 hahahaha It's funny hearing how little kids and even parents talk about that ice cream. Some laugh, some are suprised, some avoid saying the name and just say, "gimme some of that stuff there".....then i say, "oh, ya this puss is really popular right now, you will enjoy your puss!"
Austin 04-28-2004, 02:03 AM Yah we laughed about it last time we all sat in there. Maybe everyone will stop by around 9pm.
Do you have stainless steel brake lines ? If so which company and where they made for a 318 or another 3 series ?
MattE21 04-28-2004, 02:09 AM Cool! IS this happening at other B&R 31 locations? or just yours.
i think there's one not too far away from me.
snk328is 04-28-2004, 10:39 AM Richie, you need to quit taking up 4 parking spaces!!! ;)
e46driver 04-28-2004, 10:42 AM i'm going to every one i can find and get me some ice cream!

Do you work there?
You do know that the owners of the stores pay for the Icecream, not BR Corporate? So you dishing out an extra amount doesn't help out the owner at all.
Sorry, but I'm not a big fan of the night. The owners are required to participate, but have to pay for everything.
Last year at my wife's store 1750 scoops were given out, and it cost $2500 from for the icecream, and not including the extra labor to pay for. There was a store in NYC that gave out 10,000 scoops which is ~$15k plus labor.
Austin 04-28-2004, 01:17 PM So what time are we meeting up to cause this owner of the store to go broke ?
I say 9pm are you going Nobu and mike ?

Thats just the cost of business. I give out free accomadations to dickheads that abuse our 100% guarantee policy at the hotel. Nothing you can do about it. Richie telling 8-10 of his bmw friends to come have a free scoop isnt going to make a difference, esp considering we were all there last week and bought ice cream. Stop whining.

Sorry about the whining, but I get a little edgy about my family's lively-hood. Considering there are some weeks were the store doesn't Gross $2500, and she is expected to give away $2500 in one night. If you think that's whining, fine, then think that, but I have a right to.
Most of the people that come in for the free scoop night are not regular customers and it's not right what BR Corporate makes the owners do. Anyway, I was refering to the scoop size, not anything else.

I can understand that when its people that come in just for the free ice cream and never come back. We've been meeting up there for a few weeks now and buy ice cream pretty much every time. Its just an excuse for us to meet up thats about all.

I don't know yet, Austin.
I literally live 2 block away, but usually don't show up because my g/f gets home around 8 and by the time we start eating dinner, we're still in the middle of it by the time 8:30/9PM rolls around.
The other reason I don't show up to many "meets" is because nobody is going to be impressed by a car that has fender damage. ;)
If I remember, I'll show up.

tell them the fender damage increase air flow around the car and gives you 10 more horses....jsut like my dented hood :D :D
i don't think i have anything to do today....i'm kinda in a okay mood...maybe i'll show up there. after i rape all the BR in my area. :D :D
Austin 04-28-2004, 03:32 PM Ok see you there at 9pm.

I suppose my fender damage won't be as obvious in the dim lighting of the parking lot at Baskin Robbins.
My g/f loves ice cream so maybe I'll convince her that it would be worth the while to make it out there tonight. She can drive her own car so she can go home if she gets creeped out by you guys. ;)
BimmerPride04 04-28-2004, 04:23 PM Austin: I got the brake lines from bavauto and they are made specifically for e36 3er's w/the exception of the m3(i believe). I dont think it's a worth while mod considering i havent noticed anything different in everyday driving or even autoX.
Mr. Complainer out there: Im doing a favor for the store by getting more people to come! Lots of people buy another scoop just so they can have two. Im doing an advertising favor! If more people hear about it, then there is more potential future business for the store. And about the scoop size, girls scoop ridiculously small and the guys scoop a little extra. True this costs extra but if it makes the customer return it's a good thing!
Nobu: I love taking up all those spots in the parking lot! :redspot While i am working i can look out the window and have a good view of my car!

