Ok, wow. Before you read the thread title and think "ok, thats great", listen to this.

My subwoofer setup is dual 1200W 12" sony xplod subs with a 1000W sony xplod amp. so each sub gets 500W.

I hooked it all up and was happy, yay, I have bass now.

Then a few days ago, I got a ride with a friend in his rice mobile, he also has subwoofers, just one, and its like 400W or something. I noticed his sub was WAY more powerful than mine, and even shook his car a little bit.

so I crawled back to my E36 and turned it on. The lame bass came on.
"what could be wrong?" I thought to myself.

After a while of searching and hitting things, I came to the conclusion that my subs must be broken. As I was about to head in, I thought to myself, "check the subwoofer connections..."

so I did, I got in the back seat and folded down the rear seat. I see the back of my subwoofer enclosure and the wires going. I randomly pull on out, and flip the direction of the plugs.

WTF.

Suddenly, the bass is SO much higher quality, and the entire car starts shaking like hell. LOL wtf that freaking speaker connection was reversed the whole time, so THATS why my bass sounded like crap and was so weak?!?! lol..

btw, would that have anything to do with my positive battery cable oxidizing and becoming all rusty??

Sounds like you had the polarity of one of the speakers reversed, which will effectively cancel out much of the bass. As one speaker moves out, the other was moving the opposite direction cancelling out the waves.

Also it makes a difference if your two subs are wired in parallel or in series. Your amp will see a lower load (electrical resistance or impedance) with the subs wired in parallel. With a lower load (say 2 ohms) it will put out more power than it will under a higher ohm load.

One of my biggest surprises ever came when I changed my first sub's wiring from series wiring (8 ohms) to parallel wiring (2 ohms). Without changing anything else, I saw the cone reach its excursion limits for the first time. And the difference in SQ was night and day.

Sub wiring has nothing to do with oxidation on your battery terminals. Oxidation is just the reaction of air with the base metal, like copper, to form copper oxide. This is nothing harmful, you've seen this is you've seen a brown penny. Corrosion, on the other hand, means there is a reaction between leaked acid and exposed metal. Neutralize any leaked acid with baking soda or another alkali, then clean it up before it spreads to your sheet metal or battery tray.

whoa you had your subs at 8 ohm? no wonder they sounded like shiat, they were only getting a fraction of the power you amp could produce. btw paraller and series wiring makes no differance, its the final ohm load that does. try connecting a quad 1 ohm sub all in paraller to any amp and see how many fire department trucks you can gather in one place :D

hhaaaa what would that put u at like a .25 ohm load or something?
