Just got back from the club race at VIR...what an absolute blast...like a different world from DE's altogether...we should have pics up on DTM shortly and I also have the entire Enduro on video...

For my first race it was an awesome weekend and I am pretty happy with it. I am looking forward to Mid-Ohio next month.

Despite the shattered windshield incident on Friday (went out on track for my 3rd practice of the day and the hoodpins were not fastened and the hood slammed into the windshield shattereing it) and the diff problems on Sunday (broken wheel speed sensor caused the engine to stop pulling at 6K RPMs) causing DNS's in both Friday and Sunday's sprint races...I feel really good about the weekend because of Saturday's hour long Enduro race....I think it was a fantastic experience and really fun...and I drove really well for a rookie in his first club race. As for the Saturday enduro...it was my 1st start ever since I didn't start on Friday. I qualified the car with like a 2.13 lap time which put us in 11th at the grid (I was a bit disapointed because I know I can do better if I had a clean lap without slower traffic and infact was pulling better times in the 2:11 range earlier in practice, but I spoke with some veteran racers (i.e. Andy Watts, Steve Bassen, Scott Montana and Simon Hunter etc...) and they assured me that it was a long race and 11th was pretty good and if I focused on clean and consistant driving that would be the key. At the start IP front runners Damion and Mike Gilbert got a jump on me coming outta T1 as I hesitated on a hole after Rushin put 2 off in T1...but I would get by them in the first few laps that followed. I managed to go from 11th to 5th in the standing between my start and my pit. Simon took over and did a great job with the car going through the field and putting us into 3rd overall at the drop of the checkered flag!...Steve Bassen and Scott Montana finished ahead of us in overall 1st and 2nd and we got a 3rd overall and 2nd in class....this was an excellent result because like 70+ cars started the race (I think like 50 or so finished...) and we scored a top 3 overall finish from a prepared class car with a rookie driver and a co-driver who was not in his own car!!!

I was really happy with the way things went and feel as though for my first race it was pretty satisfying ....Simon pulled a fast 2.09 in the car and we both consistantly drove in the 2:10 - 2:12 laptime range over the course of the race. We reviewed the film afterwards and I found a couple of places I could make up some time and a few passes I could have made earlier...I was getting much more comfortable with 2 to 3 wide in corners as the race went on and the start was crazy...like nothing else I've ever felt on a track !!

My observations through the weekend were that the BMW CR scene is a pretty good bunch of folks. Everyone is very friendly and willing to help you out with advice (for a rookie like me) or if someone needs a part or tool or something. I also felt intimidated by some Modified class cars but came to find that most of them were not too scary or fast as I initially thought....you just need to know who is who out there it seems. Ironically at a DE it seems like although pople are not competing they can be pricks or more cocky than I saw at the race which was a competition environment. I don't think I'll really get anything really outta a DE anymore (with the exception of enjoying instructing and getting some seat time at a unfamiliar track or something) since racing is so much more fun and exciting in like every way...no point by's, no waiting...just pure balls out driving!! I believe the results will be in the Roundel in a couple of months with an article covering the race and hopefully some good pics...the race weather was like near perfect with some hotter than expected track surface temps ...and it got really hot in the car really quickly!

I'm looking forward to Mid Ohio and doing probably 5 or so races this year with continued instructing at some scattered DE's from time to time....

Congrats Sunir!! :alright

Having had the privilege of riding with you on the track, I must tell you that your outstanding results do not at all surprise me. You da man. :buttrock

How do you and your co-pilot feel about the LTW? Seems like once the bugs were sorted, it was more than up to the task, no?

The LTW felt really good...I know it is good for sub 2:09 laptimes at VIR because Simon ran a best of 2:09 in the race on our 20th lap on hot tires ...he an I were consistanly lapping in the low 2-teens like 2:10 to 2:12 and we both feel like there are 2:07's possible with the car....I think it should be in the 1:21 or so times at Summit now with the new diff. Both of those laptimes are good enough to win in class as well as top 5 overall finishes beating out most of the guys in CMod and DMod as well with the exception of like the fastest 2 Modified class guys at the event overall.

hopefully we'll get a link posted here soon and some of the race footage online...

Thanks Andy man... but believe me tracking at a DE is nothing like racing man....like the adrenaline at the start of a race is unreal...then imagine that you are going FLAT OUT every lap and if someones in your way you simply take 'em...no waiting, no point by's, no you and me and this and that...late braking passes galore, strategy, timing, alertness, and a little bit of good luck every now and then...and you have to fight for position or defend your place...man W2W racing is just a totally different animal altogether!

I can only imagine!! I am sure it is fatiguing and exciting the whole race. The constant analysis of your position, how you are going to pass, and how you need to maintain your position is on your mind the WHOLE time you are out there.

I don't think I will ever get to that point but I love doing DEs. DE's are a great way to learn car control and increase confidence. These are two things that I am hoping to build upon each DE I do. I am trying to replace my current instincts with form and control. That task in itself is VERY difficult!!

Post pics when you get them.

How aggressive are the club guys? Do they shut the door on you or do they "let" you by if you are clearly faster, or what?

You mentioned a lot of cars not finishing. Were people swapping paint or just braking down, or what?

I am very excited for you Sunir. I recall meeting you a short while ago when you did not even OWN an M3, let alone race one. Its been fun watching you and the car transform at a such a rapid pace.

Accordingly, I expect to see you shooting the bird to Pablo Montoya as you fly by him next year. :321

Sound great Sunir!

Sorry to hear about your mishap with your hood. Did you get a replacement or just bang that back into shape to use? What did you do for the windshield?

Fantastic showing for your inaugural rookie race!

thanks for the kind words fellas...yeah man we beat the hood back into shape with a hammer and it is on there all right...actually looks kinda intimidating :evil2 :devillook ...but I want to start the Mid-Ohio race with a non damaged hood that we've already sourced and I'll have painted to match the paint scheme were working on for the car...

There was a lot of attrition at the race...people did go off, we had a couple of poeple total their cars and I think at least one or 2 rolls...it was a HUGE field like imagine 70 + cars on one track...I qualified in the in the front of the pack which is KEY in a big field because the attrition in T1 will most likely happen at the middle and back of the field...if the front pack dives in, we may risk a re-start. I think at one point of the race I remmember seeing like 5-6 cars off all around the track but most of them were not too bad I don't think...then of course you have problems like mine with stupid sh*t like not checking hoodpins or small things that nobody has a spare part for like a shattered wheel speed sensor!!! But yeah sometimes they see you coming and remember you from practice or another session and the slow guys will let you by and sometimes they'll block 'ya but you pass 'em anyways...the only time it really sucks is when you fighting with someone in your class and litterally chasing them down closing the gap as the lap goes on or going for an overall podium finish and someone slower blocks you so at the end they build up momentum over several passed cars...

What an awesome way to debut your road racing!

Hopefully in a couple years or so I'll be able to road race too.
