Well many of you guys may know already that I also own a 86 635csi Well the total between me and my dad are the following: 79 320i; 85 325e; 88 325is; 86 635csi; 87 635csi; 90 735il; 90 750il(V12)

So it begins this year my dad and I started collecting parts for the e24 and do a ///M6 conversion to it according to US specs mainly because its way to much $$$ to get the euro bumpers and the complete euro S38. So far the car has the following mod list: It has a complete rebuild by my dad with all the goodies such as knifed and nitrate treated crank, +1mm overbore with JE forged pistons, blueprinted motor with custom cam and custom burned chip from Bavaria Auto Centre, CAI and REMUS exhaust. Complete urethane bushings through out and Bilstien Coil-overs, front/rear anti-roll bars, front/rear stress bars, and many many more. We have bought all brand new ///M6 body Kit parts, and have obtained a complete bottom end of an S38. We need to find the top end but are looking at a $4000 range on this one. Anyways dont wanna go into to much detail since this IS an e21 forum, but we started the tear-down process and have just finished installing the shaved door handle kit, here are some pics before she goes into the body shop for a full restore....enjoy :buttrock

Were you going to swap in a 5spd?

Were you going to swap in a 5spd?

Yeah. It just wouldn't be an M6 with an auto.

Of course, if you see the last picture you can see the other shark next to it, that will be the donor for all the parts, we still need to find a dogleg gearbox, if not we will just use the stock 5-speed.

I have a question regarding the back seat in the E24 and E21. I see you have both, so can you tell me if the back seat in the E24 measures out and could possibly fit in the E21. I found that a lot of the older 5 series measurements are close, if not the same, as the E21, so I started thinking maybe the E24 back seat just might fit with little or no alterations.
Thanks

If you are doing a US spec project, then the dog leg tranny isn't what you want. The dog leg trannies were never used here AFAIK. M3 people are always lusting after them too. Only dog leg cars I know of that we got in the US were older Porsche cars. .....Just a thought.....

Can someone define a dogleg gearbox? I was under the impression all the gears were just inverted (1st is in 2nd's spot, 3rd is in 4th's, etc.), is there any advantage to a dogleg?

Dog leg (dogleg...wahtever) has 1st below R, making 2-5 in a standard H pattern. This is instead of what MOST 5 speeds are, which is a H+1 pattern, where 5th is the +1. It makes it so that the gears that you use most on the track (2-5) are more readily available. With R and 1st being off to the left of the natural neutral position (dead middle of travel), you basically take them out of the loop. 2nd and 3rd are the most readily available, being a quick up or down from dead center, and 4th and 5th aren't THAT hard to get into. None of that jamming down and as close to you as possible when downshifting into 2nd for a corner while trying to heel-and-toe the revs up to where they should be AND brake for the corner. You just pull the shifter out of a gear and ease it straight up. Less things overall to think about.....IF you've been driving with that type of a gearbox for a while.....

Does the SRT4 have a 6spd? I can't remember? THAT would screw things up pretty good.....4 columns of gears!!!!

The only US spec piece on the car will be the gauges and the bumpers we will do the S38 to euro spec eventually
