View Full Version : Is this the week for BF.c members to get into accidents?
Experimental M3 04-16-2004, 12:40 AM Yesterday evening the girlfiend and I were on the way to class when we had an incident on the road. We were at a stop light waiting to turn left (it was a double left turn lane, and we were on the right side). Light went green, we get through the turn and the driver next to us promptly begins to take over our lane. Nellie lays in on the horn and the brakes, but that didn't work. So as a last effort to avoid a collision, she drifted towards the curb and ran into it. Then the other driver decides to keep on going like nothing happened. We ran the driver down about a quarter of a mile away with the car steering really badly to one side. I took down all of her information and she has agreed to pay for all the damages to our vehicle (just as long as we don't contact her insurance company she said).
Now the issue we are having is where to take the car. It's a Honda, not a BMW. Luckily there isn't any body damage, but the wheel is scuffed pretty bad and I'm pretty certain there's suspension damage under the car. After getting done talking to the driver, Nellie turned the steering wheel all the way to lock on one side and something in the suspension popped. Any suggestions? Thanks for your help in advance.
Brian
P.S. I have to compliment my girl. She did a great job avoiding the other car. I couldn't have done any better myself. Her actions kept anyone from getting hurt.
BimmerDawg 04-16-2004, 08:41 AM Man, that sucks. Sorry to hear it. I'd be careful in not reporting it to the insurance company. That's a good way to get burned.
Experimental M3 04-16-2004, 11:09 AM The lady seems really concerned that we will report it to her insurance, so I think we will be using that as bait. The main thing is that no one got hurt. Cars are replaceable, people are not.
Sparc_it 04-16-2004, 01:32 PM Insurance.....you gotta pay to play. Read Kevin's post about diminished car value. Its always good to be kind to other people....but if it has to do with the suspension. Insurance all the way.
If she is so concerned...that means she has a previous record of wrecks, tickets, etc... If that is the case, people like that shouldn't be on the road. They are a danger to everyone around them.
Call Insurance today.

You should of called the cops and got a report as well. Who cares if u call her insurance company. She can always lie. What proof do you have? Her word? Yea right. She can lie to avoid it. They will believe her over you. The insurance company has to have her call it in first if she was at fault if she was gonna go that route. You calling in first wont do anything. You should of called the cops once u stopped her. Its not worth being "nice" these days when in the end you can get screwed.
fortysix 04-16-2004, 02:55 PM Agreed. The lady screwed up and now it's time for her to pay for the consequences. If that means insurance rates or having her license suspended, tough luck.

I couldn't agree with you more. Some lady hit me in my GTI and convinced me to not call insurance (I was also in a hurry). She was nice and polite, driving a late 90's cherokee. She seemed to be upstanding and gave me all her information (She even had her kid with her), plate, license, address, tel #, etc. After repeated failed attempts to contact her I called the police. They said we both had to go back to the scene for a report. I had the police run the license# while I was on the phone. Come to find out she didn't have any insurance. My insurance wouldn't cover it w/o a report and I got stuck with $1500 in body damage.
To make a long story short......always call the police and get a report. Always use the insurance. Nice or not its the only way to be sure you don't get the shaft. Unless of course its cash on the spot.
WEB150 04-16-2004, 03:10 PM Friend of mine got hit and didn't get a police report. Long story short...the guy never gave him a dime. No way to collect if you do not have proof. I don't care if the person who hit you is a priest, ALWAYS get a police report.
Experimental M3 04-16-2004, 03:28 PM I wanted to call the police so bad, you have no idea. There's only one snafu. The lady never made contact with our vehicle. If we had called the police, the officer would have wrote a ticket to Nellie for failure to maintain lane because she hit the curb, and the insurance claim would have had to go on her insurance. Then we get to deal with an insurance hike, the ticket fee, and the insurance deductable. Not a pretty picture.
Now the good news is that the other driver is with the same insurance provider as I am, and I'm good friends with my insurance man. I can always make a call to my buddy for some help. :evil2
Thanks for the advice everyone. This is the kinda stuff that goes to show how much we support each other. I really appreciate it.

99% of the time, it's the one in the right lane coming into the left one.
I keep trying to let someone hit me as I "hug" the line in the left lane......
BTW: How much you asking for the 5.9?
Just curious... what BMW's have you smoked with it :alright
Experimental M3 04-20-2004, 06:22 PM Yeah, I know what you mean about the drivers who like to cut into the inside lane. Through Cobb Co.'s wonderful road design, I've had that happen to me on a number of occasions.
I'm asking $13K for the Jeep, but I'm willing to negotiate. Let me know if you're interested. I haven't actually raced any BMW's with it, but with a best 0-60 time of 6.23 seconds, I figure it would give a few of them a run for their money and a few of them would smoke me. You pretty much can't beat the launch though. All wheel drive and 350+ ft-lbs. of torque! It feels good! :D