Actually, you are not doing the store a favor. Do you actually own the store? Do you know the numbers? Did I mention I do own a store?
75% of the people that show up come in once a year, and tonight is that one time. There are groups of people that rent vans to take a trip to the store. There is no potential business in the BR FSN.
If you understood how the money works, you'd understand why I'm so pissed. There was a line forming at 5:30pm to wait for their free scoop.
Plain and Simple, BR corporate breaks even or even makes a profit on FSN, while store owners have to foot the bill. I just talked to my wife about it and she said it will cost her close to $4000 for tonight. I was wrong in my first estimation.
So, do you give away $4000 once a year to perfect strangers with nothing in return? Didn't think so...
Have you fun, enjoy the night, but be respectful of the people that pay for it.
SecretAznSauce 04-28-2004, 06:01 PM So, do you give away $4000 once a year to perfect strangers with nothing in return?
yup every year, they are known as the I R S
hinzm3 04-28-2004, 06:04 PM Seems like you need to sell that BR. Open up a subway or some shit because obviously you arent a happy owner.
SecretAznSauce 04-28-2004, 06:05 PM Dude, I heard those condom stores are doing pretty well
Austin 04-28-2004, 06:09 PM Some people just are not givers only takers. Take away all the greedy people and your left with happy people.
vjlax18 04-28-2004, 06:12 PM Actually Subway is worse to own. I feel almost like it's stealing. I am not joking about the rental vans at the store. They are there right now. I am on stand-by to go buy more spoons, napkins, etc if needed. We love the business, and she had it before we got married, but the idea of throwing away $4k doesn't sit well with me. No owners like it, and you should ask them. But it's in their contracts, so they have to do it.
The owners have to buy their Icecream from BR Corporate, and BR Corp donates money to First Book. While they won't give out the hard figures, it is known that they at least break even. The owners are then required to give away the icecream, spoons, cups, cones, napkins, etc at their own cost. And then pay a franchise fee on top of any thing that is actually sold tonight also.
How would you fee?
SG_M3 04-28-2004, 06:14 PM just for John, the ice cream police, i won't take a free scoop. :D
vjlax18 04-28-2004, 06:18 PM Some people just are not givers only takers. Take away all the greedy people and your left with happy people.
I hope you are not implying we're greedy...
Do you work 7 days a week? 50-60 hours a week, with an occasional 70-80 hour week? She works hard for the money that she doesn't really make. It works out to like $9.50 an hour in the end.
vjlax18 04-28-2004, 06:19 PM just for John, the ice cream police, i won't take a free scoop. :D
Sean, if you are ever in the area, I will personally scoop you one.

That van thing is crazy, I wouldnt like that too much either. SUbway is actually one of the better franchise's at the moment. I was going to buy one in locally but the Regional took my spot for himself. Bastard already has 173 subways but wont give that one up
We were thinking about a BR franchise in the same location, but they dont seem to do as well in TX.
SecretAznSauce 04-28-2004, 06:32 PM yeah man its marble slab here. I dunno
i looked into the Subway thingy in the past, its like 75k buy in
hinzm3 04-28-2004, 06:32 PM THe ultimate franchise is Taco bell, their avg take home profits for the owner is 400k/yr. Good luck getting one tho
Austin 04-28-2004, 06:41 PM I hope you are not implying we're greedy...

