View Full Version : Dodged a HUGE Bullet on Saturday Evening.

I'm lucky I still have my license. Story goes something like this:

I was making my weekly trek from Athens to Dunwoody to see The Lady on Saturday evening and had just merged onto 85 South from 316 when a black late-model Mustang swerves from a couple of lanes over and plants himself directly on my rear end.

There were the usual morons doing 55 in the left lane, so as soon as I had room to the right, I dropped to fourth and accelerated with Mustang boy close on my heels. I came upon slower traffic and put my left blinker on to let the Mustang guy know what I was doing. He didn't seem to care, because as soon as I made my way halfway into the lane, he squeezed in between myself and another car in the HOV lane! He seriously must have come within inches of my front bumper, as I had to swerve back to the right to keep from getting my left fender ripped off!

This obviously pissed me off, as I'm more than happy to make a quick little run to illegal speeds, but only when it's safe. This guy obviously had no intention of playing fairly. So, I attatched myself to his bumper, flicking him off and flashing my lights, when he floors it. I got stuck behind some traffic, and wasn't about to risk an accident by doing some dumbass move.

Traffic cleard and I moved over three lanes, dropped it to fourth, and accelerated past the asshole, flicking him off as I passed (windows were down). I continued to accelerate to about 140, leaving the guy behind, then backed off.

I cruised at more mundane speeds for about a minute when I see a GA State Patrol coming hard in the HOV lane, doing probably about 150 or so!

I think to myself, "Please keep going, please keep going," but with no luck. As soon as he spots me, he jams the brakes and gets right in behind me. My heart drops to my stomach and I'm thinking this is it. Reckless driving, felony speeding and whatever else he wants to throw at me.

He does the usual follow without lights for about a mile then flicks on the lights. I put on the hazards, patiently move to the right, and acknowledge him with a wave out the window. I continue on for about a mile and get off at the next exit, pulling over on the off ramp (remember this next time you're pulled over, not to pull over on the interstate).

As he's getting out of the car, the Mustang came flying by the off ramp, honking and waving, which the trooper noticed. He calmly walks up to my door, asking for my license and registration. I didn't have my license on me, and he asks me why. To my suprise, the trooper was actually very friendly and let me explain myself. I told him that I play soccer in Coob County on the weekends and left my license with the team captain and forgot to get it back (a true story). He asked me about my tint and I told him that it was 35% (it's really 20), and i have a receipt to prove it (I know people :) ). He said not to worry about it, but asked why I was travelling so fast. I told him about the incident with the Mustang and how I got cut off, and actually pointed out the Mustang (who was still at the light ahead). He took my insurance card and said he'd return.

At this point I'm thinking I'm going to jail, or at the very least getting a nice speeding ticket. However, my K-40 never went off, and he didn't have time to pace me, so maybe I'll get lucky.

Well, I was lucky, as he returned with a ticket for driving without a license. He actually told me to show up in court and they'll throw it out! He said that next time someone wants to race to let them go. I agreed and told him I wasn't trying to race but that the guy in the Mustang pissed me off. He said he understood, but to "do us all a favor and let him go on next time."

I agreed and went on my way, the luckiest person ever.

So, that's my story...I could only imagine what would have happened if he clocked me doing 140 in a 65, reckless driving, etc.

Wow.

Wow Geordie, you really lucked out, he must have spotted you when you were still going under 100 I guess.

Wow, you got insanely lucky on that one.
I know from experience that the Georgia HP doesn't mess around.
I'm really suprised they didn't bag you on the spot.
Nice manners though, It always helps with the cops when you make their job easier and safer for them.

thats almost like the ticket i evaded a couple of weeks ago. Was on my way home from school, SDSU, going I-15 north towards Rancho Bernardo. Slightly past aero drive i am not really paying attention to my speedometer, was doing about 105-110. Traffic was medium especially in the middle to the right lanes, my lane was pretty clear (far left). Anyways as im driving i suddnely froze, my heart skipped a few beats, i saw a CHP motorcycle cop stopped on the side of the road, almsot perpendicular to the freeway on the right side. I thought he was gonna turn his lights on and gun it after me. He started moving, but there was too much traffic between me and him. I atually gunned it and got off the freeway at the next exit, balboa or tierassante? And pulled into the nearest parking lot i could find. I said there shaking for a little bit like 20minutes, then left and went home....

Ass.

I said ghey as in why couldn't the Cobb Co. 5-0 be that nice to me when I was driving w/o a license back in '01? Granted, mine was suspended at the time, but hey, cut a guy a break...

Yeah Geordie, he could have lit you up like the 4th of July. Go buy a lottery ticket, while you're at it.

:D

I hear ya. I actually played blackjack for a free rental at Blockbuster that night and won! Also played a scratch-off lottery ticket that night (very rarely do), just to see, but lost. Oh well. :)

Did you also get lucky when you got to see your gf? :icon23:

You are VERY lucky. That area from 316 to 285 on 85 is pretty much the gauntlet as far as police are concerned. I sometimes wonder if the guys in the mustang are plants to get you to speed.

I wish I was lucky as you. Salesmen at a BMW dealership, drive an M3, get out of speeding tickets scot free.

Lucky bastard,

Nice kill!

Very lucky. I could see a bunch of violations: racing, speeding, careless and imprudent, aggressive driving, etc.

Here they are going for a 1 year suspension for racing on your first offense. DUI is six months.

How were you doing 140mph on 85 South???!!! That highway is constantly congested and full of people that do 55mph in all the lanes. Blame it on Gwinnettians!

Why, cuz he told him to?

I mean, if the cop didn't see the mustang do anything I don't see what he could do.

The worst part is that the Mustang thinks that you probably got tons of tickets for reckless driving, speeding, etc.

Great story, glad you got off the hook.

Yeah, well I walked away from the Mustang easily, then kept going. My guess is the trooper merged onto the highway as I was slowing down, and didn't see me doing 140. Otherwise, I'd be typing this from jail right now. :help

You are extremely lucky. I had a similar incident, but I managed to get off the highway and hide. I was shaking for like 20 minutes.

Good story! Too bad the 'stang didn't get caught.

Funny thing about GA police --it seems they have the nicest manners of any state in which I've had the pleasure of being pulled over. :)

Kinda late finding this post, but why the advice about not pulling over on the freeway? Can someone explain?

Because the emergency lanes are narrow to begin with, and people are passing you at 60+ mph five feet from you.

Why, cuz he told him to?

I mean, if the cop didn't see the mustang do anything I don't see what he could do.

Actually, they can write you a ticket for just about anything under the sun, whether they empirically witness the alleged incident or not.

I had a friend that got into a confrontation with another a-hole driver, and the guy phoned the police which subsequently pulled my friend over and wrote him a ticket for reckless driving (based solely on the other driver's story). Remember, the police officer's job is not to assess guilt/innocence, only to write tickets, etc. That's what the courts are for.

To make a long story short this guy that phoned the cops was a former cop and was in bed with the other cops, magistrates and judges. So my friend got jammed.

Moral: Life isn't always fair, don't think for a second you will always get what you deserve (or get out of what you don't). :devillook

The reason I asked, is b/c one of my friends pulled off at the next exit, after acknowledging the cop, and the cop wrote him a ticket for "attempting to elude" and speeding.
