View Full Version : Why Z4?

Most of you here who've seen my Z3 forum post know I'm not an E85 fan, but I'm not here to be negative>> What I'd like to know is what influenced your decision to buy a Z4.

Was it the rear suspension? Unique Styling? Better price than Boxster?

Just curious...... :)

Want of a new car vs a used one...? :dunno

1) Actually like the styling...imo its no better worse than the z3, just entirly different. Different is good sometimes.
2) Better interior than a Z3.
3) New instead of used.
4) It's different, @ the time I hadn't seen another z4 on the road in Louisville.
5) Bang for buck is much better than a Boxster, & a s2k wasn't an option @ the time(ie lacked some wanted features ie power/heated seats, sound system & my mother whom paid all the taxes prefers BMW[as do I, I suppose]).
6) Awsome OEM sound system(well the premium Carver system @ least, I've never heard the base system).
7) It was won from the BMWCCA, kinda motivates you to get it over say a Boxster(probally wouldn't have gone over as well.)

Yes, I will say it because this is the Z4 board. I LIKE the styling of the Z4. Mind you I like the styling of the Z3 too. They're both nice looking cars IMO.

The Z4 handles better than the Z3 with that funky rear suspension and looser chassis. I also like the interior of the Z4 better than the Z3.

I looked at and drove the Boxster. I'm not a fan of the Boxster styling, looks too "froglike" to me. Also, in terms of features, capabilities and handling, the real comparison is between the Z4 and the Boxster S, which is way more $$$.

You're right, the 3.0 is much cheaper than the S, an M version would be more comparable I suppose. I agree that the Z4 interior is a nicer place to spend the day, us Z3er's just get parts bin E30 interiors.

The funky rear suspension you're talking about came from one of the most reveared race chassis in the world.... so I don't think it's all bad. Chassis flex- well I can't really argue with that.

Styling wise I like the front end of the Z4's now, it's that Bangle butt I just can't get my head around (it's plain awful). Too bad really because it is a nice car other than that.

Regarding the trailing rear suspension, I know it comes from a classic chassis... But... I know when I test drove a Z3 when they first came out it felt like the back end was always going to lose it going around a tight curve. Whether that was chassis flex or the rear suspension I dunno.

I agree the front end is the Z4's strongest feature. It has that lean, aggressive look but still has the BMW cues. The back end I will agree is the weakest. However, IMO, the back end of the Z3 is also its weakest design feature. On the Z4 it goes one way, a little over the top. On the Z3, it goes the other way, a little too bland and boring. It's just there. I like the flame surfacing on the sides of the Z4. The way the reflections play off them when it's just been shined are very neat. Could have done without that diagonal slash, but to me that's just quibbling.

Primary advantages Vs. the three other cars I considered:

Z4 Vs. Boxster:

1. Less expensive
2. More "modern"
3. Better interior
4. More unique (for now)
5. Lower maintenance costs
6. Felt more "solid" (though not quite as quick)

Z4 vs. Crossfire:

1. Better looking
2. Convertible
3. Not a Chrysler
4. Better gearing
5. Better interior

Z4 vs. Lotus Elise:

1. Available now
2. Expected more reliable
3. Some actual trunk space
4. Less likely to leak
5. Dealer closer
6. Maintenance costs lower

 :nono

I can't believe this... Maybe it's because I'm a butt-man at heart, but that front end looks like a toothless old man. The rear end is not BMW-esque, but nothing is anymore. I like it a lot more... looks wide, aggressive...

I'll stop right there. There's a big vein ready to pop on my forehead...

I do respect the car's performance, no doubt about that.

Hijacked again... but not by Hugo!

BTW- The Z3's rear end is what I like most about the car. Smooth curvacious (sp?) flowing flared rear fenders. It's alos the view most other drivers get to see!

Wow Dave you really do know him well.
I prefer the 97 to 99 butt (and all M roaddies) to the upturned flared look of the 2000 plus butts. Seems more curvacous and flowing.

Lets just suffice to say I don't like the Z4's butt at all.

WHY the Z4??? Why not???

I drove my Uncle's Z3 and loved it, but it is dated now and lacks the refinement of the Z4. Plus, why would I want to buy an outdated and used car when I can buy a new, fresh, eye catching design? Thats just my preference with cars though....