I never said "John" or "customers" in that post. ;)
Oh BTW, I have some goggles like your dogs but mine have hologram skulls on the front...think I lost them.
vjlax18 04-28-2004, 06:42 PM TB, McD, BK are all pretty good.
My family looked at Subway a while ago. One thing I didn't like was that take their fee right out of the checkbook at the end of the week. While BR requires you to pay on Thursday night yourself. If you do not have the money, or not enough to cover things until you make more, you can wait to pay it. They don't like that too much, but you can do it. Subway takes it, and doesn't care if you only have $1 leftover.
Off to buy spoons, she ran out.
hinzm3 04-28-2004, 07:13 PM But with a good location you dont have to worry about it. My uncle has a few and he takes out 8-10k/month avg off each one.
dallas 97m3/4 04-28-2004, 08:02 PM Wow all this business talk makes me feel like some free ice cream...so is anyone going to the coppell one tonight?
on a friday 04-28-2004, 08:12 PM I may rock the North Richland Hills one tonight.
QuestMCoupe 04-28-2004, 09:06 PM I can't believe someone is complaining because they own a store and have to dish out $2500-$4000 ONE day out of the year and who knows how much the store makes in a year. Sorry man, you're not getting any sympathy from me...if it was such a big problem for the owners why does BR do it then? I'm not going out and getting any ice cream because I have plenty here at my house but I find it rediculous that someone who actually owns a store is complaining about giving away free ice cream ONCE a year.
vjlax18 04-28-2004, 09:32 PM Because the owners have no say, and it's not explained to them how much it costs, but only that they have to participate.
Have you ever owned your own small business or franchise? Do you really know how much work is involved? Just because someone owns a business doesn't mean they make any money. But I don't think you understand that concept, as most do not.
I could tell you exactly how much the store makes in a year, but that is none of your business. But if you were smart, you'd take the numbers I've already given and do some math. You could see how much it really doesn't make. But after reading your post, it looks like you didn't read through my posts before you posted...
I hope everyone enjoyed their free scoop, and I really hope you donated money to First Book if you did go.
FYI, in the first 2 hours, only 25-30% of the people donated money to the First Book people sitting at the door. They ignore the charity, but get their free icecream.
snk328is 04-28-2004, 09:44 PM If the franchise life is so tough, why continue to operate? Why don't you sell the franchise?
There must be something that is more worthwhile than the money itself to justify the $9.50/hr, 50-60 hours of labor. Perhaps it's the feeling of community that has been created around the ice cream shop. Perhaps it's the face of smiling kids and adults alike on hot sunny days.
If the non-monetary rewards start becoming outweighed by the burdens of money, that's when you want to start looking into selling the franchise and finding a new job.
Why don't you take half of the retail space and turn it into a Dunkin' Donuts? Depending on your location, you might do a lot more business.
snk328is 04-28-2004, 09:46 PM BTW, it's raining here in Coppell/Valley Ranch.
BimmerPride04 04-28-2004, 10:13 PM Just got off working and I have a few comments. It's true a lot of people just come for the free scoop, but lots of people never realized the store was here until tonight. Our store is in a bad location and not visible from the main roads/intersection. We will not give away anywhere close to $4k tonight! Maybe half that b/c the store isnt 'popular'. Also what is this First Book thing? All i know is that we dont have that tonight, and we havent had it the last three BR FSN's ive worked.
One question I have is about your wife working there so many hours per week. Im guessing she mainly does cakes. Why dont you hire a cake decorator and make him/her a manager during the mornings (when im guessing she mainly works). Then your wife can stay home more or possibly get another more high paying job during the day. She can stop by on weekends to get the schedule, check how everything is going etc. This is how the 1st owners i worked for worked the store. Current owners worked the store more often and either had more troubles or didnt have any monetary benefit. The new owners (taking over in a month) live across the street and will be working every day and stopping by everyday. I guess what im saying is have you though about having your wife not work as much to save some stress from your lives? Just a thought.
hinzm3 04-28-2004, 10:16 PM I do understand the franchise life. I'm having to spend 40-50k within these 3 months and there is nothing I can do about it. You just have to make sure that its worth it in the end. I didnt realize BR's didnt do that well. I remember me and my dad looked into AVIS rentacar locations and they pretty much expected you to work 60+ hours a week and it wasnt worth it. Unless you cleaned your own cars and ran a 1 man operation from open to close, the money wasnt there.
I'd find something else for sure.
vjlax18 04-28-2004, 11:07 PM There isn't enough money made to pay for a cake decorator, yet.
First Book is the charity that benefits from FSN. BR Corporate donates books to them. The last couple of years was dependent on how many scoops were given out, but this year we don't know how they are going to calculate the amount of books.
BR's can do great. And in TX I'm sure you guys don't worry too much about cold weather, but here in MD, snow really kills business. The summer months pay for the winters months. All the money she makes is from the summer, and has to budget that money for the rest of the year.
Personal info if you guys really want to know. The store was originally her first fiance's store. It was bought for him by his parents. He died suddenly, and she fought at age 22 to get a business loan to buy the store for herself. Only one bank in the area would give her a loan, and now they love her. My father who is also self-employeed owns a small business accounting firm (I grew up watching small businesses run AND fail), and he became her accountant by way of a mutal friend/client. We crossed paths a couple times, but one day I saw her working at a bar for money while she got the business on level ground. She was a beer tub girl at a local bar, and was dancing on the bar shaking her ass in my face... I followed her home. We got married a year later. Sob story over. Anyone need a tisue? ;)
She enjoys not having a boss, but she is also finishing up grad school at Johns Hopkins, and we have a ring ceremony to go to on Sunday. (I miss an autox :( :) ) So I don't know where she is going from here. She loves the store but want to be a Childrens' Shrink. :dunno One thing I do know is there is not stopping her, so I just get out of her way.
But we can't sell the store ever because we are the perfect owners. She is Lactose Intolerent, and I am a Diabetic. :biglaughb:
hinzm3 04-28-2004, 11:37 PM damn no ice cream for you guys.....
QuestMCoupe 04-29-2004, 12:19 AM John, I'm not trying to be an ass but you cant sit here and preach to us about getting free ice cream once a year and expect us to say ok and not do it. I could care less about getting free ice cream but I just dont see why you decided to come in here and give us this lecture about ice cream when most us dont own a BR, dont care about BR, dont care to know how much a BR makes a year, etc. If BR wants to have a free ice cream day and you dont like it then complain to BR not us.

snk328is 04-29-2004, 09:34 AM John,
Just think of it this way...
All the experience that your wife is getting right now by having run her own business since 22 will be a *huge* assett later in life.
When times get tough money-wise, just think of the potential rewards that will come because of all the valuable lessons you learned running your own franchise.
Good luck with it.
vjlax18 04-29-2004, 09:36 AM Good luck with it.
Thank you.

I didn't go because it was raining and didn't feel like standing around in a wet parking lot. Sounds like Austin went. :)
