my poor e36 M3 doing its best to keep up.

I think those racing stripes slowed you down...:evil2
JMWeb 05-06-2004, 03:53 AM Very nice Jajja!
Dont you love the sound of the M3 with headers :)
How do you like the 3.91? Do you feel as if you lose out in the lower gears b/c of the earlier shifts? I know it shines in the longer gears (3rd + )
DasAutokerl 05-06-2004, 08:51 AM zoom zoom zoom :evil2
He said M3, Chris. Not "mazda."
"Zoom, Zoom, Zoom... yea zoom zoom zoom." :D

i think it only makes the car a more competitive piece of engineering..
no real loss in lower gears for the added torque.. i think its a good fit..

Take it from a guy that hangs w/ friends deep in to the rice import scene. Racing stripes adds 30-40 rwhp. EASY lol. I love ricers.....they make me laugh.
