Well I got a call from BMW N. Scottsdale today and they told me that they are going to drop a new engine into my car. After hearing this my heart nearly dropped through my body. They were so nice about it. I have heard some horror stories about dealerships blaming the driver and not the engine. I am happy to say that is not the way it was with BMW N. Scottsdale. They told me that a rod had slipped and they are going to throw a whole new M engine in there. To me, this is really cool. The old engine had 18K on it and even though they aren't resetting the mileage, I will still have basically a brand new car. At this rate I will have more 4 new engines before my warranty runs out! I guess that you have to smile at things this. I drive my car pretty gently, I am not one to redline it very ofter so it wasn't my driving habits that caused the failure. They even told me this. I guess that I should consider myself lucky because all the other stories I have heard about the engines failing were much more severe than mine. They had to have their cars towed and all that stuff. Luckily, I have a mini Cooper to beat on for another week. I am 6'9", in a Mini Cooper, imagine all the smart-ass comments. Well, I will keep you all updated on what happens. The new engine should be in on Fri. and it should be all set up by Wed. Ahh another breakin period :(

That's awesome man!

Just FYI though, your warranty won't reset. If they dropped in the motor at essentially 20,000 miles, you have 30k miles left until you hit the 50k mile warranty mark.

It would be awesome if your warranty actually reset itself, but we don't get that lucky.

Best regards,

Chris

Luckily I have the 6 year 100,000K. I just got in on the warranty extension so I have another 82 left on my engine warranty :D

I'm not too surprised. BMW would much rather just replace the whole motor than to try and fix the problem and have the chance of the motor going out again in the future. Glad to hear everythings getting sorted out though!

I am sure that BMW wants to take that motor and do a little R&D on it to see what caused it to fail. I drive my car pretty carefully. I am almost too paranoid about it, so for mine to go out it definitely needed to be a defect! But now that I know how easily they will replace my motor, I am going to rail the hell out of the new motor! That is of course after my breakin period! :(

Cost effective? Remember, even an S50 is worth more than your whole car. ;)

I just dont see the logic behind it. And unless you get it insured...what happens if you get in a wreck? You bend over and take it with no lube. You spend a few grand on the engine, maybe another for a tranny? Then I'm almost positive you'll have to do heavy modification to even fit that thing in there...relocating things around in the bay, just so you can get it to fit. Is it really worth it? Or should you just start with a more practical platform?

Yeah, like an E30 or an E36.
